What Can MCP Tool Metadata Reveal Before You Trust a Server?

A practical static review of MCP tool metadata can flag suspicious interfaces, but annotations and schemas cannot prove what server code does at runtime.

You can inspect an MCP server’s advertised tools before enabling it: list the tools and review their names, descriptions, input schemas, and annotations. That static check can reveal suspicious or inconsistent metadata, but it cannot prove that the server’s code behaves safely.

What can a static review tell you?

An MCP client can list the tools registered by a server and expose each tool’s name, description, and argument schema. The MCP TypeScript SDK’s client guide demonstrates listing tools and inspecting their JSON Schemas. Those fields describe the interface the server advertises; they do not establish what its implementation will do when called.

The MCP sources cited here describe metadata interfaces, annotation limits, and name validation. They do not establish a canonical manifest scanner or a complete pre-install security standard. Treat this as a focused review of advertised metadata, not a certification.

How do you inspect an MCP server before installing it?

  1. Capture the advertised tools

Use the client’s tool-list operation and preserve each tool’s name, description, and input schema. Keep the captured metadata together with the server identity and version you reviewed, so you can tell later whether the advertised surface changed.

    • Simplified Management and Deployment: Features a user-friendly management console that provides comprehensive network automation and visibility, coupled with Zero Touch Integration with Fortinet’s Security Fabric for easy deployment.
  2. Check whether each tool fits the server’s role

Read descriptions and schemas for unexpected permissions, broad or vague inputs, suspicious command or path arguments, and purposes that do not match the server’s stated role. These are practical review questions, not official MCP requirements.

  3. Look for mismatches and unnecessary breadth

Compare the description with the argument schema. A narrow claim paired with inputs that could target arbitrary files, commands, or external resources deserves scrutiny. Metadata alone cannot show whether the implementation enforces the limits the schema suggests.

  4. Record what you reviewed

Save the snapshot and note the server version. A later update may change the tool list or schemas, so a prior review applies only to the metadata captured at that point.

Are MCP tool annotations trustworthy?

Annotations can provide a useful vocabulary for risk. Examples include readOnlyHint, destructiveHint, idempotentHint, and openWorldHint. They are claims about behavior, not proof of it.

In its March 16, 2026 post, “Tool Annotations as Risk Vocabulary: What Hints Can and Can’t Do,” MCP maintainer Ola Hungerford, Sam Morrow of GitHub, and Luca Chang of AWS explain: “Every property is a hint. The spec is explicit about this: annotations are not guaranteed to faithfully describe tool behavior, and clients must treat them as untrusted unless they come from a trusted server.” The post also describes the cautious default for an unannotated tool: assume it may be mutating, destructive, non-idempotent, and open-world. That is the post’s account of the specification’s defaults, not a scanner rule. See the MCP post on tool annotations.

Do not let a claimed read-only hint override a description or schema that suggests broader effects, and do not treat a reassuring annotation as a safety verdict.

What mechanical checks can you apply to tool names?

The MCP Python SDK’s tool-name validation guidance documents a convention of 1–128 characters, case-sensitive names using ASCII letters, digits, underscores, dashes, or dots. It advises against spaces, commas, and other special characters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reviewer can flag empty, excessively long, or nonconforming names as formatting or compatibility concerns. A name that follows the convention is not evidence that the server is trustworthy or benign.

What can static manifest review not establish?

A tool list and its schemas do not reveal the full behavior of implementation code. Metadata review cannot establish what dependencies do, whether a server downloads or executes other code, what network requests it makes, or whether behavior changes after an update. The reviewed MCP sources do not describe a static scanner that proves runtime safety.

Keep metadata review separate from any runtime controls or code review your environment requires. The available sources also do not establish a universal scanner policy or which client configuration formats a scanner should parse. MCP’s SEP tracker is a live proposal tracker, so proposal statuses may change; it is not itself evidence of a canonical scanner.
