Make the agent stop before checkout, review the exact order it is about to place, and approve only that order. If the product, seller, quantity, price, or delivery details change afterward, require a new review. This reduces the risk of a bad purchase; it cannot guarantee an agent will never make a mistake.
What to check before approving a purchase
Review the order preview—not just the agent’s recommendation. Before confirming, check:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Product and variant: Confirm the exact model, size, color, compatibility, or other detail that distinguishes the item you want.
- Quantity: Check how many units are in the order.
- Merchant: Make sure the seller is one you accept, especially if a marketplace listing has multiple sellers.
- Total cost: Review the price plus shipping, taxes, fees, and any other charges shown before submission.
- Delivery: Verify the destination address and delivery option.
- Extras: Look for subscriptions, warranties, add-ons, or other recurring or additional charges.
This checklist applies the principle that approval should cover the action you actually intend to take. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet recommends previews and explicit approval for high-impact or irreversible actions; it does not prescribe this specific shopping field list.
Make approval apply to the exact order
Approve only the order shown in the preview. If a material detail changes after you review it—such as the item, quantity, seller, total, or destination—stop and inspect the revised order before approving again. A confirmation for one order should not authorize a different one.
#1 Best Overall
For a shopper, this means declining or pausing when the final screen no longer matches what you checked. For an agent provider or operator, it means binding approval to the intended action and its parameters, rather than treating a general “yes” as permission for any later purchase. OWASP recommends validating approval and policy at the execution boundary, using protections such as expiry and replay prevention, and failing closed when validation fails.
Set limits before the agent shops
Give the agent specific constraints before it searches: the product requirements, a maximum price, acceptable sellers, and whether substitutions are allowed. Avoid open-ended instructions such as “buy the best one” when the agent has authority to spend money. Keep the ability to search and compare separate from permission to submit an order, and retain final approval for checkout.

Product pages, ads, reviews, and other website text should be treated as untrusted input, not as instructions that override your limits. OpenAI has described prompt injection, jailbreaks, and phishing attempts on websites as risks for computer-using agents. Its announcement says its own CUA model is trained to ask for confirmation before finalizing tasks with external side effects, including submitting an order. That is a description of OpenAI’s system, not a guarantee about every shopping agent.

| Control | What it does | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer-side review | You inspect the order preview and actively approve the purchase. | It depends on the preview showing the important details clearly and you checking them. |
| System-side enforcement | A separate policy or execution layer checks the agent’s authority and approval before allowing the purchase, and can record the action. | It requires implementation by the agent provider or operator; an instruction to the model alone is not the same technical boundary. |
For systems that can spend money, the stronger design combines both: a clear preview for the person and an independent check that blocks execution if approval or policy validation is missing. OWASP recommends that the execution component verify scope, privilege, and approval rather than relying only on the agent’s own decision.

What to do when an agent gets it wrong repeatedly
Pause checkout authority while you investigate. Check whether the error came from an unclear request, an unsuitable seller or substitution, a misleading page, or a workflow that let the cart change after approval. Tighten the relevant constraints and make sure the approval step displays the details you need to verify.
For businesses using agents with customers, the UK Competition and Markets Authority advises checking that results are correct and behavior is intended, maintaining active human oversight, and promptly refining prompts or workflows when problems arise. How common are autonomous shopping purchases?
Consumer shopping agents remain relatively bounded: UK Department for Business and Trade research describes early systems as able to search, compare, and initiate simple actions with user confirmation, while fully autonomous consumer use remains limited. The research also notes uncertainty about how quickly more autonomous systems will emerge. Do not assume every agent can complete a purchase independently; check the permissions and confirmation steps of the particular service you use.
Shopping through generative AI is drawing more attention, but traffic is not the same as autonomous buying. Adobe Digital Insights reported that traffic from generative-AI sources to U.S. retail websites was up 4,700% year over year in July 2025, based on transaction data covering more than one trillion visits to U.S. retail sites. That figure measures visits attributed to those sources, not purchases made autonomously by agents. Adobe also reported that 38% of surveyed U.S. consumers had used generative AI for online shopping and 52% planned to do so that year; those are survey findings, not a count of completed agent purchases.

Where agent-payment protocols fit
Visa’s 2025 Trusted Agent Protocol announcement describes a way to communicate agent intent, consumer-recognition information, and optional payment information in commerce transactions. That kind of infrastructure may help merchants and agents communicate, but it does not replace checking the item or approving the specific order, and Visa’s announcement does not promise to prevent wrong-item purchases.
