Turning off Windows 11’s Animation effects can make the interface feel more responsive, especially if you find fades and slides distracting. Microsoft says visual effects use system resources and adjusting them may improve responsiveness—but the difference depends on the PC, and there is no measured speed gain established for this particular change.
What changes when you turn off Animation effects?
Animation effects control motion in parts of the Windows interface, such as transitions that fade or slide into view. With the setting off, those transitions no longer play. The interface may feel more immediate, but this is a change to how Windows looks and responds visually—not a fix that necessarily speeds up demanding apps, games, file transfers, or your internet connection.

A report published September 24, 2026, describes one person noticing a subjective improvement on an older spare laptop after changing visual effects. It does not provide a controlled before-and-after test, benchmark, or quantified result, so treat that experience as anecdotal rather than a promise of faster performance. - Open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects.
- Switch Animation effects off.
- Use Windows for a while and decide whether the simpler transitions feel better on your PC. You can return to the same setting and turn animations back on at any time.
Animation effects and Transparency effects are separate
The same Visual effects page has a separate Transparency effects switch. Animation effects change motion and transitions; Transparency effects change translucent backgrounds in parts of the interface. Turn off transparency only if you also prefer the more solid appearance—it is not required to disable animations.

Choose individual effects in Performance Options
If you want finer control than the single Accessibility switch provides, Windows also has a classic Performance Options panel where you can select visual effects individually. Its Custom option lets you keep particular effects while disabling others, balancing appearance against responsiveness. Which effects to retain is a matter of preference; the available guidance does not establish a Microsoft ranking of settings for best performance.
If Windows still feels slow
Changing visual effects is only one possible adjustment. If it makes little difference, investigate other causes rather than assuming animations were responsible. Microsoft notes that results depend on the device and the source of the slowdown; settings changes may not substantially help older hardware.

Check background apps separately
Background app permissions are not the same setting as visual effects. For supported apps, Windows can control whether they run in the background, where they may sync or send notifications. Microsoft notes that desktop apps are not managed by the same background-app list (Microsoft’s background activity guidance).

Apps configured to start with Windows are another separate source of background activity and can affect responsiveness. In Task Manager, open the startup apps list to review what launches and its displayed impact. The impact indicator concerns startup apps; it does not measure the effect of Animation effects (Microsoft Learn: Configure startup applications).

Use a clean boot to isolate conflicts
If you suspect a startup program or service is causing a problem, Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure can help isolate it. A clean boot temporarily changes which services and startup items run, so some functionality may be unavailable while troubleshooting. Follow Microsoft’s instructions and restore normal startup after the test (Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions).

The steps above are specifically for Windows 11. Microsoft states that free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 ended after October 14, 2025. That support change is separate from visual-effects settings; check Microsoft’s current support information if you still use Windows 10 (Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance).
