Choose the anime if you would rather experience the story through voice performances, music, color, and animated action. The two formats are not identical beat for beat: the anime adapts the manga and includes anime-original material.
What is the difference between the Naruto manga and anime?
Naruto began as Kishimoto’s manga, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump. The manga finished in 2014 at 700 chapters; the anime adaptation began broadcasting in 2002. The official Naruto site identifies Kishimoto as the manga’s creator and gives those series milestones.

The manga is the original version of the story, presented in pages and panels. The anime adapts that story into moving images with voices and sound, and also contains anime-original material and rearrangements. Kishimoto has described animation and manga as different production processes, noting that animators must consider lenses and angles as well as the amount of material to draw. That makes the anime a distinct presentation, not simply the manga read aloud.

How do story, pacing, and presentation compare?
| What matters | Manga | Anime |
|---|---|---|
| Story baseline | Kishimoto’s original manga story, complete in 700 chapters. | An adaptation that includes anime-original material and may rearrange or extend story material. |
| Pace | You control how quickly to move through panels and chapters. | Scenes unfold at the pace of the episode, with performances, music, and action in motion. |
| Sound and visuals | Static, black-and-white pages in the original manga format. | Color, animation, voice performances, and music. |
| English “Believe it!” line | Not present in the English manga, according to VIZ Media’s English-edition editor-in-chief. | Used in the English dub as a translation choice, rather than appearing in the manga. |
| Skipping anime-original episodes | Not applicable: the manga has no anime episodes to skip. | Episode guides can help identify material classified as filler, but that label is a guide’s editorial classification, not an official canon ruling. |
The localization example is confirmed by an official Naruto interview with VIZ Media. Alexis Kirsch, VIZ’s editor-in-chief of the English version of Weekly Shonen Jump, said “Believe it!” is used in the anime translation but does not appear in the manga. The anime’s English dub can therefore differ from the English manga even in a familiar catchphrase.

Which version should you choose?
Choose the manga for the most direct original-story route
Read chapter 1 through chapter 700 if you want Kishimoto’s original work without anime-only additions. This is also the more flexible format for controlling your pace: you can pause, reread a panel, or move directly to the next chapter without episode runtimes.
Choose the anime for performance and motion
Start with the anime if voice acting, music, color, and animated fights are central to what you enjoy. The production format brings staging and movement to the story, while its adaptation choices mean it should not be treated as a scene-for-scene duplicate of the manga.
Rank #2
Choose based on how you feel about anime-original material
If you want the main manga storyline but prefer watching, use a current episode guide to navigate episodes it classifies as filler. One secondary guide notes that such episodes can still add character material even when they do not advance the main plot. The guide is useful for navigation, but its filler labels should not be mistaken for an official franchise decision about canon. The Naruto episode guide is one such secondary reference.
Where should you start?
If you are reading
- Begin with Naruto chapter 1.
- Continue through chapter 700 for the complete original manga story.
If you are watching
- Begin with Naruto episode 1.
- Continue with Naruto Shippuden after the original Naruto series.
- If you want to avoid anime-original material, consult an episode guide and treat its filler designations as editorial guidance rather than official canon rulings.
What is established about the English manga edition?
VIZ Media is identified in the official localization interview as the American publisher responsible for translating and publishing the English edition. The official Naruto site also reports more than 250 million print copies sold globally; the page does not state the date for that figure. These facts establish the series’ scale and English-edition context, but they do not determine which format will suit an individual reader better.
