First check whether the saved photo is actually underexposed or whether your screen is making it look dark. If the file looks dark in Gallery and on another display, improve the lighting and capture conditions; if it looks different only on your Galaxy screen, check display brightness settings.
Check whether the photo or the screen is dark
Open the saved image and compare it with the camera preview. If possible, view the same file in another app or on another display. This is a practical way to distinguish an image-exposure problem from a display issue; Samsung’s guidance treats underexposure and screen brightness as separate concerns.

- The saved file looks dark in multiple viewers: troubleshoot exposure and shooting conditions.
- The file looks normal elsewhere but dark on your Galaxy: check the phone’s display brightness and related settings.
- The preview is dark but the saved file is not: investigate preview or camera-control settings rather than assuming the photo itself is underexposed.
If the saved photo is genuinely underexposed
Samsung identifies lighting, camera settings, shooting distance, and environmental conditions as factors that can contribute to poor or dark photos. Samsung Support explains: “An underexposed photo will appear dark and fuzzy or spotty, whereas overexposure will cause it to look bright and washed out.”

Move to brighter, more even light and take another photo of the same subject. Avoid pointing the camera directly at a strong light source: Samsung notes that bright light directed at the camera can create both overexposed and underexposed areas. Comparing the new image with the original helps show whether lighting was a factor.

Use Night mode for low-light scenes, if available
For a dim scene, look for Camera > More > Night. Night mode availability varies by Galaxy model and software version, so the option may not appear on every device. Samsung describes Night mode as combining 30 images into one photo; that figure is from Samsung, with no publication year stated in the search result, and should not be assumed to apply to every model or software version.
If the camera preview is dark before you take the photo
On devices where Good Lock and Camera Assistant are supported, advanced photo controls may be affecting the preview. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance suggests checking these controls only when the preview is the problem:

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

- Open Camera and tap the settings icon.
- Open Camera Assistant, then its Advanced Photo mode controls.
- Set Minimum shutter speed and Maximum ISO to None, then check the preview again.
Camera Assistant is available only in countries that support Good Lock, and labels or availability can vary. These are advanced controls, not a routine fix for every dark saved photo.

Samsung’s instructions for the Galaxy S26 series say the camera screen may dim during shooting because of Dim strobing, Adaptive brightness, or Extra dim. Check those settings and raise the display brightness under Settings > Display. This guidance is specific to the cited S26 article; menus and feature names can differ on other Galaxy models and software versions. Samsung also describes Adaptive brightness as adjusting screen brightness in response to surrounding light.

In a narrower example, Samsung explains that when the camera recognizes the moon, it may darken the background to make the moon clearer. That describes moon photography and does not establish that Galaxy phones generally darken photos after saving.
Tell underexposure apart from spots, glare, and flicker
A uniformly dark image is different from lens-related marks or lighting artifacts. Match the fix to the symptom:

- Dark or colored spots: Samsung advises powering off the phone and gently wiping the lens with a soft, dry or microfiber cloth. Avoid pressing hard or using liquids or cleaning solutions. Cleaning is for dirt-related marks, not a general fix for underexposure.
- Glare or light streaks: Samsung notes these can be more noticeable with a dirty lens or high zoom. Clean the lens if needed, change the shooting angle, or avoid strong light sources.
- Dark horizontal bands or flicker indoors: indoor lighting can produce this effect. Samsung suggests adjusting shutter speed in Pro mode; flicker can be related to lighting frequency.
When the problem continues
If the same saved image remains dark across viewers after you try improved lighting, note your exact Galaxy model and One UI version, and whether the preview, saved file, or both are affected. Those details matter because camera features and settings vary by model, software version, and country.
