For personal use in 2026, the practical choice is Zoom or Microsoft Teams Free—not Zoom versus an active Skype service. Microsoft retired consumer Skype on May 5, 2025, and directs former users to Teams Free or to export their data. Skype for Business is separate and was not affected.
Is Skype still available for personal calls?
No. Microsoft states, “As of May 5th, 2025, Skype is retired.” The consumer Skype service is no longer a current option for calls and messaging. Microsoft points former users toward Teams Free and provides an option to export Skype data. Microsoft’s retirement guidance explains the transition.

How do Zoom and Teams Free differ for personal use?
Zoom remains a live choice for hosting personal video meetings. Teams Free is Microsoft’s current personal and small-group communication option, with calls, messages, file sharing, meeting hosting, calendar features, and communities, according to Microsoft. These product descriptions and limits are not a hands-on comparison of call quality, privacy, or ease of use.

What does Zoom’s 40-minute limit actually mean?
The 40-minute limit applies to almost all meetings scheduled and hosted by a Zoom Basic user. It does not mean every Zoom meeting ends after 40 minutes: a meeting hosted by a licensed user follows the host’s license limit, even if a Basic user attends. Zoom’s support guidance also identifies a narrow exception for a host-only meeting that remains active.

For a personal meeting where you are the host, the practical point is to plan around the Basic limit rather than assuming a participant’s paid account or license will extend it.

What transfers when you move from Skype to Teams Free?
Microsoft says former Skype users can sign in to Teams Free using their Skype credentials. Contacts and chats transfer automatically, but this is not a promise that every item in Skype history will appear. Microsoft lists these exclusions:

Which service should you choose?
Choose Zoom if meeting hosting is the main need
Zoom Basic has a clearly stated default capacity of 100 participants, but nearly all meetings you host on that license are limited to 40 minutes. It is a straightforward fit when you want to host video meetings and that duration and capacity suit your use.

Choose Teams Free if you are continuing from Skype
Teams Free is the more direct route if you want to retain eligible Skype contacts and chats or prefer Microsoft’s combination of calls, messaging, file sharing, calendar features, and communities. Review the migration exclusions before relying on it to preserve an important conversation history.
Check the account condition before comparing call limits
Microsoft’s 30-hour group-call duration and 300-person capacity figures apply to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers using Teams Free. They should not be treated as universal Teams Free allowances or directly compared with Zoom Basic as though both figures described free accounts.

What do you need to join a Teams Free meeting?
A camera and microphone are optional. Microsoft’s browser joining instructions explain that you can grant camera and microphone access or continue without audio or video. Built-in laptop or phone equipment may be sufficient; external equipment is a personal choice, not a requirement or a way to change a service’s plan limits.
