“Starter” and “rotation player” describe how a coach uses a rookie in games. “Two-way contract,” “standard contract,” “assignment,” and “G League call-up” describe contract or roster status. They are separate labels: a player can be a two-way player who appears in the G League, or a standard-contract player assigned there.
What do “starter” and “rotation player” mean?
Starter
A starter usually appears in a team’s opening lineup. It is a game role, not a contract category or a guarantee of a particular amount of playing time later in the game.

Rotation player
A rotation player receives regular playing time as part of the coach’s game plan. A rookie can be a rotation player off the bench or a starter who remains in the regular playing group. These terms are ordinary basketball descriptions, not formal NBA contract classifications.
What is a two-way contract?
A two-way player has an NBA contract and is connected to the NBA team and its G League affiliate. The contract allows the player to appear for both teams within season-specific limits. The official NBA G League rules and overview set the 2025-26 framework below; these limits should not be treated as permanent rules.

- Roster maximum: Each NBA team could have up to three two-way players, in addition to up to 15 players on standard NBA contracts.
- Contract length and salary: A two-way deal could last one or two seasons. The stated 2025-26 annual salary was $636,435, equal to half the zero-years-of-service NBA minimum. For a contract signed during the regular season, the amount was prorated for the remaining season.
- NBA Active List limit: A two-way player could be on his NBA team’s Active List for no more than 50 regular-season games.
- Under-Fifteen Games limit: A team could have two-way players on its Active List for no more than 90 such games in aggregate. An Under-Fifteen Game is a regular-season game in which the team has fewer than 15 players signed to standard NBA contracts; each two-way player active in that game counts toward the total.
- Service-year eligibility: Eligibility is generally limited to players who will not have more than four NBA years of service at any point during the two-way deal. The official rules describe a narrow one-year exception for a player with four service years who spent a full NBA regular season on a team roster without appearing in an NBA game.
For 2025-26, two-way players did not accrue “Days of Service” for either team, so the previous 45-day service limit did not apply. Older summaries that present that 45-day limit as current do not describe the 2025-26 rule.
Postseason eligibility
A player under a two-way contract could travel and practice with the NBA team during the play-in and playoffs, but could not be on an NBA playoff roster while remaining on that contract. A player signed or converted to a standard NBA contract before the team’s final regular-season game may be eligible for the postseason roster, subject to applicable roster rules. See the NBA’s CBA 101 and the NBA Constitution and By-Laws for league contract and roster context.

How do the G League pathways differ?
| Label | What it describes | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | Game role | Usually begins the game in the opening lineup; does not specify contract status. |
| Rotation player | Game role | Receives regular playing time and may start or come off the bench. |
| Two-way player | Contract status and affiliate relationship | Has a two-way NBA contract and may play for the NBA team and its G League affiliate within that season’s rules. |
| Assignee | Assignment from NBA roster to G League | Remains under an NBA contract; the NBA team retains exclusive recall rights. |
| G League call-up | Contract transition | A player on a G League contract signs an NBA contract with an NBA team. |
Assignment is not the same as a two-way deal: an assignee remains an NBA-contracted player. A call-up is different again because it moves a player from a G League contract to an NBA contract. The G League also has entry routes such as affiliate players, draft-rights players, local tryout players, and G League draft selections. The league’s FAQ reported that 109 NBA players were assigned to G League teams during the 2024-25 regular season and all 109 were recalled. That is a league-reported count for that season, not evidence that assignment guarantees a specific NBA role.

Why does G League experience matter for rookies?
The G League gives NBA-affiliated players a setting to play and develop while remaining connected to professional teams, but it is not a guaranteed promotion ladder. NBA G League reported that 51 percent of players on 2025-26 NBA start-of-season rosters had G League experience, tying the previous season. This is a figure about experience across NBA rosters, not the share of rookies who advance from the G League or become regular NBA rotation players. See the league’s 2025-26 overview.

How to describe a rookie’s situation accurately
- Describe game usage: Say whether the player starts and whether he is used regularly in the rotation.
- Identify contract status: Distinguish a standard NBA contract, a two-way contract, and a G League contract.
- Note any assignment: If the NBA team sends a player to the G League, clarify whether he remains on a standard NBA contract or is a two-way player.
- Check the season’s rules: Two-way game limits and postseason eligibility are season-specific; do not infer current rules from older 45-day references.
