If Discord keeps disconnecting and reconnecting, first check Discord’s status page and determine whether the whole app is dropping or only voice chat. Voice failures often involve blocked or unstable UDP traffic, VPN or firewall interference, or voice-server routing; compare another network before making disruptive changes.
Work through the checks below in order, starting with a restart and network comparison. Save cache cleanup or reinstalling for later, especially if the problem occurs only in the desktop app.

Why Discord keeps disconnecting and reconnecting
Discord voice needs a usable connection to its voice servers, including UDP traffic. A connection that loads websites can still fail for voice if UDP is blocked or unstable. Discord identifies VPNs without UDP support, firewall or antivirus interference, restricted school or work networks, router or ISP problems, and voice-server routing as possible causes. Before you change anything
Check whether Discord is having an incident, then identify what is failing. A widespread outage cannot be fixed with local settings.

- Check Discord’s status page. If there is an incident, wait for service to recover and retest.
- Check whether text messaging works while voice fails, whether the issue affects one channel or all of Discord, and whether it happens on other devices.
- Compare the same call on another network, such as a phone’s cellular connection, and test Discord in a browser if possible.

“RTC Connecting,” “No Route,” and “Waiting for Voice Server” indicate trouble establishing or maintaining a voice connection, but none identifies one cause by itself. 8 Ways To Fix Discord Keeps Disconnecting & Reconnecting
Try these in order. Retest the same channel or call after each change so you can tell what helped.
1) Restart Discord, your device, and network equipment
- Fully quit Discord. On Windows, close it from the system tray and check that it is no longer running in Task Manager. On macOS, choose Discord > Quit Discord or press Command-Q.
- Restart your computer or phone.
- Power-cycle the modem and router, then wait for the internet connection to return before opening Discord.
- Test the same call again.
Restarting Discord can clear a stale client session; restarting network equipment can clear a router or NAT state. Neither fixes a Discord outage or a network policy that blocks voice. Discord recommends restarting the modem, router, and computer. (Source: Discord Voice Connection Errors.)

- Try the same voice channel on a phone using cellular data, or try another Wi-Fi network.
- If you are on a desktop, try Ethernet if available. You can also compare the desktop app with Discord in a browser.
- Compare another device on the same Wi-Fi network.
If cellular data works but home Wi-Fi does not, investigate the router, ISP, Wi-Fi, or network policy. If Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not, investigate wireless signal, interference, or roaming. If the browser works but the desktop client does not, focus on the app and its local security rules. A fast speed test does not rule out packet loss, latency spikes, or UDP filtering.
3) Test VPN, proxy, firewall, and antivirus interference
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN and test Discord. If voice starts working, the VPN route or configuration may be interfering.
- If you must use a VPN, check that it supports UDP for Discord voice. A browser VPN extension does not necessarily route the desktop Discord app through the VPN.
- Check for an unintended operating-system proxy. On a school, work, hotel, or public network, ask the administrator whether Discord is permitted rather than trying to bypass network controls.
- As a controlled diagnostic test, briefly disable a third-party firewall or antivirus feature only if safe to do so. If that resolves the issue, re-enable protection and add Discord to the product’s allowlist.
Do not leave security protection disabled or download unofficial “Discord firewall fixes,” cracked clients, or registry-cleaning tools. 4) Ask an administrator to test another voice region
If only a particular voice channel or server is affected, its administrator can test a different region. The administrator can open the voice channel settings, go to Overview, and select another available option under Region Override. Rejoin and retest.
A region change can help if the route to a particular voice server is the problem, but it will not repair weak Wi-Fi, a local firewall, or a VPN blocking UDP. - Open User Settings > Voice & Video.
- Check that the intended input and output devices are selected, and verify microphone permissions and input mode.
- Under Debugging, choose Reset Voice and Video Settings if that control is available in your client. Rejoin the call and test.
- Try both enabling and disabling Ensure Quality of Service High Packet Priority, testing after each change. Keep the setting that works better on your network.
QoS is an A/B test, not a universal fix: packet-priority handling can help on some networks and cause problems on others. If one headset or microphone triggers the issue, test another device. 6) Update Discord, your operating system, or browser
Update Discord through the official client or Discord’s download page, and install available operating-system updates. If you use Discord in a browser, update the browser and try another supported browser. Check the site’s microphone and camera permissions, restart the browser after changing them, and temporarily disable extensions that might filter scripts or connections.
If Discord works in a browser but not in the desktop app, that comparison points toward an app-specific problem; it does not prove that the network is otherwise free of issues. (Source: Discord Voice and Video Troubleshooting Guide.)

