Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose a Naim Uniti all-in-one if you want streaming, a DAC and an amplifier in one compact, app-controlled chassis. Choose separates if you expect to upgrade individual stages, need unusual sources, want to mix brands or require more amplifier power than the Uniti range provides. The right answer depends less on a universal sound-quality ranking than on your speakers, room, source collection, space and willingness to manage several components.
What you are choosing
A Naim Uniti Atom, Uniti Star or Uniti Nova combines three jobs that would normally be separate: network streaming, digital-to-analogue conversion and power amplification. You add passive speakers and connect your sources, then control music through the Uniti platform. Naim’s compatibility guidance lists Ethernet and Wi‑Fi, Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz, Apple AirPlay 2, Google Chromecast, UPnP and internet radio for all three models. Uniti products can also synchronize playback in a multiroom system.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
A separates system divides those jobs among a streamer, DAC, preamplifier and power amplifier. That increases the number of boxes, cables and configuration decisions, but it lets you replace one stage without replacing the others. You can also choose a specialist phono stage, CD transport, analogue preamp or a power amplifier sized for a demanding room and speaker load.
Neither architecture is automatically better. An all-in-one prioritizes simplicity, predictable integration and a small footprint. Separates prioritize choice, power and a longer upgrade path.

What every Uniti model includes
Streaming and network playback
Atom, Star and Nova are all-in-one products with integrated network playback and DACs. They can join a home network over Ethernet or Wi‑Fi and access the services and protocols listed in Naim’s current compatibility guidance: Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz, Apple AirPlay 2, Google Chromecast, UPnP and internet radio. Uniti units can be synchronized for multiroom playback, so you can send the same program to compatible Uniti rooms.
The exact number and type of physical inputs varies by model. If you intend to connect a television through HDMI ARC, an optical or coaxial digital source, an analogue source, a USB library or several devices at once, check the current compatibility table for the model you are buying rather than assuming every Uniti has the same socket complement.
Integrated DAC and amplification
The DAC is built into each Atom, Star and Nova, so a separate digital-to-analogue converter is not required. Amplification is also built in. Naim’s January 2026 price list records the following stereo output ratings:
| Model | Published output | January 2026 listed price | Distinctive point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uniti Atom | 2 × 40 W | €2,599 | Smallest, lowest-output Uniti option |
| Uniti Star | 2 × 70 W | €3,999 | Original model provides CD playback and ripping |
| Uniti Nova | 2 × 80 W | €4,999 | More amplifier headroom than Atom |
| Uniti Nova PE | 2 × 150 W | €9,999 | Premium, highest-output model in the listed range |
The figures and euro prices come from a January 2026 Latham Audio/Naim list. They are time- and region-sensitive product listings, not a guarantee of today’s dealer price. Speakers are not included.
Speaker requirements
Naim’s guidance specifies a minimum speaker impedance of 4 ohms for Atom, Star and Nova. It also gives recommended minimum sensitivities: at least 88 dB for Atom, 86 dB for Star and 85 dB for Nova. Sensitivity describes how much acoustic output a speaker can produce from a given amplifier input; a higher-sensitivity design generally places less demand on amplifier power.

These recommendations do not reduce speaker matching to a single number. Room size, listening distance, music level and the speaker’s impedance curve all matter. A speaker advertised as 4 ohms can still present a difficult load if its impedance falls sharply or its phase angle is demanding. Ask the dealer or manufacturer for the full impedance behaviour when pairing a lower-powered Atom with a large room or insensitive floorstander.
Choosing among Atom, Star, Nova and Nova PE
Uniti Atom: compact system for efficient speakers
Atom is the logical starting point when physical space is limited, you want one serious component and your speakers are reasonably efficient. Its published 2 × 40 W output is the lowest in the group, so the 88 dB recommended sensitivity is especially important. In a small or medium room with speakers that meet that guidance, Atom can avoid the rack, cable loom and matching work associated with separates.
Choose Atom when your priority is a compact streaming system rather than an extensive collection of physical sources. Before ordering, verify that its available inputs cover every device you plan to retain. If you later move to a larger room or harder-to-drive speakers, the amplifier section—not the streaming platform—may become the limiting factor, and changing that stage means changing the unit.
Uniti Star: the CD and ripping specialist
The original Uniti Star is the model to choose when disc playback and archiving are central to your routine. Naim says it can play CDs and rip them to an external USB drive in WAV or FLAC. That gives you both immediate disc listening and a file-based library without adding a separate transport and computer workflow.
Its listed output is 2 × 70 W and Naim’s recommended speaker sensitivity is at least 86 dB. Confirm availability before paying a deposit: a current What Hi‑Fi report describes the original Star as discontinued because of CD-drive supply problems. Product stock can therefore differ by country and dealer.

