Network infrastructure is the hardware and software that lets devices, users, applications, and networks communicate. It can include cables, switches, routers, wireless access points, and management software; the exact combination depends on the network’s size and purpose.

What network infrastructure means

Network infrastructure is the collection of physical equipment and software that provides network connectivity and communication. It links end-user devices with one another, applications, the internet, and other networks. NIST defines a network as a system of interconnected components, with examples including routers and cabling (NIST glossary).

It is not one device or a fixed list of products. A small home network may combine several functions in one router, while an organization may use separate equipment and software across offices, campuses, data centers, and cloud environments.

What equipment and software does it include?

Interfaces and cabling

A device’s network interface connects it to the network. For a wired connection, Ethernet cabling carries traffic between that interface and a port on a switch or router. Cable type, installation, and link capacity are part of the practical design, not just the devices at either end.

Switches

Switches connect devices within a local network and handle traffic among connected devices or groups. They provide the wired foundation for many networks, including those where users primarily connect over Wi-Fi.

Routers

Routers connect separate networks and direct traffic between them—for example, from a home or office network toward the internet, or between an organization’s sites. The distinction is functional: switches connect devices within a local network, while routers move traffic between networks (Cisco’s networking overview). In a small setup, a single wireless router may also provide Wi-Fi access.

Wireless access points

An access point allows wireless devices to join a network over radio. In many deployments, the access point connects onward through Ethernet cabling to a switch. Wi-Fi therefore changes how a device reaches the network; it does not necessarily replace the wired infrastructure behind the access point.

Management and security components

Software can configure, monitor, or coordinate network equipment. Enterprise wireless networks may use controllers to manage access points. Depending on the design, networks may also include firewalls, load balancers, and other platforms that help control or distribute traffic. These capabilities are part of a broader architecture rather than an automatic property of any single device.

Data-center facilities and virtualization

A data-center network can include cabling, racks, switches, routers, firewalls, and load balancers, as well as the power and cooling infrastructure that supports the equipment. Virtualization can divide physical resources into logical networks. Data-center designs also account for internal traffic, segmentation, scale, and redundant paths (Cisco’s data-center networking overview).

How network infrastructure works together

  1. A device joins the network. Its network interface sends and receives traffic over Ethernet or, for wireless access, by radio.
  2. Traffic reaches local network equipment. A wired device connects to a switch or router. A wireless device first communicates with an access point, which commonly forwards traffic over a wired connection.
  3. Traffic moves to its destination. Switches handle local connections; routers move traffic between networks and toward other sites or external services.
  4. Management software coordinates equipment. Depending on the network, controllers and other tools may configure devices and help administrators manage connectivity and policies.

Network infrastructure can also establish security boundaries. Routing platforms may apply traffic policies, and segmentation can keep parts of a network logically separate. Those are design capabilities; installing a particular device alone does not make a network secure.

Common types and deployment forms

“Types” describes several overlapping choices, not a single set of mutually exclusive categories. A network may be wired and wireless, span local and wide-area links, and combine on-premises and cloud resources at the same time.

Design dimension What it describes
Local and wide-area connectivity A local network connects devices in a nearby environment. Routers and other platforms link separate sites or networks to one another and to external services.
Wired and wireless access Wired devices use cabling to reach network equipment. Wireless devices use radio to connect to access points, which commonly rely on wired connections for onward traffic.
On-premises and cloud-supported Equipment may be deployed and managed on-site, while cloud infrastructure combines physical resources with software abstraction. A hybrid design can use both.
Enterprise and data-center networks Organizations may connect offices, campuses, colocation facilities, cloud services, servers, and storage. Data-center designs add requirements around traffic patterns, segmentation, scale, and redundant paths.

NIST’s cloud-infrastructure glossary entry, citing SP 800-145, describes cloud infrastructure in terms of physical resources and an abstraction layer (NIST glossary). That distinction helps explain why cloud-supported infrastructure can still depend on physical networking equipment.

How to choose infrastructure for a home, office, or larger network

Start with the job the network must do. A home, a small office, a campus, and a data center have different coverage, capacity, management, and resilience needs, so there is no universally best layout.

  • Coverage and scale: Count the devices, locations, and areas that need connectivity. A design for one room is different from one that must link multiple sites.
  • Access method: Decide which devices need wired connections and where Wi-Fi is needed. Include the wired links serving access points in the plan.
  • Capacity and performance: Consider expected traffic from users and applications, along with the links connecting access points, switches, and data-center equipment.
  • Management and security: Determine whether local or cloud-based management, centralized control, access policies, or network segmentation fit the environment.
  • Resilience and growth: Consider whether critical links or equipment need redundancy and whether the design can expand as device counts or locations change.
  • Cost and operating effort: Account for equipment, cabling, installation, administration, and any cloud or managed-service costs. Costs vary by deployment; the cited definitions and technical overviews do not establish a universal cost comparison.

Why the design matters

Network infrastructure determines how devices connect, how traffic travels, and where administrators can apply controls. A clear design can help match connectivity to the needs of users and applications, while leaving room for security policies, segmentation, and growth. The right components depend on the actual environment—not simply on whether a product is labeled a router, switch, or access point.
