Before opening a Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) account, verify both the brokerage firm and the office or branch you will use: match the firm’s legal name and Trading Right Entitlement Certificate (TREC) details in PSX’s official listings, then confirm its securities-broker licence with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). After those checks, compare written charges and services, read the account terms, and understand how your securities will be held through the Central Depository Company (CDC).

1. Collect the broker’s exact details

Ask the firm for its full legal name, SECP securities-broker licence number, PSX TREC number, official website and helpline, and the exact address of the registered office or branch you plan to use. PSX’s Investor Awareness Guide advises investors to obtain and verify broker registration details. Do not rely only on a salesperson’s message, a social-media profile, or a search result.

2. Match the firm and branch in PSX’s listings

Start at PSX’s Select Your Stock-Broker page and follow its links to the TREC-holder and registered-office/branch information. Compare the legal entity name, TREC details, and the specific location or branch you intend to visit or use. A firm’s name appearing in a third-party directory, old screenshot, or outdated article is not a substitute for checking PSX’s current information close to account opening.

PSX’s Investor Awareness Guide calls verifying broker registration the “first prudent step” to ensure that trading is through a duly registered person and at a registered office or branch. Its Know Your Rights as an Investor article, published 21 August 2024, likewise says customers can verify TREC status on the PSX website by checking the firm and its registered offices and branches.

3. Confirm the SECP securities-broker licence

Check the firm against SECP’s official Brokers & Agents – Licensing information, and make sure the licensed entity is the same legal entity listed by PSX. A TREC-holder entry by itself does not establish that a broker’s SECP licence is current. SECP states that securities brokerage is a regulated activity, that a TREC holder applies for a securities-broker licence through PSX, and that the broker licence is valid for one year. Recheck the current status immediately before applying; do not infer that a licence remains valid from a past approval or directory copy.

4. Resolve identity or address mismatches before sharing documents

Confirm that the office or branch is one PSX lists for the broker. If a licence number, legal name, address, website, phone number, or payment instruction differs, pause. Contact the firm using contact details in official PSX information and ask it to explain the discrepancy. Do not send identity documents or money until you have independently resolved it. PSX advises investors to deal at registered offices or branches.

This check establishes identity and regulatory status; it does not guarantee that a broker is financially risk-free, suitable for you, or capable of producing investment returns. PSX warns that if an unregistered party misappropriates money or securities or goes out of business, an investor may have limited recourse, including difficulty recovering assets or lodging a complaint with SECP, PSX, CDC, or NCCPL.

5. Compare services and total charges

Once the regulatory checks match, compare firms on the same basis. PSX’s broker-selection guidance suggests looking at communication, understanding of your objectives, research material, online trading, trade confirmations, charges, and branch proximity. Ask each firm for its written commission and transaction-fee schedule, including applicable CDC charges and any other fees, before signing. Compare the services included as well as the amounts; a low quoted commission alone does not show the total cost or quality of service.

  • Trading and support: Check whether online trading is available, what help channels the firm offers, and how it communicates with clients.
  • Research and confirmations: Ask whether research material is provided and how promptly trade confirmations are delivered.
  • Cost: Obtain the complete written schedule, including brokerage commission, transaction charges, CDC charges, and any other applicable fees.
  • Access: Consider the listed branch location and whether you can reliably reach the firm through its official channels.

6. Review account documents and custody choices

Open the brokerage account in your own name and read the account-opening form and terms before signing. PSX provides an Account Opening Checklist; compare the broker’s paperwork with PSX’s standard account-opening form and checklist, and keep signed copies. Ask how to obtain statements and trade confirmations, and confirm your client or account number and Unique Identification Number (UIN) arrangements.

Understand which CDC arrangement will hold your securities. A CDC sub-account is maintained through the broker, while a CDC Investor Account gives the investor greater individual custody and control over securities, according to PSX. Ask the broker to explain the setup, how you will access records, and any related charges before choosing.

PSX advises operating the account personally where possible. If you authorise another person to act for you, give the broker written authorisation and retain a copy; you remain responsible for transactions made on that person’s instructions. Do not make a cash deposit. Follow the broker’s documented funding process and retain payment records.