Uniti Nova: more headroom in one chassis
Nova raises the listed output to 2 × 80 W and has a recommended minimum speaker sensitivity of 85 dB. That makes it the safer all-in-one choice for a larger room, longer listening distance or speakers that need more reserve than Atom can comfortably provide. It retains the same integrated streaming and DAC concept, so the trade-off is primarily price, size and output rather than a change to the basic operating model.

The January 2026 list places Nova PE at 2 × 150 W and €9,999. It is the high-output premium member of this comparison. It can make sense when you want substantial amplifier capability without dividing the system into several boxes, but its price brings it close to serious separates territory. Compare the cost of the Nova PE with the independent upgrade and source choices you would gain from a streamer, preamp and power amplifier before deciding.
Uniti Star Lite: a different product from the original Star
What Hi‑Fi reports that Star Lite launched in the UK and Europe at £3,199 / €3,999 with 70 W per channel. It retains AirPlay 2, Google Cast, TIDAL, Qobuz, Spotify Connect and UPnP, but removes the integrated CD player and ripper. In practical terms, Star Lite is the streaming-focused successor described in that report, not a like-for-like replacement for a buyer who needs disc handling.
Availability and naming are volatile. Check the specification printed on the unit or the current regional listing: do not assume that a product called Star includes the optical drive unless the seller explicitly confirms it.
When separates are the better system
You want staged upgrades
With separates, you can improve one stage at a time. A network streamer can be replaced while the amplifier remains; a power amplifier can be changed when you buy harder-to-drive speakers; a DAC can be updated without discarding the preamp. This is useful if you expect your system to evolve over years and want each purchase to remain usable during the next change.

You need specialist sources
A separate system is easier to configure around a turntable, dedicated phono stage, CD transport, professional digital source or several analogue components. The Uniti models cover network services and digital playback strongly, while the available physical inputs differ by model. If your source list is unusual or likely to grow, count sockets and signal types before choosing an integrated box.
Your speakers or room demand more power
Separates let you select an amplifier for the actual electrical load and listening distance. That can be decisive for low-sensitivity speakers, large rooms, high playback levels or music with substantial bass energy. The Nova PE’s 2 × 150 W shows how far an all-in-one can go, but a separate power amplifier still gives you a wider field of choices and the option to change amplification independently.
You want to mix manufacturers
Separates do not require every stage to come from one brand. You can choose a streamer for its software, a DAC for its conversion features, a preamp for its analogue connectivity and a power amplifier for its current delivery. Mixing brands requires more attention to gain, connector types, balanced versus unbalanced wiring and system matching, but it can fit a specific set of priorities better than a single ecosystem.
What separates cost in practice
A separate system’s price is the sum of its chosen stages, not a single published package. The January 2026 Naim/Latham list gives these examples from the separates ecosystem:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Component | January 2026 listed price | Role |
|---|---|---|
| NSS 333 | €9,499 | Streamer/DAC |
| NSC 222 | €6,999 | Streaming preamplifier |
| NAP 250 | €6,999 | Power amplifier |
Those are individual component prices, not the total for a functioning system. They exclude speakers and may require optional power supplies or additional accessories. A complete separates budget also needs interconnects, speaker cable, a rack or shelves and any source-specific hardware such as a phono stage or CD transport. The value of separates is not that they are always cheaper; it is the ability to choose the level and timing of each purchase.

