These checks can help isolate the cause without reinstalling extensions.
Start by checking whether IntelliSense works manually
VS Code calls its rich code-completion feature IntelliSense. It is built in for JavaScript, TypeScript, JSON, HTML, CSS, SCSS, and Less; other languages may depend on a language extension. The exact service and fix therefore depend on the language in the file you are editing. See Microsoft’s IntelliSense documentation.

In a Windows or Linux editor, press Ctrl+Space to request suggestions. On macOS, the documentation shows ⌃+Space. IntelliSense can also appear after a language trigger character, such as a period in JavaScript.

- Manual suggestions appear, but automatic popups do not: check automatic suggestion and trigger-character settings.

- Suggestions appear but omit library members: check language-specific metadata, such as JavaScript type declarations.
Check automatic suggestion settings
VS Code settings can be defined at user, workspace, or language-specific scope. Workspace settings apply to the current project and can override user settings, so a setting that works in one project may differ in another. The User and workspace settings documentation explains these scopes.

- Open VS Code Settings and search for
@modified. This filter helps reveal settings whose values differ from defaults or have been explicitly configured. - Search for
editor.quickSuggestionsandeditor.suggestOnTriggerCharacters. Review their effective values for the active file and relevant scope. - Check whether a workspace or language-specific setting, or a setting contributed by the language extension, is affecting suggestions. The IntelliSense documentation links the relevant suggestion settings.
- If you identify a setting that is clearly responsible, reset or adjust that setting alone. Avoid clearing all settings, which can remove unrelated customizations.
Restart VS Code once
Microsoft notes that when IntelliSense stops working, the language service may not be running, and recommends restarting VS Code as a troubleshooting step. Save your work, restart the editor, then try suggestions again. A restart is a low-cost check, not a guaranteed fix; if the problem remains, continue with the language-specific checks below. Check whether the workspace is in Restricted Mode
Look for a Restricted Mode indicator or Workspace Trust banner. In Restricted Mode, extensions that do not support Workspace Trust may be disabled, and some language features can be limited. If you recognize and trust the project’s authors and contents, use the Workspace Trust interface to trust that workspace. Do not trust an unfamiliar project simply to restore autocomplete. Check the language extension and language-specific requirements
Confirm the extension supports the feature
Some language extensions do not provide every IntelliSense feature. Read the extension’s README and support notes rather than assuming a general VS Code setting applies. On an extension’s Marketplace Details page, use its Support link to find the relevant issue repository. Microsoft’s IntelliSense troubleshooting guidance recommends consulting the language extension when suggestions remain incomplete.

If you suspect an extension conflict, you can temporarily disable extensions from the Extensions view as a diagnostic isolation step, then re-enable them. This can help narrow down a conflict; it is not a universal fix. See Microsoft’s extension documentation.
For JavaScript, check missing type declarations
If JavaScript suggestions appear but omit methods or variables from a library, the corresponding type declaration files may be missing. Microsoft recommends installing the relevant npm or yarn package when applicable. This diagnosis is specific to JavaScript typings; do not assume it explains missing completions in other languages. Consider whether the project is unusually large
VS Code may partially disable IntelliSense for performance in very large workspaces. Microsoft suggests excluding large folders, such as node_modules or build output, with files.exclude or search.exclude. Treat this as a targeted possibility, not a setting to apply indiscriminately: exclude only generated or irrelevant folders that make sense for your project. Escalate with details that narrow the problem
If the checks above do not restore the expected feature, consult the language extension’s current README and support repository. Include the language and file type, extension name and version, whether Ctrl+Space produces suggestions, and whether the workspace is trusted. The extension’s Marketplace Details page provides a Support link; Microsoft also points users to the language extension’s repository for unresolved IntelliSense issues.
