A Netflix black screen has two distinct forms: you may hear sound while the picture is black, or both picture and sound may be absent. The correct fix depends on whether Netflix is running in a TV app, through a streaming device, console, phone adapter or computer, and whether every title is affected. Start by identifying the symptom, then check the TV input and physical video path before changing settings or resetting anything.
Identify exactly what is going wrong
Before unplugging equipment, observe the failure for a few seconds. The answers determine which Netflix troubleshooting path applies:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Black screen with sound: audio continues, but no picture appears or the picture turns black during playback.
- Black screen with no sound: neither audio nor video plays.
- Only one title affected: other shows or films play normally on the same device.
- All titles affected: the problem appears to be with the device, display connection, app environment or network rather than one program.
- When the screen goes black: note whether it happens before playback starts, immediately after pressing play or partway through a title.
- Which screen is black: determine whether the TV’s menus and the streaming device’s home screen are visible. A black Netflix image with visible menus points to a different path than a TV that cannot display any HDMI source.
Netflix describes a black screen with sound as usually indicating that the device or a video cable has stopped Netflix from showing video. That is a troubleshooting description, not a guarantee that the cable is defective; the same symptom can come from a TV input, receiver path, display setting or device software.
“If you hear sound but don’t see video, or if the video goes black while watching, it usually means an issue with your device or a video cable stopped Netflix from showing video.” — Netflix Help Center, “Black screen with sound”

Use this triage order
| What you observe | First checks | Likely escalation |
|---|---|---|
| Sound but no picture on a TV-connected device | Confirm the TV input, restart the device, then isolate HDMI and bypass intermediate equipment. | TV or device manufacturer if another TV works or picture settings/firmware are involved. |
| No sound and no picture on a TV-connected device | Check power, cable seating, TV input and the streaming device restart procedure. | Internet service provider if network checks fail; manufacturer for device-specific video faults. |
| Black screen while mirroring a phone | Stop relying on unsupported mirroring and use a supported connection or adapter. | Adapter, phone or TV manufacturer for connection compatibility. |
| Black screen in a computer browser | Use Netflix’s supported-browser guidance and test the browser on another title. | Browser or computer support if the supported configuration still fails. |
| Only one show or film has a video fault | Report that title’s problem to Netflix. | Netflix title-specific support rather than replacing hardware. |
Do these quick checks before deeper troubleshooting
- Leave the black screen visible long enough to determine whether audio continues or playback stops entirely.
- Open another Netflix title. If it plays, the fault may be limited to one program.
- Open the device’s home screen and another video app. This shows whether the display path works outside Netflix.
- Confirm that the TV and streaming device are powered on and that the remote is controlling the intended TV.
- Write down the exact connection: built-in TV app, HDMI streaming stick, console, set-top box, phone adapter or computer. Instructions vary by platform.
These observations prevent a factory reset or cable purchase when the evidence points to a single title or an incorrect input.
Fix a black screen on a TV-connected device
This section applies to streaming sticks, media players, set-top boxes, Apple TV, Blu-ray players, consoles and similar equipment connected to a television. Follow the steps in order; each one removes a different possible cause.
1. Select the correct TV input
Use the television remote’s Input, Source or similar control and select the HDMI input used by the streaming device. Confirm that the device and TV are both powered on. Input-control labels and menus vary by television, so consult the TV’s on-screen guide if the input list is unclear. A TV can show a blank screen simply because it is listening to a different HDMI socket.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If you move the cable to another port during testing, select that new port afterward. Do not judge the result while the TV remains on the old input. If the device’s home screen appears but Netflix playback remains black, the input selection is probably correct and you can continue to the video-path checks.
2. Restart the streaming device completely
- Unplug the streaming device from power.
- Press its physical power button once, then wait one minute. If the device has no usable power button, leave it unplugged for three minutes instead.
- Reconnect power and wait for the device to finish starting.
- Open Netflix and try the same title again.
This is a full power restart, not merely returning to the device’s home screen. Use the restart instructions for your exact model if its manufacturer specifies a different procedure. If the device is powered from a TV USB port, use the normal power source recommended for that device during the test so an underpowered connection does not confuse the result.
3. Check the HDMI connection and remove extra equipment
With the device and TV off, verify that an HDMI cable is firmly seated at both ends. Then perform controlled tests rather than changing several things at once:
- Reverse the two ends of the HDMI cable.
- Connect the streaming device directly to the TV, bypassing an AV receiver, sound system, HDMI switch or other intermediary.
- Move the cable to another HDMI port on the TV and select that new input.
- Try another known-good HDMI cable. A replacement HDMI cable is only a diagnostic option; Netflix does not endorse a particular brand, model or cable as a guaranteed cure.
Test the direct connection even if sound already comes through a receiver. The receiver or switch can pass audio while failing to pass the video signal that Netflix needs. If direct-to-TV works, reconnect one intermediate component at a time to identify which link causes the black screen.

