Fix an Approach S72 by identifying which connection is failing: satellite reception, nearby-course/map data, map authentication, or phone pairing. Start with the GPS checks for “Locating Satellites”; course-map errors need a different remedy, and the detailed Bluetooth steps available for Garmin’s neighboring S70 model should be treated as guidance rather than confirmed S72 menu instructions.
First identify the problem
Garmin’s error wording can help separate the fault. “Locating Satellites” points to GPS acquisition. “No Courses Near” or “No Nearby Courses” can mean GPS has not connected or course maps need updating. “Can’t Unlock Maps” and “Can’t Authenticate Maps” point to course-map validation or file problems. Phone pairing is a separate Bluetooth issue.

- GPS: Start with a clear view of the sky, then update and sync.
- Course availability: Confirm GPS works, then update or reinstall course maps.
- Map authentication: Update or reinstall the maps and safely eject the watch after a computer transfer.
- Phone connection: Try the adjacent-model pairing checklist below, while checking the S72 manual for its own menu names.
Fix “Locating Satellites”
Garmin’s general Approach guidance recommends giving the watch an unobstructed view of the sky. Move away from buildings, patio covers, and dense foliage; GPS acquisition may take longer in a new location. Garmin does not establish a specific S72 wait time in the material available here. Garmin’s satellite-acquisition guidance describes these general checks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Move outdoors. Place the watch where it has a clear sky view, away from nearby obstructions.
- Update and sync. Check for current device software, then sync using Garmin Express or Garmin Golf. Syncing refreshes predictive orbit data, which Garmin says helps the watch predict satellite positions and reduce acquisition time.
- Restart the watch. Retry satellite acquisition after restarting.
- Consider a factory reset only last. Garmin warns that a reset returns settings to factory defaults and deletes user data. Sync first, and consult the S72 manual for the correct S72 reset procedure; do not assume another model’s button combination or menu path applies.
Garmin’s general guidance supports the reception, sync, restart, and reset checks, but it does not establish an S72-specific wait duration, CPE/EPO status path, or reset sequence.

- Gain a better understanding of your swing during your range session and after your round with swing metrics, which include hand speed, backswing length, wrist rotation and more
Fix “No Courses Near” or “No Nearby Courses”
Garmin identifies two common causes: GPS is not connected, or the course maps need updating or reinstalling. First resolve any satellite-acquisition problem using the steps above. If GPS is working but the course still is not available, update or reinstall the course maps using Garmin’s supported update tools. Garmin’s guidance for “No Courses Near” covers this distinction.
The exact S72 map-manager controls and regional reinstall workflow are not established here. Garmin’s surfaced Map Manager instructions are for the S70, so do not assume its menu labels or button sequence match the S72.

Fix “Can’t Unlock Maps” or “Can’t Authenticate Maps”
Garmin treats these messages as map-validation problems. Damaged map data or missing or incorrect map-unlock information can trigger them. Use Garmin Express to update or reinstall the course maps. Garmin’s map-authentication guidance explains these causes and remedies.
If you update maps through a computer, safely eject the watch before unplugging it. Garmin notes that an update can appear complete while write caching is still transferring map data; disconnecting before the transfer is fully written can leave the map incomplete.

Fix phone pairing or Bluetooth connection problems
The S72 manual confirms Bluetooth support for wireless sensors, but the phone-pairing troubleshooting steps retrieved are for the Approach S70, not the S72. Use the following as a practical checklist, not as confirmed S72-specific menu directions; verify the current S72 procedure in its manual. The S70 guidance recommends pairing through Garmin Golf rather than starting in the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Garmin’s S70 pairing guidance is the source for this adjacent-model checklist.
- Restart both the watch and phone, and confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the phone.
- Update Garmin Golf and check for watch software updates.
- If the watch was paired before, remove it from Garmin Golf and the phone’s Bluetooth settings. If you have changed phones, remove the old pairing from the previous phone as well.
- Keep the phone within 10 m (33 ft), the distance Garmin specifies in the S70 pairing guidance.
- Retry pairing through Garmin Golf, putting the watch into pairing mode using the S72 manual’s instructions rather than assuming S70 menu names apply.
Do not use rangefinder-specific advice such as removing a battery or waking a rangefinder: those instructions do not apply to the S72 watch.

- New round watch design with a high-resolution sunlight-readable display
- Battery life: up to 30 hours in GPS Mode

When to stop troubleshooting
If GPS still cannot acquire satellites after an open-sky test, current software, a sync, and a restart, or if course maps continue to fail after an update or reinstall, contact Garmin Support with the exact on-screen message and the checks you tried. For persistent pairing trouble, specify that the device is an S72 and ask for the current model-specific pairing steps rather than following an S70 path by assumption.
