If the subject is sharp but the background looks too soft, you probably changed the Portrait depth effect—not the camera’s focus. In Photos, edit the image and reduce Depth Control blur, or turn Portrait off. If the subject itself is blurry, troubleshoot focus, close-up distance, or a smudged lens instead. The exact controls depend on your iPhone model and iOS version.
What “aperture” changes on an iPhone
In the iPhone Portrait workflow, Aperture or Depth Control changes the strength of the simulated depth-of-field effect: the selected subject stays sharp while foreground or background areas are blurred. Apple describes the control as a way to adjust portrait background blur in its Portrait guide. Supported iPhones can also capture depth information in Photo mode and let you apply a Portrait effect later.

That effect is different from focusing the camera on the subject. If the background became blurrier after an Aperture adjustment but the subject remains crisp, the photo may be focused correctly; the depth effect is simply stronger. Apple’s guide confirms that the control adjusts blur, but does not establish one slider direction or set of f-number values for every iPhone. Follow the labels and preview on your device rather than assuming a particular f-number will behave identically across models.
Reduce or remove Portrait blur in Photos
- Open the picture: In Photos, open the image and tap Edit.
- Adjust the depth effect: Use the Depth Control slider to reduce the blur. On supported models, you can tap another subject in the image to change the focus point.
- Remove Portrait: If you do not want the effect, choose Portrait Off when that control is available.
Apple’s Portrait editing guide covers changing blur and reverting saved edits to the original. If the menu or wording differs on your phone, consult the guide for your model and software version; not every iPhone supports every Portrait editing control.

Diagnose the blur by where it appears
| What looks blurry | Likely issue to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Background or foreground, while the subject is sharp | Portrait or depth effect | Reduce Depth Control or turn Portrait off in Photos. |
| Subject at ordinary shooting distance | Focus may have landed elsewhere | Tap the subject in Camera; use AE/AF Lock if supported. |
| Subject in a very close-up shot | Close-range macro focus or camera switching | Back up, or tap .5x to switch to Ultra Wide macro on supported models. |
| Much or all of the frame | Smudged lenses or a camera problem | Clean the front and rear lenses; seek Apple service if blur persists. |
If the subject itself is blurry
Set focus on the subject
In Camera, tap the subject on screen to set the focus area there. On supported interfaces, touch and hold that area to lock focus and exposure (AE/AF Lock); tap again to unlock. Apple explains these controls in its camera tools guide. Setting focus can correct a focus target that landed elsewhere, but it cannot restore detail lost to movement during the shot or a camera fault.
For close-up blur, change the distance or camera
Some iPhone models switch to the Ultra Wide camera for macro photography. If a close-up image is blurry, Apple recommends backing up or tapping .5x to switch to Ultra Wide, where supported. See Apple’s macro photography guide for the device-dependent controls.

Clean the lenses
Smudges on either the front or rear camera lens can soften images. Apple recommends cleaning the lenses with a microfiber cloth in its camera and flash troubleshooting guidance. Cleaning addresses dirt or fingerprints; it will not change Portrait blur, correct a missed focus target, or solve a hardware problem. If the camera remains blurry after basic troubleshooting, Apple advises seeking service.