7) Clear the desktop cache
Try this later, particularly if the browser works and the desktop app remains stuck or behaves differently after an update. Quit Discord completely, then delete or rename only its cache folder and relaunch the app.
- Windows: %appdata%\discord\Cache
- macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/discord/Cache

8) Reinstall Discord if the app itself appears to be the problem
Reinstall only after the less disruptive checks, especially if Discord works in a browser on the same device, the app remains stuck after updates, or the installation appears corrupted. Uninstall the desktop app and install a fresh copy from Discord’s official download page. Avoid deleting unrelated folders or configuration unless current Discord support instructions tell you to.
If the app and browser both fail on the same network, reinstalling is unlikely to fix the underlying network path.
Extra troubleshooting when the fix does not work
Check Wi-Fi and ISP conditions
Move closer to the router or test Ethernet to distinguish Wi-Fi instability from a broader network problem. If Discord works on another network but not at home, contact your ISP or network administrator. Discord’s troubleshooting guide gives 300 kbps up and down as a voice troubleshooting bandwidth guideline, but meeting it does not guarantee a stable call: packet loss, jitter, latency spikes, and UDP filtering can still interrupt voice. For mobile app disconnections
If the problem happens when the app goes into the background or the phone switches between Wi-Fi and cellular, check the phone’s background-app, battery-optimization, and low-data settings. Compare Wi-Fi and cellular separately. Desktop cache steps do not apply to the mobile app.
Collect details before contacting support
If the issue persists, note your operating system, Discord platform, exact connection message, whether text works, whether another network works, and whether the issue affects every server or just one. Record any VPN, proxy, firewall, or antivirus involved, and note your audio devices if the problem is voice-only.
Discord’s voice-error guidance also asks users with unresolved issues to provide console logs. Following its instructions with the PTB or Canary client, open Developer Tools with Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows or Option+Command+I on macOS, join the affected call, and capture relevant entries from the Console tab. Why does Discord reconnect every few seconds?
It can be caused by an outage, an unstable network, or interference from a VPN, firewall, or restricted UDP route. Check Discord’s status and compare the same call on another network to narrow it down.

They indicate that Discord is having trouble establishing or maintaining a voice connection. They do not prove that one particular device or router is at fault; check service status, network, VPN, firewall, and routing.

Why does text work when Discord voice keeps disconnecting?
Voice has different connection requirements from ordinary text messaging. Discord voice uses UDP, so a network can allow text while blocking or disrupting voice traffic. (Source: Discord voice connections documentation.)
Does clearing Discord’s cache delete my servers or messages?
The cache folders described here contain temporary local files. Clearing them is not a fix for network problems, and you should delete only the specified cache folder. Do not delete unrelated data folders.
Should I change DNS to fix Discord disconnects?
Not as a universal first step. DNS or routing may be relevant if the problem is limited to one network, but first compare networks, check VPN and firewall interference, and identify whether the issue affects voice or the whole app.
Can a VPN fix Discord voice problems?
Sometimes a different route changes the result, but a VPN can also add latency or interfere with UDP. Test by disconnecting it first; if you need a VPN, it must support UDP for voice. Do not assume buying a VPN is the solution.
When should I ask Discord Support for help?
Contact support if the outage check, network comparisons, security checks, settings reset, and appropriate app troubleshooting do not resolve the issue. Include the exact error, affected platform and servers, network test results, and requested diagnostic logs.

First determine whether Discord is down, the whole app is disconnecting, or only voice is failing. Then restart, compare another network, check VPN and firewall interference, and test voice settings or another region where appropriate.
