The key is to match the .NET build to the Pi’s processor architecture and Raspberry Pi OS edition. For a Pi 3, 4, or 5, a 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS installation paired with .NET for Linux Arm64 is the sensible starting point when your app’s dependencies support it. Use Arm32 when you need compatibility with a 32-bit OS or software.
Choose 64-bit or 32-bit before installing .NET
Raspberry Pi OS, the official free operating system for Raspberry Pi computers, is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit editions. Raspberry Pi lists the Pi 3, Pi 4, and Pi 5 among its models with 64-bit processors. That hardware capability does not by itself determine which .NET build to install: the OS edition and your application’s dependencies matter too. Raspberry Pi OS documentation

- Choose Arm64 for a 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS setup on Pi 3/4/5-class hardware when your app and native dependencies support it.
- Choose Arm32 when using 32-bit Raspberry Pi OS or when older hardware or software compatibility is the priority.
Raspberry Pi notes that ARMv8-A/AArch64 capability entered the product line with the Raspberry Pi 3 in 2016. Raspberry Pi 3 announcement Even with a compatible processor, verify that every native library, NuGet package, and peripheral your app requires supports the target architecture and OS.
Install Raspberry Pi OS and the matching .NET tools
Raspberry Pi recommends Raspberry Pi OS for most use cases and provides Raspberry Pi Imager as the installation method. Select the 32-bit or 64-bit edition that fits your board and application requirements. The OS documentation describes a package catalogue with more than 69,000 Debian packages; that does not mean Microsoft’s .NET framework is installed through the Pi’s standard apt repositories. Microsoft provides Linux Arm64 and Arm32 SDK and runtime builds in its .NET 8 download matrix. Install the SDK if you intend to build on the Pi; a runtime is sufficient to run a framework-dependent app published elsewhere. Follow Microsoft’s current Linux installation instructions and select the package for the Pi’s architecture and OS. .NET 8 downloads
Do not assume sudo apt install dotnet installs Microsoft’s .NET framework on Raspberry Pi OS. Raspberry Pi’s Build HAT documentation specifically says Microsoft .NET is not available through apt on Raspberry Pi and points users to Microsoft’s installation instructions. Build and publish for the Pi
You can create and test a project on the Pi or on a separate development computer. Raspberry Pi’s Build HAT example starts a console project with dotnet new console. Before publishing, identify the Pi’s architecture and ensure the app’s native dependencies support it.

For a self-contained publish, the application includes the runtime, so the target does not need a separate .NET runtime installation. | Deployment mode | What goes to the Pi | Runtime requirement on the Pi | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Framework-dependent | The app’s published files | Install the matching .NET runtime separately | Smaller app payload; runtime updates can be managed separately |
| Self-contained | The app and bundled runtime | No separate .NET runtime installation | Larger publish output; runtime is bundled with each release |
Publish for the actual target runtime identifier rather than relying on the development machine’s defaults. Confirm that the selected runtime identifier matches the Pi’s OS architecture, and check project-specific requirements for native libraries. Microsoft’s deployment guidance covers copying published files and starting the app on the board. Deploy .NET apps to single-board computers
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Deploy remotely with SSH and SCP
For a framework-dependent app, install the required runtime on the Pi first. Then enable SSH, copy the publish directory from your development machine with SCP, connect to the Pi, and run the entry assembly with dotnet. For example, once the files are on the Pi, the launch command is dotnet App.dll, replacing App.dll with your project’s entry assembly.

Check compatibility and operating needs
Architecture is only one part of whether an app will work. Confirm the following for the specific project and Pi you plan to use:
- The Raspberry Pi model and whether its OS is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The .NET SDK or runtime architecture, and the target runtime identifier used to publish.
- Support for every NuGet package, native library, and connected peripheral your application depends on.
- Available memory and storage, plus adequate power and cooling for the workload.
