Google’s Best Take can replace a person’s expression in a group photo with one from a nearby shot, helping fix blinks, turned-away faces, and mismatched smiles. On Pixel 10, Auto Best Take can capture and analyze the sequence for you; Pixel 8 and later support the manual Best Take editor in Google Photos.
What Best Take does—and what it doesn’t
Best Take combines faces from similar photos taken close together, so each person in the finished group picture can have a more flattering expression. Google introduced the feature for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro in October 2023. Its current Camera Help says it is available on Pixel 8 and later.

The result is an AI-composited image assembled from nearby moments, not a single untouched exposure. Google says the feature is designed to draw on pictures taken in quick succession so the composite still feels like the same moment. It can help when someone blinked, looked away, or had an expression that clashed with the rest of the group; it does not recover one original instant in which everyone happened to look that way.

How to use Best Take on Pixel 8 or later
- Take several similar group photos close together, keeping the group and framing as consistent as possible.
- Open the image in Google Photos and tap Edit.
- Open Actions or Tools, then choose Best Take. The exact label or location may vary with the app version.
- Tap a face bubble to see other expressions available from the nearby photos, then select the one you want.
- Review the composite and save it if you are happy with the result.
Google says Best Take identifies the related sequence using timestamps, then analyzes head poses and facial-expression signals. It can suggest faces where people are looking toward the lens and smiling; you choose which alternatives to use.
What Pixel 10 Auto Best Take changes
On Pixel 10, Auto Best Take handles capture and analysis after one shutter press, rather than requiring you to pick expressions individually in the editor. Google’s October 2025 guide says it can analyze up to 150 frames. That figure is a stated frame capacity, not a published guarantee that every group photo will produce a particular result.

- Palm Timer: starts a countdown when the user raises a palm, useful for hands-free shots.
- Camera Coach: uses Gemini models to offer framing, lighting, and camera-mode suggestions.
- Conversational editing: lets users edit images in Google Photos using conversational requests.
These tools address different problems: Best Take swaps expressions across nearby images, while Add Me is intended to include the photographer in the group.