If the device displays Netflix correctly on another television, Netflix says the HDMI port on the original TV may be the problem. Contact the TV manufacturer about that port instead of repeatedly resetting the streaming device. If it fails on both televisions, the device, cable or source settings deserve closer attention.
4. Separate a Netflix fault from a general display fault
Test the same HDMI input with another app or the device’s home screen. If the entire device interface is black, Netflix is unlikely to be the only cause; concentrate on power, HDMI, the TV input and device firmware. If menus appear but Netflix alone loses video, continue with the device-specific Netflix guidance and browser or app checks for that platform.
Change one variable at a time and note the result. For example, record whether the current cable works on a second port before replacing it. This creates useful evidence for support and avoids mistaking two simultaneous changes for a solution.
Compare the physical connection tests
| Test | What it isolates | How to interpret a picture that returns |
|---|---|---|
| Current port versus another TV HDMI port | A particular TV input | The original port may be faulty; ask the TV manufacturer about it. |
| Receiver or switch path versus direct-to-TV | Intermediate audio/video equipment | The receiver, switch or its protected-video handling needs investigation. |
| Existing cable versus another HDMI cable | The cable itself | The original cable is a possible cause, but Netflix does not rank or endorse brands. |
| Current TV versus a second TV | The display and its HDMI port | If the second TV works, focus on the original TV rather than replacing the streaming device. |
Built-in smart-TV Netflix apps
A television running Netflix internally has no external HDMI cable to isolate. First restart the TV using the manufacturer’s full power-cycle method, then reopen Netflix and test more than one title. Check whether the TV’s other apps display video. If all apps have picture problems, use the TV manufacturer’s picture and firmware troubleshooting rather than treating the issue as Netflix-only.
Netflix’s sound-related guidance notes that device picture settings and video troubleshooting differ by model. The TV manual or manufacturer support is therefore the correct source for options such as display mode, high-dynamic-range handling or firmware installation. Do not apply a setting from a different TV model simply because its menu looks similar.
If Netflix’s menus are visible but the picture disappears only after playback starts, record that timing for the manufacturer. It can distinguish a general panel or input failure from a protected-video or software problem, without assuming a particular cause.
Phones, tablets and TV adapters
Android screen mirroring
Netflix says Android apps or phone features that mirror the handset’s entire screen to a TV might not be supported. A successful connection for photos or another app does not prove that Netflix video mirroring is supported. Use a connection that Netflix and the device manufacturer identify as supported instead of repeatedly reconnecting an unsupported mirror session.

iPhone and iPad AirPlay or Screen Mirroring
Netflix states that AirPlay and Screen Mirroring are no longer supported for Netflix on iPhone or iPad. If those methods produce a black screen, switch to a supported connection rather than trying to repair the mirror feature.
Lightning video adapters
For an iPhone or iPad using a Lightning video adapter, Netflix identifies Apple adapter model numbers A1438 and A1621 as supported in its sound-related troubleshooting guidance. If your adapter has another model number, follow Netflix’s supported-adapter information before assuming the phone, television or HDMI cable has failed. The model-number check applies specifically to Lightning adapters; it should not be generalized to USB-C equipment.
USB-C or Thunderbolt video connections
For USB-C or Thunderbolt output, confirm that the TV is set to the input used by the adapter or cable and that the connection supports HDCP 2.2. If the hardware permits, reverse the cable or adapter orientation and try another TV port. These checks are connection-specific: a USB-C cable that charges a device or carries ordinary desktop video may not provide the protected video path Netflix requires.
When a phone works normally by itself but fails only after an adapter is attached, keep the phone, adapter model, TV input and cable details together when contacting support. That information is more useful than describing the symptom simply as “Netflix is down.”
Computers and browser playback
When Netflix is black but audio continues in a computer browser, Netflix directs users to its supported-browser information. Check the browser version and operating-system combination against that guidance, then test another title. If the supported browser shows the same failure across titles, the remaining cause may be the computer’s protected-video path, display connection or graphics configuration rather than the title itself.

Avoid treating an unsupported browser configuration as evidence that the TV or Netflix account is defective. If an external monitor is involved, note whether the computer’s own display shows video; this comparison helps identify which part of the display path needs support without assuming a specific hardware failure.
When one title is the only problem
Play a different show or film on the same device and connection. If other titles have normal picture and sound, Netflix’s overview recommends reporting the video problem for the affected title directly to Netflix. A title-specific report is more useful than replacing an HDMI cable or resetting the entire device, because the evidence does not show a general display failure.

