How to Make Your Wi-Fi Faster for Free: A Step-by-Step Guide

Start with a repeatable speed test, then try a router reboot, better placement, a suitable Wi-Fi band, and interference checks before blaming your ISP or replacing equipment.

You can often improve slow Wi-Fi without buying anything: measure it first, restart the router, adjust its position, choose the right Wi-Fi band, and check for interference or heavy network use. A speed test over Wi-Fi measures several things at once—the device, wireless connection, router, and broadband service—so a low result alone does not reveal the cause.

Measure the slowdown before changing anything

Run a speed test and note the result, then repeat it later under similar conditions. Speeds can vary over time, so one test is not a reliable diagnosis. If possible, test close to the router and compare results on another device. The Federal Communications Commission’s broadband speed guide explains how to check connection speed; Ofcom also recommends repeat testing when diagnosing a slow or unreliable connection.

Testing near the router helps distinguish a weak or obstructed Wi-Fi link from a broader service problem. If you already have a wired connection available, comparing a wired test with Wi-Fi can provide another useful clue. A slow Wi-Fi result by itself does not prove that the broadband service is faulty.

Restart the router

A reboot is a quick, free first step. The FCC consumer guide says, “Sometimes a simple router reboot—by powering it off and then back on again—can resolve a problem.” Ofcom suggests switching the router off for about 30 seconds before turning it back on. Follow the instructions for your router, wait for it to reconnect, and then repeat the speed test under comparable conditions.

Move the router to a better position

Place the router in an open, central location, with fewer walls and other obstacles between it and the devices that need Wi-Fi. A router tucked away behind furniture or inside a cabinet may have a harder time reaching devices around the home. Microsoft and Google both identify layout and physical obstacles as factors that can affect wireless performance.

After moving it, test again from the same device and location as before. The best placement depends on the home’s layout, so use the results rather than assuming a particular spot will improve every room.

Choose the Wi-Fi band that suits the device’s location

If your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try each on the device you are troubleshooting. Neither is always the better choice:

Band Often suits Trade-off
2.4 GHz Devices farther from the router or separated by obstacles, where broader coverage matters Generally covers more area, but may not offer the same potential data rates as 5 GHz
5 GHz Devices near the router when faster data transfer matters Can provide faster data rates, but distance and obstacles limit it more

These are general tendencies, not guarantees: performance also depends on the router, the device, and the surroundings. The FCC describes the differences between the bands in its broadband speed guide; Google’s Wi-Fi guidance also discusses band choice and obstacles.

Check for congestion and wireless interference

Several active devices using the connection at once can affect performance, particularly when they are doing demanding tasks. For a clearer test, pause downloads, streaming, or other heavy network use that is not needed. Then test again. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance recommends considering both network usage and congestion.

Nearby wireless networks and other wireless devices can also interfere. If your router allows channel selection, use its instructions to try automatic channel selection or another available channel, then retest. Apple’s guidance explains that interference and channel selection can affect Wi-Fi performance. A channel change is not guaranteed to help; the result depends on local conditions and the router’s controls.

  • One device is slow, but others are not: The issue may be specific to that device or its Wi-Fi connection. Compare it near the router and, if available, on the other band.
  • Devices are slow only farther away: Distance, walls, or other obstacles may be weakening the wireless link. Placement or band choice may help.
  • Several devices are slow even near the router: Contact your internet service provider (ISP) and ask it to check for service issues. If you have a wired connection available, compare that result with Wi-Fi.
  • The broadband service appears healthy but Wi-Fi remains poor: Check whether the router can provide the speed included in your subscribed plan, and whether the affected device supports the band you are trying. The FCC recommends checking router capability before considering replacement.

Keep the speed-test results and note where, when, and on which devices you tested. That evidence makes it easier to explain the problem to your ISP or identify whether it is limited to one part of the home.

Keep router software current, but do not treat updates as a speed guarantee

Router software can include important security fixes. The Federal Trade Commission advises consumers to keep router software current and check with their ISP about how updates are handled. Follow the router maker’s or ISP’s instructions; an update is good maintenance, but it is not a guaranteed way to make Wi-Fi faster.
