NanoClaw separates an agent group—the agent’s workspace and configuration—from a messaging group—a chat or channel on a platform. A wiring connects them. Its ncl command-line interface manages these resources and other system records, but it is not a billing console: NanoClaw’s documentation does not establish a universal subscription or model-usage bill.
How NanoClaw represents groups
NanoClaw is self-hosted software that routes messages through users, messaging groups, agent groups, and sessions, with agents running in local containers. Its current documentation uses separate records for agent groups and messaging groups, rather than treating “group” as one interchangeable object. NanoClaw project README

| Entity | What it represents | How it relates to the others |
|---|---|---|
| Agent group | An agent’s workspace, personality, and container configuration. | Can be linked to a messaging group through a wiring. |
| Messaging group | A chat or channel on a messaging platform. | Connects to an agent group through a wiring. |
| Wiring | The connection between a messaging group and an agent group, including session behavior and triggers. | Determines how messages from the channel reach the agent group. |
How to create and connect a NanoClaw group
Creating an agent group does not necessarily make it reachable from a messaging channel. NanoClaw’s template guide says that after stamping a group from a template, you must connect it separately through channel management or by creating a wiring with ncl. NanoClaw template guide

- Inspect existing agent groups: run
ncl groups list. To inspect one record, runncl groups get <group-id>. - Create or stamp an agent group: use the project’s group or template workflow. Check the installed version’s help for the exact creation syntax.
- Identify the messaging group: use the documented
messaging-groupsresource to inspect the chat or channel record. - Connect the records: use channel management or the
ncl wirings createcommand with the required values for your installation. Runncl wirings listto inspect existing connections. - Verify configuration and access: inspect the group and wiring, and confirm that the relevant CLI scope permits any actions you intend an agent to perform.
Because command flags can vary with the installed version and operation, use ncl help or resource-level help before creating or changing records.

What the ncl CLI can do
The project describes ncl as an interface for querying and modifying NanoClaw’s central database. Its general command shape is ncl <resource> <verb> [<id>] [--flags]. Documented resources include groups, messaging groups, wirings, users, roles, members, destinations, sessions, scheduled tasks, approvals, and dropped messages. NanoClaw CLI documentation
Group operations include listing, getting, creating, updating, deleting, and restarting groups, as well as reading or updating supported configuration. Examples from the documented interface include:

The host-side CLI communicates through a Unix socket; an in-container CLI uses a session-database transport. The current documentation also describes cli_scope values: disabled prevents CLI access, group (the default) limits supported resources to the calling group, and global permits broader access. Owner agent groups receive global scope by default. These scopes matter when an agent is expected to run administrative actions; the command existing does not mean every agent can invoke it across the installation. NanoClaw’s 2.4.0 release notes, published by the project in 2026, describe install-wide and per-group model and speed controls. They say the default Claude model moved to Opus 5.5, affecting cost and usage-limit burn; the release also says API-key installs moved from Opus 5 and Pro and Team Standard installs from Sonnet. These are release-specific statements, not a guarantee of the default in every later version or account. Check current project documentation and your installed configuration before changing or updating. NanoClaw changelog

For a single agent group, the release documents a model setting using ncl groups config update --id <group-id> --model <model>. To set a default across the installation, it names NANOCLAW_DEFAULT_MODEL. The release advises users who want to retain a model to set the environment variable or configure the group before updating.
For providers that declare a serving tier, the release documents NANOCLAW_FAST_MODE=1 as an install-wide option and ncl groups config update --id <group-id> --speed fast as a per-group option. It specifically states that Claude fast mode costs more per token. A serving-speed option is therefore a cost choice as well as a performance setting; the cited release does not provide a complete price table. NanoClaw 2.4.0 release notes

Does NanoClaw charge for usage?
The NanoClaw README states, “NanoClaw has no user accounts.” It describes an optional community portal account for particular perks, including a hardened image and managed Slack app. That account/perk arrangement is distinct from charges for inference by a model provider. The README does not establish a universal NanoClaw subscription or a fixed bill for model calls. NanoClaw project README
Inference cost depends on the provider, model, and serving option used. The project’s 2.4.0 release notes flag that model changes can affect cost and usage-limit burn, and that Claude fast mode costs more per token. They do not state what a particular user will be charged. For an account-specific amount, consult the provider’s current billing information and the configuration actually in use; no provider rate or universal NanoClaw bill is established in the cited project materials.

Using local Ollama inference
NanoClaw’s official Ollama guide explains that routing inference to a local Ollama endpoint can make API inference costs zero and keep inference on the user’s hardware. This avoids provider API charges for that local inference path, but it does not mean compute is cost-free: the user supplies and operates the hardware, with associated setup and electricity costs. The guide does not provide a like-for-like price comparison with hosted providers. NanoClaw local Ollama guide
What you need to run NanoClaw
The project README lists macOS or Linux as supported host environments, with Windows through WSL2, and requires Node.js 22+, pnpm 10+, and Docker. These are the README’s stated requirements; check the current installation documentation for changes before setup. NanoClaw project README
The README’s privacy statement is: “Your agents, messages, files and keys never leave your machine.” Attribute that claim to the project’s README and note its qualification: the host maintains an outbound portal connection for users who opt in to portal perks. NanoClaw project README
