The Galaxy S23 Ultra is the clearer pick if you want a built-in S Pen and dedicated 3x and 10x optical telephoto cameras. The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a slightly larger listed display and offers storage up to 2TB, versus 1TB in Samsung’s cited S23 Ultra specifications. They launched in different years, so the better buy depends on your priorities and the current price for the same storage and condition in your market.

Which phone is better for your needs?
Choose the Galaxy S23 Ultra for the S Pen and dedicated zoom cameras
The S Pen is integrated into the S23 Ultra, making the phone a more direct fit for handwriting, marking up documents, and other stylus-based tasks. Samsung also specifies separate 3x and 10x optical telephoto cameras. Its announcement describes zoom beyond 10x as digital zoom with AI Super Resolution, so that extended reach should not be confused with another optical camera.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

#1 Best Overall
- 6.8" Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate, up to ~1750 nits brightness, HDR10+ support, and ultra-smooth responsiveness for gaming and scrolling.
Choose the iPhone 17 Pro Max for a larger listed display or 2TB storage
Apple lists a 6.9-inch display, 0.1 inch larger diagonally than Samsung’s 6.8-inch panel, and a 2TB configuration not listed in Samsung’s cited S23 Ultra launch specifications. Both are large, high-refresh-rate phones, with listed refresh rates reaching 120Hz.
That small diagonal difference does not by itself establish which screen looks better. Likewise, a higher storage ceiling matters chiefly if you expect to use more than 1TB locally; compare the price of the capacity you actually need.

Let your platform preference settle the close calls
These phones belong to different ecosystems. Compatibility with the devices, services, and workflows you already use can matter more in daily life than a narrow specification difference. Neither platform is an objective winner for every buyer.

No reliable current price difference is established here. The models launched in different years, and an older model’s present-day value may depend on local stock, discounts, condition, and seller. Launch prices are not a substitute for current offers.

- Choose the same country and currency for both listings.
- Match storage capacity where possible; if the capacities differ, account for how much storage you need rather than treating unlike configurations as equal.
- Compare like condition with like condition: new, refurbished, or used. Check the seller and regional model as well.
- For carrier offers, account for the plan and any conditions instead of comparing only the advertised device payment.
- Check stock and the listing date before deciding; prices and availability can change.
What the specifications cannot tell you
- Overall speed: The available specifications identify Samsung’s processor but do not provide a comparable Apple processor detail or controlled head-to-head benchmark. They do not establish which phone is faster.
- Battery life: Samsung’s 5,000mAh typical-capacity figure cannot be directly compared with a missing Apple mAh figure, and capacity alone is not an endurance test. No independent battery comparison is established.
- Overall durability: Apple’s stated IP68 rating gives a defined water-resistance rating for the iPhone, but the cited comparison does not provide equivalent S23 Ultra durability information. This is not enough to rank overall durability.
- Camera winner: The available camera details are not a controlled comparison, and the Apple specification extract does not provide a comparable full camera breakdown. A universal photo-quality verdict would go beyond the evidence.