Source and connectivity checklist
Before selecting a model, write down every source you use now and every source you expect to add. Group them by function:
- Network services: Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz, AirPlay 2, Google Chromecast, UPnP and internet radio are supported across Atom, Star and Nova.
- Disc collection: the original Star is the Uniti option with built-in CD playback and ripping to an external USB drive in WAV or FLAC; Star Lite omits that drive.
- Television and digital devices: verify whether the chosen model has the required HDMI ARC, optical or coaxial input and whether the number of inputs is sufficient.
- Local files and USB: confirm the supported USB and library workflow for your model if you keep music on a drive rather than a streaming service.
- Analogue sources: check the analogue input type and whether a turntable will need a separate phono stage.
For separates, perform the same inventory before buying the first box. A preamplifier with too few inputs can force an expensive replacement later; a streamer without the digital output your DAC expects can require another interface.
Buying and setup procedure
Steps for a Uniti all-in-one
- Confirm electrical compatibility. Check your speakers’ nominal impedance and sensitivity against Naim’s 4-ohm minimum and the model guidance: 88 dB for Atom, 86 dB for Star or 85 dB for Nova.
- Choose the correct source model. Select the original Star only if the seller confirms the CD drive and ripping functions. Select Star Lite only when streaming is sufficient.
- Check the input list. Match your television, disc player, computer, analogue source and USB library to the exact model’s current input specification.
- Plan placement. Reserve ventilation space and a stable shelf for the Uniti unit, then place speakers symmetrically at the listening position. Keep network equipment close enough for reliable Ethernet if Wi‑Fi is inconsistent.
- Connect speakers carefully. Power the unit down, observe polarity and make sure no stray strands can short the terminals.
- Join the network and update. Use Ethernet or Wi‑Fi, complete the product’s setup process and install any offered firmware update before troubleshooting playback.
- Add services and sources one at a time. Test local network playback, then each streaming service and physical input separately. This makes it clear whether a problem is caused by the network, account authorization or cabling.
- Set a realistic listening level. If the amplifier clips, sounds strained or loses bass control at your normal level, lower the volume and reassess speaker matching rather than assuming a software fault.
Steps for a separates system
- Define the signal chain. Decide whether the system will be streamer to DAC to preamp to power amp, or whether one component combines two of those functions.
- Match interfaces. Confirm digital output and input formats, analogue connector types, gain structure and whether balanced or unbalanced cables are required.
- Size the amplifier. Use the speaker’s sensitivity, impedance behaviour, room volume and listening distance to select power; do not choose solely by a wattage number.
- Allocate rack space. Leave ventilation around every chassis and keep signal cables separated from mains cables where practical.
- Connect with power off. Wire sources to the preamp, the preamp to the power amp and the power amp to speakers before switching on.
- Test each stage. Confirm the streamer reaches the network, the DAC locks to the selected signal, the preamp changes inputs and the power amp produces both channels without hum.
- Label cables and inputs. Clear labels make later upgrades and fault finding much easier.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Assuming watts alone predict suitability
Output ratings provide a useful comparison—Atom’s 2 × 40 W, Star’s 2 × 70 W, Nova’s 2 × 80 W and Nova PE’s 2 × 150 W—but they do not describe every speaker interaction. Sensitivity, impedance dips, room size and listening distance can matter as much as the headline number. Use the published sensitivity guidance as a first filter, then confirm the speaker’s full electrical behaviour.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Buying a Star without checking the drive
The original Star’s CD and ripping capability is its defining distinction. Star Lite removes that hardware. Because the original model’s availability is changing, read the exact model designation and written specification on the sales listing before purchase.
Forgetting that speakers are extra
The listed Uniti prices cover the electronics unit. You still need passive speakers, stands or suitable furniture, speaker cable and any required digital interconnects. Include those items when comparing the cost with a separates system.
Overlooking regional pricing and stock
The euro figures in this article are from a January 2026 list, while Star Lite’s reported £3,199 / €3,999 launch pricing applies to the UK and Europe. Taxes, dealer discounts, currency movements and regional stock can change the amount you actually pay.
Expecting Uniti Core to replace a DAC
Uniti Core is a music server without an integrated DAC. It needs a DAC-equipped downstream device, such as a Uniti player or a separate DAC and amplifier chain. It is therefore a library-storage component, not an all-in-one playback system like Atom, Star or Nova.
Decision guide by buyer type
Choose Atom when
- Your room is small or medium and your speakers meet the 88 dB guidance.
- You want the fewest boxes and a compact installation.
- Your listening is primarily network streaming and digital playback.
- You accept that a future amplifier upgrade would mean replacing the Uniti unit.
Choose the original Star when
- You regularly play CDs and want the unit to rip them to an external USB drive in WAV or FLAC.
- Your speakers suit 70 W per channel and at least 86 dB sensitivity.
- You have confirmed current stock and the presence of the optical drive.
Choose Nova when
- You need more amplifier headroom than Atom provides but still want one chassis.
- Your room or speakers make the 2 × 80 W rating and 85 dB guidance a better fit.
- You prefer integrated streaming and DAC functions over a multi-box upgrade path.
Consider Nova PE when
- You want 2 × 150 W in a single premium unit.
- You value a clean installation and do not need to change the amplifier independently.
- You have compared its €9,999 January 2026 listing with the cost and flexibility of separates.
Choose separates when
- You plan to upgrade in stages rather than replace an entire system.
- You need a specialist phono stage, CD transport, analogue preamp or multiple future sources.
- Your speakers or room demand an amplifier selected independently of the streamer and DAC.
- You are comfortable budgeting for several chassis, interconnects, rack space and setup work.
Final verdict
For most buyers deciding between convenience and flexibility, the choice is straightforward: a Uniti all-in-one is the better fit when compactness, integrated streaming and simple operation matter most; separates are the better fit when system growth, source variety and independent amplifier choice matter more. Within the Uniti line, Atom suits efficient-speaker compact systems, the original Star is for CD playback and ripping, Nova adds headroom, and Nova PE delivers the most listed power. Verify speaker matching, inputs, regional stock and current pricing before ordering, because those practical details determine whether the elegant one-box solution remains satisfying in your room.
