The indoor chime and phone notifications are separate Nest Doorbell outputs. The indoor chime setting controls whether a compatible home chime rings; alert settings control notifications sent to your phone or tablet. Quiet Time temporarily mutes the indoor chime and visitor announcements, but Google says an app notification can still arrive.
What each Nest Doorbell setting controls
| Control | What it affects | What it does not control |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor chime on/off | Whether a compatible indoor doorbell chime rings when a visitor presses the doorbell. | Whether the Home or Nest app sends a notification to a phone or tablet. |
| Quiet Time | Temporarily silences the indoor chime and suppresses visitor announcements on compatible speakers and displays. | It does not necessarily suppress phone notifications. Google notes that “The app can still send a notification to let you know that someone’s at the door.” Google’s settings guide |
| Digital chime duration | How long a supported digital chime plays. | Phone notification preferences or delivery. |
| Doorbell alerts and app/device notification settings | Whether activity alerts are delivered to a phone or tablet, subject to the app, device, and notification settings. | Whether a wired indoor chime is enabled. |
Google describes camera and doorbell alerts as notifications on a phone or tablet when a device detects important activity. Set those preferences in Google Home or Nest; a device’s general Home app notifications can also block activity alerts. See Google’s camera and doorbell alerts guide and guide to Google Home app notifications.

How to mute the indoor chime without muting phone alerts
For a lasting mute, turn off the indoor-chime control. This does not turn off phone notifications. The general Home app path is doorbell tile > Settings > Doorbell controls; labels can vary by model and app revision. Google provides Android and iOS directions in its settings guide. Supported legacy Nest app setups have an Indoor chime On/Off control.

For a temporary quiet period, use Quiet Time instead. It silences the indoor chime and visitor announcements while enabled; app notifications can still arrive. When Quiet Time ends, the doorbell resumes its current chime setting. If you only want to change how long a supported digital chime rings, adjust its duration in the Home app’s doorbell settings rather than changing phone alerts.

Why the chime may not ring: model and installation matter
Chime options depend on the doorbell model and how it is installed. A battery Nest Doorbell installed wire-free cannot use the home’s existing doorbell chime. Digital chimes, which use internal speakers rather than moving parts, work only with Nest doorbells wired to the home’s doorbell system. A battery Nest Doorbell may also replace a wired doorbell and use the home chime when installed with wires. Google explains these distinctions in its battery doorbell installation guide and chime settings guide.
For a wire-free installation, Google recommends connecting a compatible Google speaker or display and setting up visitor announcements if you want an audible indoor notice. That announcement is separate from both the home’s physical chime and phone notifications.

Google’s compatibility guidance says the Nest Doorbell (wired), Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen), and Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen) require the included chime connector. It helps the wiring provide constant power and protects the chime. The battery model does not need that connector. Check the chime compatibility guide for your model.

The indoor chime does not ring
- Check that the indoor-chime setting is on and Quiet Time is not active.
- Confirm that the doorbell is wired to the existing chime if you expect that chime to ring. A wire-free battery installation cannot use it.
- For a compatible wired setup, check power and wiring, including the required chime connector on the wired models listed in Google’s compatibility guidance.
- If you rely on a Google speaker or display for a wire-free announcement, check that the doorbell and speaker or display are online and that visitor announcements are set up.
Your phone does not receive an alert
- Check the doorbell’s alert preferences in Google Home or Nest.
- Check Google Home app notification settings and your phone or tablet’s operating-system notification permissions.
- Confirm that the doorbell is powered and online. A working indoor chime setting does not guarantee that the app can deliver a phone notification.
The chime and alert controls are separate settings paths even though both respond to a doorbell press. Troubleshoot the output that is missing rather than assuming that muting one has disabled the other.
