Yes. You can often keep an old operating system and its software usable after the original computer fails by running it in a virtual machine or emulating the older PC in software. The right choice depends on what the program needs: a compatible guest operating system, a particular processor architecture, or period-specific hardware and peripherals. None of these methods guarantees that every old game, driver, or device will work unchanged.
What it means to run an old PC on a new one
A host is the physical computer and operating system running virtualization or emulation software. A guest is the older operating system running inside a virtual machine (VM). The VM presents virtual hardware to the guest, which can let an older OS run without installing it directly on the new computer.

That is different from putting an old OS on a separate hard drive and booting it directly. A VM keeps the legacy environment inside the host system, so you can switch to it without restarting the computer. Whether a particular Windows 95 or Windows XP installation works depends on the virtual hardware, drivers, and software involved.

Choose the approach that matches the software

VirtualBox documents a virtual-device set for guest operating systems; 86Box emphasizes more detailed choices of older PC components. QEMU’s broad architecture support may be relevant when the software’s processor requirements differ from the host. These are different tools for different compatibility problems, not interchangeable guarantees.

Check what the old software actually depends on
Before choosing a tool, identify the dependencies that matter to the program. An application that only needs its old operating system may be a reasonable VM candidate; one tied to a particular PC design or peripheral may need emulation or additional testing.
- Operating system and processor: Can the guest OS run with the virtual CPU and system features available in your chosen setup?
- Graphics and sound: Does the program rely on a particular graphics mode, acceleration behavior, or sound device?
- Storage: Does it expect a particular disk format, controller, or removable-media workflow?
- Peripherals: Does it need a device that the VM can expose or the emulator can reproduce?
- Network: Does it require a legacy network stack or a specific network environment? Do not connect an obsolete system to the public internet casually.
- Host platform and portability: Can the virtualization or emulation software run on your current host, and can you preserve its files and configuration if you move to another computer?
Compatibility is specific to the guest OS, application, virtual or emulated hardware profile, host, and peripherals. The documentation for these tools does not establish that a particular old PC image will boot unchanged, or that all legacy software will work.

Preserve and move a VM carefully
Virtual machines are files and configuration, not just an installation that exists inside an application. Oracle’s VirtualBox 7.2 documentation says, “You can also save, copy, export and transfer VMs between hosts.” That makes migration possible, but does not promise that every guest behaves identically after a move.

- Keep the VM’s files and configuration together. Confirm what belongs to the VM before moving it; available disk space limits how many VM files you can keep.
- Make a separate backup. Do not treat a snapshot or a portable drive as a substitute for an independent backup.
- Test a copy first. Try configuration changes or a move on a duplicate rather than the only preserved copy.
- Check the guest after migration. Confirm that it boots and that the applications, drivers, and devices you need still behave as expected.
An external SSD can be optional storage for VM files, but it is not required by the virtualization approach. The cited documentation does not recommend a particular drive, capacity, or speed.

Know where support ends
Virtualization does not make an old operating system current or guarantee support from its software vendor. VirtualBox notes that guest OS choices depend on the host and the virtual hardware available. Microsoft’s virtualization support page says that, except as described there, Microsoft does not test or support its software when run with non-Microsoft virtualization software; that policy concerns supported versions of Windows Server and should not be generalized to consumer Windows versions.
Expect to troubleshoot the exact combination you want to preserve. The available documentation explains how these tools can provide virtual or emulated systems, but it does not provide a universal compatibility list or success rate for old applications.
