Yes—you can use Navidrome to stream your own digital music collection through a browser or compatible app, much like using a personal music service. You provide the files and run the server, either on hardware you control or through a supported managed-hosting provider. Navidrome does not provide Spotify’s licensed catalog or music rights.
What Navidrome does—and what “like Spotify” means
Navidrome is open-source server software that indexes audio files in a music library you provide, then makes them available to a web browser or compatible player. The Navidrome project describes it as “a personal Spotify”; that refers to the convenience of streaming and browsing your own collection, not access to a subscription catalog. Once configured, the server can support multiple users, playlists, sharing links, scrobbling, and jukebox mode. It can also transcode audio on the fly for compatible clients. What you need to get started
- A music library: audio files on storage the server can read. Accurate tags help Navidrome organize artists, albums, and tracks.
- A host: a compatible computer or server running Linux, Windows, or macOS, a Docker host, or a supported Raspberry Pi/ARM setup. A dedicated Raspberry Pi is optional, not a requirement.
- ffmpeg: the installation documentation lists it as a requirement for Navidrome to work properly. Follow the platform-specific instructions for your installation. Installation guide
- Storage and permissions: the Navidrome process must be able to read the music library and write to its data directory.
- A way to connect: use the web interface on a reachable network or configure access for compatible clients on the devices where you listen.
Navidrome documents low-resource hardware support, including Raspberry Pi binaries and ARM container images, but the documentation cited here does not establish a recommended hardware model or comparative performance benchmarks. Choose based on the host you already have, library size, storage, desired uptime, and your comfort maintaining a server.

Install and connect to your library
The exact installation steps depend on your platform. The official first-run guide describes this general sequence; its current example uses port 4533 as the default:
- Install Navidrome and ffmpeg using the instructions for your operating system or container setup.
- Set the music and data locations. Point Navidrome to the folder containing your audio files and choose a persistent data directory.
- Check permissions. The server needs read access to music and read/write access to its data directory.
- Make the service reachable from the device you will use, then open the web interface at the configured address and port.
- Create the administrator account when prompted and allow the initial library scan to run.
- Play a track in the web interface to confirm that the library is available.
The getting-started guide includes scan-time estimates, but these are estimates rather than a performance guarantee; scan duration depends on the library and host.

If you use Docker
The official Docker example mounts the host music directory at /music and persistent application data at /data. Configure a container user ID with permission to read the music mount and write the data mount. Host paths, ownership IDs, and environment settings vary, so adapt the example to your system rather than treating it as a universal copy-and-paste configuration. Listen from a browser, phone, or computer
You can play music in Navidrome’s web interface or connect a third-party player that supports the Subsonic/OpenSubsonic API. The official app directory lists compatible options across mobile, desktop, and web platforms. Navidrome apps directory

Compatibility provides a way for a player to communicate with the server; it does not mean every app has the same features. Interface, offline caching, car integration, availability, and any app price depend on the individual client. Check the current app listing and the client’s own details before choosing one.
How Navidrome organizes a collection
Navidrome reads metadata tags to organize the library. Its folder-style browsing view is simulated from those tags rather than being a direct view of the filesystem; for example, it can present a hierarchy based on Album Artist, Album, and track. If your files have missing or inconsistent tags, browsing may be less useful until you clean up the metadata. Navidrome overview

The documented feature set also includes playlists, including .m3u import and synchronization; separate user accounts and activity; multiple libraries with user-specific access; sharing; scrobbling to Last.fm and ListenBrainz; and jukebox mode. If you self-host, an existing compatible computer may be enough; a dedicated low-resource device such as a Raspberry Pi is another option if you want a compact, always-on host. Docker is a deployment route, not a requirement. Navidrome documents these platforms but does not provide comparative benchmarks or a universal hardware recommendation.
Plan access and security before listening away from home
A server available only on your local network will not automatically be reachable when your phone is elsewhere. Remote listening requires a network configuration that exposes the service safely, or a managed host that provides suitable access. The Navidrome security guidance recommends not running the process as root and advises considering a reverse proxy with SSL when making the service network-accessible. Navidrome security guidance
File permissions matter too: grant the service only the access it needs to read the music and write its data. The security guidance also discusses trust boundaries for external authentication; avoid copying a reverse-proxy or authentication setup without following its endpoint and trusted-source requirements. Managed hosting can reduce some server-administration work, but check the provider’s terms to understand its security, backup, and access responsibilities.
