To check your installed watchOS version, open Settings > General > About on the Apple Watch and look for Software Version. To update, open General > Software Update on the watch or in the Apple Watch app on its paired iPhone. Keep the watch on its charger throughout installation.
Check the installed watchOS version
You can find the version on either the watch or its paired iPhone. Apple’s Apple Watch User Guide also notes that the About screen shows device details such as the model name and model number.

- On iPhone: Open the Apple Watch app and go to My Watch > General > About.
To check whether an update is available for that watch, open General > Software Update in the Apple Watch app or on the watch itself. If the watch cannot run the newest watchOS release, Apple says this screen shows the newest version that model can use.

- Update the paired iPhone to the latest iOS version it supports, connect it to Wi-Fi, and keep it near the watch.
- Make sure the watch battery is at least 50 percent charged.
- Keep the watch on its charger during installation. Apple estimates an update may take several minutes to an hour; actual time can vary.

Update from the paired iPhone
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch > General > Software Update.
- Download and install the update if one is offered. Enter the watch passcode if prompted.
- Keep the watch on its charger and the iPhone nearby. Do not restart either device or close the Apple Watch app while the update is installing. The watch restarts automatically when it finishes.
Update directly on Apple Watch
This method is available on watches running watchOS 6 or later. Connect the watch to Wi-Fi, then follow these steps:
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Tap Install if an update is available and follow the onscreen instructions.
- Leave the watch on its charger and do not restart it during installation. It restarts automatically when the update completes.
Check whether your Apple Watch is compatible
Compatibility depends on the exact watch model, and some releases also require a particular iPhone model and iOS version. Apple’s support article reviewed on October 7, 2026 lists watchOS 27 for Apple Watch SE 3, Series 9 and later, and Ultra 2 and later. For that update, Apple specifies an iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later, running iOS 27. Not every watchOS 27 feature is available on every compatible watch.

Older models have lower maximum versions. Apple’s Apple Watch and iPhone compatibility table lists Series 5 and Series 4 through watchOS 10.6.1, Series 3 through watchOS 8.8.1, Series 2 and Series 1 through watchOS 6.3, and the first-generation Apple Watch through watchOS 4.3.2. Those are listed compatibility limits, not a guarantee that every intermediate release remains available to install. For your watch’s current options, use General > Software Update.

Troubleshoot an update that will not install
If the update will not start
- Check that the watch is properly connected to its charger.
- Restart the watch and paired iPhone, then try again.
- If a downloaded update file is preventing another attempt, open the Apple Watch app on iPhone and go to General > Storage. Delete the update file and retry.
If you see “Unable to Verify Update”
Apple recommends checking that the watch has an internet connection through the paired iPhone, Wi-Fi, or cellular where available, then restarting the watch and trying again. If storage is low, remove synced music or photos, followed by apps if needed. See Apple’s Unable to Verify Update guidance.

Unpairing and setting up the watch again is a later troubleshooting step if those measures fail, not the first fix to try. Apple says the iPhone creates a fresh backup before erasing the watch during that process.
If the iPhone says the watch software is out of date
Some iOS updates require a corresponding watchOS update for the devices to keep syncing data, including Activity data. Check for an available watchOS update in the Apple Watch app and install it if your model supports it.
