Its creator, Sriharsha Reddy Maddula, built it for Hack Club’s WebOS 1 workshop. The project combines movable app windows, a virtual file system, small interactive apps, and desktop-style controls in one web experience.
What NebulaOS is—and what it is not
Maddula describes NebulaOS as “a personal OS that runs entirely in your browser.” The operating-system metaphor is the point: instead of arranging a portfolio as a conventional page of scrolling sections, the project opens into a desktop where visitors can explore the author’s work through windows and apps. It is best understood as an interactive portfolio concept, not a conventional operating system or a claim that a browser can replace one.

The creator’s post links to a live demo and source code. The demo is an invitation to explore the project, but its current availability and browser compatibility have not been independently established.
How the desktop works
The window manager is the core of the experience. According to Maddula’s description, users can drag and resize windows, minimize or maximize them, and snap them to screen edges. Opening several apps therefore feels closer to working at a desktop than navigating between ordinary web pages. The post also says open windows survive a page refresh.

Other desktop conventions round out the concept: a boot sequence, lock screen, power menu with lock, restart and shut down choices, a right-click desktop menu, toast notifications, and Spotlight-style search opened with Ctrl+Space.
Apps and shared files
The post lists eight apps: About Me, Files, Terminal, Paint, Notes, Calculator, Snake, and Settings. Files and Terminal are connected to the same virtual file system, so the file view is not just a separate mock interface: the author says users can browse the virtual files in Files or work with them in Terminal.
The Terminal supports the listed commands ls, cd, cat, and tree. Alongside portfolio content, the remaining apps make the desktop explorable as a small collection of utilities and diversions.

Personalization and smaller details
Settings offers four themes, and the wallpaper picker accepts an uploaded image. These choices reinforce the desktop framing by letting visitors alter how the environment looks rather than simply reading fixed portfolio content.
The feature list also includes notifications and the desktop context menu. Together with search and power controls, they supply familiar interactions that make the interface feel like a cohesive environment rather than a set of disconnected demos.
How the author says it was built
Maddula identifies React, TypeScript, and Vite as the stack, with no UI library. In the post’s account, each open window is represented as an object in state containing an ID, position, size, z-order, and minimized state. Focusing a window raises its z-order so it appears in front of others.

Window dragging uses pointer events and setPointerCapture. The apps are React components registered in a single list, giving the project a common place to associate an app with its window content. These are the implementation details reported by the author; the linked repository was not independently inspected.
Four bugs that shaped the implementation
A blank screen in Terminal
The author reports that a React effect used an arrow expression that returned the value from scrollIntoView(). React interpreted that returned value as an effect cleanup function, causing a crash. The reported correction was to use braces in the arrow function so the effect returns nothing.
A Snake high score stuck at zero
In the game loop, an effect retained a stale state closure. Maddula says the fix was to keep a local counter inside the effect for game logic and reserve state for displaying the value.

A snap preview in the wrong place
The snap preview was rendered inside a window. The author says that window’s backdrop-filter made it the containing block for fixed-position children, changing where the preview was positioned. Moving the preview to the app root resolved the issue in the reported implementation.
Windows appearing beyond phone screens
New windows initially used a fixed horizontal position that could be wider than a 375-pixel screen. The author says newly opened and restored windows were clamped to the viewport to keep them on screen.

How the project is deployed
The post says a GitHub Actions workflow builds the Vite app and publishes it to GitHub Pages on every push. For an initial deployment, the author’s stated setup caveat is to configure GitHub Pages with Source set to GitHub Actions. The post also says Vite’s base is set to ./, allowing the site to work from a subpath.
Maddula names a music player, a mini browser app, and real multi-desktop workspaces as possible future additions. Those are ideas mentioned in the post, not features established as part of the current project.