Include the title name, whether sound continued, when the picture went black and which device was used. Do not infer that every device in the household has the same fault from one title failing on one screen.
Network checks for a black screen with no sound
Network problems are more relevant when the screen is blank and there is no sound, when playback never starts, or when several devices fail. Netflix’s no-sound guidance recommends checking for a local service outage, common modem or router problems, incorrect network settings and the state of the network connection.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Restart the modem and router using their manufacturer instructions, then wait for the connection to return.
- Test the connection at
fast.com. - Retry Netflix on the affected device after the network is available.
When contacting your internet service provider, report whether the fault affects one device or several and whether that device connects over Wi-Fi or a wired connection. Those details help the provider distinguish a local device problem from a wider network or service issue. Netflix advises contacting the ISP if its listed network steps do not resolve a no-sound black screen.
A network check should not replace the HDMI checks when sound is present and device menus are visible. Match the test to the symptom: a network result can explain playback that never begins, but it does not by itself prove why an already-playing picture vanished.
Device software, firmware and factory resets
For unresolved video faults, the device manufacturer may recommend a firmware update or restoration of the device’s original settings. These procedures are model-specific, so use the manufacturer’s manual or support channel rather than a generic reset sequence.
A factory restoration can remove installed apps, account information, saved settings and Wi-Fi details. Before starting, make sure you know the Netflix sign-in information and have the network credentials needed to set the device up again. A reset is a later escalation, not the first HDMI test. Ask whether the manufacturer has a less destructive firmware or video-setting check before accepting a full restoration.
How to decide where the fault belongs
| Evidence | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| Device works on another TV | Have the original TV’s HDMI port checked by its manufacturer. |
| Another cable or port restores video | Continue using the working port or cable; the failed component is the likely physical cause. |
| Direct-to-TV connection works but receiver path does not | Investigate the receiver, sound system or HDMI switch and its protected-video compatibility. |
| Only phone mirroring fails | Use a supported adapter or connection; do not infer that Netflix itself is offline. |
| Every title fails on one device after network tests | Use the device manufacturer’s video, firmware and reset guidance. |
| Several devices fail on the same network | Check the network and contact the ISP if Netflix’s connection steps do not help. |
| One title fails while others play | Report the title-specific problem to Netflix. |
A practical checklist before contacting support
- Write down whether sound is present.
- Note whether the fault affects one title or all titles.
- Record the device type and, where relevant, its model.
- Record the TV input and HDMI port being used.
- Try a direct connection to the TV, another HDMI port and another cable.
- Record whether the device works on a second TV.
- For a phone setup, record the adapter type and model number, or whether mirroring was used.
- For network failures, note Wi-Fi versus wired connection, whether other devices are affected and the result from
fast.com. - Note whether the device’s menus and other apps show a picture.
- Write down any change that restored video, even temporarily.
These observations keep support focused on the component that the tests actually implicate and prevent an unnecessary purchase or factory reset.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Netflix black but I can still hear sound?
Netflix says this usually points to the device or video cable no longer showing the picture. Confirm the TV input, restart the device, connect it directly to the TV, try another HDMI port and test another cable. If the device works on another TV, ask the original TV manufacturer about its HDMI port.
What should I do if Netflix has no picture and no sound?
Check that the TV and connected device are powered on, select the input used by the device, reseat the cables and perform the full unplug-and-restart procedure. If several devices are affected, check the network, test at fast.com and contact the ISP if Netflix’s network steps do not help.
Can I use Android screen mirroring for Netflix?
Netflix says Android mirroring apps or features might not be supported. Use a supported connection identified by Netflix and the device manufacturer instead of repeatedly reconnecting an unsupported mirror session.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDoes Netflix support AirPlay or Screen Mirroring from an iPhone or iPad?
Netflix states that AirPlay and Screen Mirroring are no longer supported for Netflix on iPhone or iPad. Use a supported adapter or another supported connection.
Which Apple Lightning adapters does Netflix identify as supported?
Netflix identifies Apple adapter model numbers A1438 and A1621 in its troubleshooting guidance. For another model number, consult Netflix’s supported-adapter information before replacing other equipment.
Why does changing the HDMI port sometimes fix the black screen?
The original TV port, cable seating or intermediate equipment may be preventing the video signal from reaching the display. Test ports one at a time, select the corresponding TV input and record which combination works.
Should I buy a new HDMI cable immediately?
No. First select the correct input, restart the device, bypass a receiver or switch, try another TV port and reverse the cable ends. Then a known-good replacement HDMI cable can serve as a diagnostic test; Netflix does not guarantee a particular brand or model.
Recommended Free Tools
What if only one Netflix movie or show is black?
Play another title on the same device. If other titles work, Netflix recommends reporting the video problem for the affected title rather than replacing hardware or resetting the device.
When should I reset a streaming device to factory settings?
Treat a factory reset as a later manufacturer-directed step after input, restart, HDMI, title and network checks. It can remove apps, account information, saved settings and Wi-Fi details, so gather your Netflix sign-in and network credentials first.
The Bottom Line
Resolve a Netflix black screen by matching the symptom to the connection: select the correct TV input, restart the device, isolate the HDMI path, avoid unsupported phone mirroring, and use Netflix’s supported-browser or adapter guidance on computers and mobile devices. Escalate to the TV/device manufacturer for display, firmware or port faults, and to the ISP when network checks fail.
