Gran Turismo and Gran Turismo 2 sit at or near the top of published worldwide rankings of the best-selling original PlayStation games. The exact order and totals vary by source, however: available lists mix different dates and sales measures rather than presenting one consistently audited lifetime-sales table. The ranking below uses the figures in a compiled worldwide list, with that limitation made explicit.
How to read this PS1 sales ranking
The list is worldwide, not a US-only chart. Its title-level figures come from a compiled secondary reference, not one official dataset with a uniform method. A separate 2013 VGChartz table reports global sales for its top ten, while Sony’s 2010 table identifies its figures for Gran Turismo and Gran Turismo 2 as worldwide sell-in. Those measures and dates are not interchangeable, so the figures below should be treated as reported estimates rather than reconciled final lifetime totals.

In particular, “sell-in” means sales into the retail channel; it should not be described as units consumers bought. Sony reported 10.78 million worldwide sell-in for Gran Turismo and 9.34 million for Gran Turismo 2 in 2010. The compiled list gives 10.85 million and 9.37 million respectively, while VGChartz reported 11.15 million for the first Gran Turismo in 2013. These differences are a reason to retain each source’s label and date, not to combine the figures. Sony Computer Entertainment’s 2010 figures; VGChartz’s 2013 table; compiled title list.

Why published rankings disagree
Different dates and measures
A 2013 VGChartz table lists Gran Turismo at 11.15 million and Final Fantasy VII at 9.72 million. Sony’s 2010 series table instead reports worldwide sell-in of 10.78 million for Gran Turismo and 9.34 million for Gran Turismo 2. A compiled list gives still different values for some titles. The figures may reflect different reporting dates or methodologies; the sources do not establish a single explanation that reconciles every difference. Worldwide and US-only charts answer different questions
A US-only Circana units ranking shared by analyst Mat Piscatella starts with Gran Turismo 2, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, Gran Turismo, Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped, Jampack Series: PlayStation, Frogger, Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot, Tekken 3, Driver, and Final Fantasy VII. GameSpot reports that this chart excludes copies sold through hardware bundles. It is a US ranking, not a substitute for the worldwide list above. GameSpot’s report on the US chart.
What the sales history says about the PS1
Racing games, role-playing games, platformers, fighting games, and action-adventure titles all appear among the leading sellers. Gran Turismo’s position is especially well supported across the cited lists: Sony’s 1998 annual report said cumulative worldwide sales had passed 6 million by that point, and its 2010 table later reported 10.78 million worldwide sell-in. The 1998 report also noted about 2 million Gran Turismo sales in Japan during the year under review, a regional figure that should not be mistaken for its worldwide total.
