Netgear’s Orbi 970 costs a premium because it combines quad-band WiFi 7, a high-capacity wireless backhaul, multi-gigabit Ethernet, and a three-unit whole-home mesh kit. Those features can help in large, busy homes with fast internet and capable devices; they do not automatically make sense for every household. NETGEAR listed the RBE973S three-pack at $1,799.99 on its U.S. product page when accessed in 2026, but prices and configurations can change.
What are you paying extra for?
Quad-band WiFi 7 and a high-capacity backhaul
The Orbi 970 is a quad-band WiFi 7 system. NETGEAR describes a dedicated 5 GHz radio for traffic between the router and satellites, with 6 GHz capacity used through WiFi 7 Multi-Link Operation (MLO). NETGEAR advertises wireless backhaul of up to 10 Gbps. In a wireless mesh, reserving radio capacity for node-to-node traffic can reduce competition with client traffic, but the advertised ceiling is not a guarantee of speed in a particular home. NETGEAR’s Orbi 970 product page describes the system’s bands and capabilities.

Large aggregate capacity—not one device’s speed
NETGEAR rates the 970 at up to 27 Gbps across its bands and up to 200 connected devices. These are manufacturer specifications, not an expected internet speed for one phone, computer, or connection. Actual performance depends on factors including the broadband plan, client hardware, distance, interference, and building layout.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMulti-gigabit Ethernet ports
The router has a 10Gb internet port, a 10Gb LAN port, and four 2.5Gb LAN ports. Satellite units also provide multi-gigabit ports and can support wired backhaul. Those connections can benefit households with multi-gigabit broadband, wired workstations or storage, or Ethernet cabling between mesh nodes. A multi-gigabit switch may be useful if you need more fast LAN ports, and Ethernet can enable wired backhaul; neither is required to use the mesh wirelessly.

A router plus two satellites
The RBE973S three-pack contains one router and two satellites. NETGEAR advertises coverage up to 10,000 square feet for that pack, but walls, construction, interference, and node placement affect real coverage. A smaller home may not need three units or the flagship hardware. NETGEAR’s U.S. product listing gives the pack configuration and coverage claim.
A limited security-service bundle
NETGEAR’s product materials include an initial one-year Armor subscription. Its technical documentation says a paid subscription is required after the included trial, so this is not lifetime security service. Check current renewal terms before assigning a cost to the ongoing service. NETGEAR Armor information and the product’s technical documentation describe the subscription.

How does the 970 compare with less expensive Orbi tiers?
Orbi is a product family, not a single price point. NETGEAR’s listed U.S. price for an Orbi 870 WiFi 7 three-pack was $1,299.99 when accessed in 2026. The family is rated for up to 21 Gbps and up to 150 devices, with tri-band radios and 2.5Gb wired ports. By contrast, the 970 is rated for up to 27 Gbps and up to 200 devices, and adds quad-band backhaul and 10Gb connectivity. These are vendor-rated specifications and live listed prices; both can vary by configuration and date.

NETGEAR also positions its Orbi 770 as a lower-cost WiFi 7 option, with tri-band radios and a rated capacity up to 11 Gbps. Its comparison page includes historical MSRP and coverage figures, so those figures should not be treated as current live pricing. The key point is that WiFi 7 mesh does not require buying the flagship 970. See NETGEAR’s Orbi product-family information for current model details and listings.

When can the Orbi 970’s premium be worthwhile?
- Large home: A multi-node system may be useful when one router cannot provide reliable coverage throughout the space. The advertised coverage figure is a manufacturer claim, not a promise for every floor plan.
- Fast broadband: A multi-gig internet plan can make the 970’s 10Gb WAN port more relevant than it would be on a slower connection.
- Many demanding connections: Multiple active devices, high-throughput workstations, or local storage can make its capacity and wired ports more useful. Device count alone does not guarantee better results.
- Wireless satellite links or wired multi-gig needs: The dedicated backhaul and multi-gig ports target homes where those capabilities address a real bottleneck.
If your broadband is far slower than the system’s port capacity, your home is modest in size, or a less expensive mesh already covers it well, much of the 970’s extra capability may go unused. Compare the band and backhaul design, port speeds and counts, pack size, client compatibility, and any recurring service costs—not just the aggregate WiFi number.
Does the high price mean it is the fastest or best-value mesh?
No. WIRED’s June 4, 2024 review characterized the system as capable but expensive and reported that the Eero Max 7 and TP-Link Deco BE85 slightly outperformed it in some of WIRED’s tests. That finding applies to the review’s test conditions and date; it does not establish a universal ranking. It does show why a high price should be judged against the features and results a particular household needs, rather than treated as proof that a system is always the performance winner. WIRED’s Orbi 970 review provides its test context.

What the price does—and does not—tell you
The $1,799.99 listed price buys a particular bundle of premium radios, backhaul capacity, Ethernet hardware, and three mesh units, plus a limited Armor subscription term. NETGEAR has not published a verified breakdown of manufacturing cost, profit margin, or how much of the retail price is attributable to each component. The price can therefore be explained by the system’s feature set, but not by a precise component-by-component cost calculation.
