n8n vs Make: Which Automation Platform Should You Choose?

n8n offers code-level flexibility and self-hosting options; Make focuses on managed visual scenarios. Compare their different billing units and test your real workflow before choosing.

Choose Make if you want a managed, visual-first automation builder; choose n8n if your team can handle more technical workflow design and values code-level customization or the option to self-host. Neither is universally cheaper or easier: n8n bills by workflow executions, while Make counts module actions as credits, so the right choice depends on how your actual automation runs.

How n8n and Make differ

Both platforms connect apps and automate multi-step workflows, but their product approaches differ. n8n presents itself as a low-code platform with code steps and deployment options. Make emphasizes a visual, no-code scenario canvas built from modules. Those descriptions come from the vendors, not independent usability tests; try your hardest workflow in each before deciding which feels easier for your team.

Decision area n8n Make
Workflow design Low-code builder with code steps and customization, according to n8n. Visual scenario canvas assembled from modules, according to Make.
Billing unit Monthly workflow executions; the pricing page says plans are based on executions regardless of complexity. Credits, with each module action counting as one credit under the pricing page’s stated rule.
Deployment Hosted plans and a self-hosted Community Edition; some paid tiers are self-hosted or offer a choice. Cloud service; Make describes an Enterprise on-premises agent for data access, while scenarios still run in the cloud.
Custom logic Comparison page describes JavaScript and Python steps, HTTP/GraphQL requests, webhooks, and custom nodes. Comparison page describes visual modules and custom functions as an Enterprise feature.

How pricing compares

The plans are not directly price-comparable: n8n counts complete workflow executions, while Make counts module-action credits. A short automation with many module actions can consume credits differently from a workflow that starts often but has few steps. Estimate both units using the same representative workflow rather than assuming one billing model is inherently cheaper.

Which is easier for no-code automation?

Make is the more natural first trial if your priority is assembling workflows visually without writing code. Its scenarios use modules on a visual canvas, and its Free plan lists routers and filters. That does not guarantee it will be easier for every user: connector behavior, branching, data transformations, and debugging can determine how much work a real scenario takes.

n8n may suit teams comfortable with low-code tools and technical customization. Its comparison page describes JavaScript or Python steps, API requests, webhooks, and custom nodes. Treat these as vendor-described capabilities, and verify the precise feature and plan availability in current documentation before relying on them.

Can you self-host n8n or Make?

n8n offers hosted plans as well as a self-hosted Community Edition. Its pricing page lists Business as self-hosted only and Enterprise as available hosted or self-hosted. n8n’s comparison says the Community Edition can be self-hosted without a license charge, including on a VPS or your own server. No license charge does not mean no operating cost: your team must provide infrastructure and manage upgrades, security, backups, monitoring, availability, and incidents.

Make describes its service as cloud-only. Its comparison says Enterprise customers can use an on-premises agent for secure data access, but scenarios continue to run in the cloud. For regulated or sensitive workloads, confirm current regional hosting and data-handling arrangements with the vendor; an on-premises agent is not the same as running the whole automation platform locally.

Integrations, custom logic, and AI

n8n’s comparison page describes JavaScript and Python steps, HTTP and GraphQL requests, webhooks, custom nodes, and AI integrations, including connections to custom models. Make describes a large app-and-module library, visual scenarios, and custom functions on Enterprise; its pricing page also advertises AI-related features. These are vendor feature descriptions, not independently tested results, and availability can depend on plan or feature status.

Do not compare catalog marketing numbers as if they counted the same thing: vendors may define integrations, apps, and modules differently. Instead, confirm that the exact connector you need supports its required operations and authentication. For gaps, test the API, custom authentication, transformations, error handling, and the plan needed for any custom function or node.

Collaboration and controls to check

Before selecting a tier, map operational requirements to the current plan tables rather than relying on a headline feature list. n8n lists plan-dependent project counts, concurrency, insights, SSO/SAML/LDAP, and Git version control. Make lists Teams roles and templates and Enterprise security capabilities.

  • How many people need to build, review, or administer workflows?
  • Do you need separate environments, version control, or approval steps?
  • What concurrency, run duration, and execution-history retention does the workflow require?
  • Which single sign-on, directory, and security controls are mandatory?
  • Who owns incident response and platform maintenance if the deployment is self-hosted?

A practical way to choose

  1. Map one real automation. Record its trigger, branches, loops, data bundles, error paths, and expected monthly volume.
  2. Check the exact integrations. Confirm the required app operations and authentication; identify any API or custom-logic gaps.
  3. Estimate usage in each platform’s unit. Count monthly workflow starts for n8n and module actions for Make, including a busy month. Check current rules for credits, AI features, and plan limits.
  4. Decide who will operate it. If considering self-hosted n8n, assign responsibility for infrastructure, upgrades, backups, monitoring, security, and availability.
  5. Match controls to a tier. Compare required collaboration roles, environments, concurrency, history, and security controls against current plans.
  6. Prototype the hardest part. Build the branching or data-transformation step that is most likely to expose a mismatch before committing broadly.

Who should choose each platform?

Choose Make if

  • You want a managed, visual-first workflow environment.
  • Your team prefers assembling scenarios from modules over extending a workflow with code.
  • You are comfortable with cloud execution and have modeled how module actions translate into credits for your use case.

Choose n8n if

  • Your team values code-level flexibility, custom logic, or API-heavy workflows.
  • You want deployment options that include self-hosting and can take responsibility for operations.
  • Execution-based billing is a better fit after modeling your workflow’s starts and the relevant plan limits.

These recommendations reflect how the vendors position their products, not a measured finding that one is universally easier, cheaper, or more capable. Make’s own comparison is available at Make vs N8N in 2026; it is also vendor-authored.
