Best VPN for Gaming on PC in 2026: What the Tests Actually Show

NordVPN is PC Gamer’s overall pick for PC gaming in its 2026 review, but a VPN is not a reliable way to lower ping. In the review’s UK Counter-Strike 2 Deathmatch test, average local ping was 12.73 ms with NordVPN and 12.58 ms without a VPN. That small difference is evidence about one setup, not a promise for your connection. The practical choice is the service that works with your game and anti-cheat system while adding the least latency and jitter on your route.

What the 2026 gaming tests found

PC Gamer tested Counter-Strike 2 Deathmatch against a same-country game server in the UK across multiple runs. Its reported average pings were:

Connection Average ping What the result means
No VPN 12.58 ms PC Gamer’s baseline for this UK test.
NordVPN 12.73 ms 0.15 ms above the review’s baseline in this test; not a general guarantee.
Surfshark 13.54 ms 0.96 ms above the review’s baseline in this test; not a general guarantee.

These figures are from PC Gamer’s 2026 review, not a controlled prediction for every ISP, game, server, or VPN endpoint. The review also reported that Valorant failed to load during its Surfshark test. That is a compatibility result from that review, not proof of a permanent or universal incompatibility. A VPN adds a network route between your PC and the game. That route can add latency or jitter, although the effect depends on where the VPN endpoint and game server are and how traffic is routed. Download speed alone does not tell you whether a VPN will feel good in a match.

How to choose a VPN for your gaming PC

Prioritize ping, jitter, and consistency

Look for repeatable results on your own connection and the game you actually play. Compare several sessions with the VPN off and on, preferably at similar times, using the same game region and server where possible. Record ping and any available jitter or packet-loss readings; a single unusually good or bad run is not enough to judge a route.

Security.org includes latency, speed, server locations, and DDoS concerns among its gaming VPN selection criteria. Its suggested 20–40 ms of added ping for competitive gaming is that publisher’s recommendation, not a universal technical standard. Your game, connection, and sensitivity to delay matter. Check the exact game and anti-cheat behavior

Before relying on a VPN, confirm that the game launches, matchmaking works, and the anti-cheat system does not block or flag the connection. If only one game has trouble, split tunneling may let you route that game outside the VPN while keeping other traffic protected, if the provider’s app supports the feature. If the title’s rules restrict VPN use or region changes, follow those rules rather than trying to bypass them.

Choose a nearby endpoint and a suitable protocol

A VPN server near you or the game server can avoid unnecessary routing distance, but proximity alone cannot guarantee the fastest path. Test a nearby endpoint first, then compare alternatives against your actual match server. NordVPN recommends its NordLynx protocol for gaming and other speed-dependent activities; that is the provider’s guidance, not an independent finding that it will be best on every route. Surfshark and Proton document WireGuard support. Proton also documents OpenVPN, open-source apps, a kill switch, and independent app audits. These are useful protocol and security considerations, but they do not replace game-specific latency and compatibility tests. Proton’s stated VPN Accelerator speed increase of over 400% is a provider claim, not a gaming benchmark. Proton VPN’s protocol and feature information

Match the service to your devices and setup

Check the current Windows app, simultaneous-connection allowance, split-tunneling support, router compatibility, and full-term subscription cost before choosing. Router installation can cover devices at the network level, but support depends on the router model and setup; it is not evidence of lower ping. A service’s advertised server access or ability to connect to another region also does not establish that changing regions is permitted by a particular game.

NordVPN PC Gamer’s overall gaming pick in its 2026 guide. Its UK CS2 test recorded 12.73 ms average ping, versus 12.58 ms without VPN. PC Gamer lists Windows support, NordLynx as WireGuard-based, split tunneling, and a 10-device limit in its review. NordVPN recommends NordLynx for gaming. Players who want a tested starting point and will verify performance on their own connection.
Surfshark PC Gamer recorded 13.54 ms average local CS2 ping in the same UK comparison and reported Valorant failed to load in its test. Surfshark says it supports Windows, split tunneling, unlimited simultaneous connections, and Wi-Fi router installation. Router compatibility varies by model. People prioritizing multiple simultaneous connections or split tunneling, provided their games work correctly.
Proton VPN PC Gamer reported somewhat higher CS2 ping and jitter in its testing; the cited comparison does not establish a universal ranking. Proton documents WireGuard and OpenVPN, open-source apps, a kill switch, and independent app audits. Players who value those documented app and security features and are willing to test their route.

How to test before using a VPN in a match

  1. Establish a baseline: Play or test the same game region with the VPN disconnected. Note ping, jitter if shown, packet loss if shown, and whether matchmaking behaves normally.
  2. Connect to a nearby VPN endpoint: Start with a location near you or the game server. Use the provider app’s available protocol options; for NordVPN, NordLynx is the provider-recommended starting point for gaming.
  3. Repeat under comparable conditions: Run several sessions with the VPN connected, using the same game and region when possible. Compare typical and variable results rather than selecting the best single reading.
  4. Check functionality as well as numbers: Confirm the game launches, anti-cheat works, and matchmaking completes. If one game fails and split tunneling is available, test routing that game outside the VPN.
  5. Keep or disconnect based on the outcome: If the VPN adds troublesome delay, instability, or compatibility problems, disconnect it for that game. A VPN is optional for PC gaming, and the available tests do not establish that it will reliably improve ping.

What a gaming VPN can and cannot do for DDoS exposure

A VPN can mask your home IP address from some other parties by presenting a VPN endpoint address instead. That may reduce exposure to attacks directed at your home address, but it does not make you immune to all DDoS attacks, protect every service you use, or ensure uninterrupted play. Treat IP masking as one limited privacy and exposure measure, not a guarantee of attack prevention.

Is NordVPN the best VPN for gaming PCs in 2026?

It is the clearest starting recommendation in the cited 2026 gaming review: PC Gamer selected NordVPN overall, and its local CS2 test was close to the no-VPN baseline. That does not make it universally fastest or best for every title. Use the review as a shortlist, then let your own game compatibility and repeated route measurements decide whether to keep it connected.
