Its value is the time it creates: you can investigate a warning, repair a job, replace a suspect drive, or fix a security finding while your data is still available. The most useful reports combine backup results, storage and drive health, capacity, security checks, and system errors in one short message.
What a useful NAS morning report contains
The report should answer two questions quickly: What changed? and What action is needed today? A practical report groups events into five categories.

A concise subject line can include the NAS name, date, and severity. Put failures and warnings first; a long list of successful jobs should not bury an urgent event.
How NAS vendors deliver the warnings
Local notification is available through several channels. Synology DSM supports email, push notifications, and webhooks for system-status changes and errors. QNAP documents email alerts for system errors and warnings, plus push notifications for warning or error events. Email is easy to archive, push is harder to miss, and a webhook can feed a ticketing or automation system.

For scheduled checks, Synology Security Advisor can consolidate findings into daily or monthly reports and email them when notifications are enabled. Synology’s scheduled data-protection reports summarize missed or unsuccessful backups from the previous period, which makes a quiet-looking NAS easier to audit.
One NAS versus many
If you manage one device, its own notification settings and Storage Manager are usually sufficient. Multiple NAS units benefit from centralized monitoring. Synology Active Insight provides dashboards, custom rules, anomaly notifications, and troubleshooting advice. QNAP’s DA Drive Analyzer sends daily drive-health and event data for cloud analysis and offers drive-failure prediction. QNAP says the service is trained with historical data from over a million drives; that is a vendor claim, not an independent failure-rate study.

SMART is an early signal, not a guarantee
Storage Manager tools can run regular SMART tests, extended tests, bad-sector checks, and, on supported drives, IronWolf Health tests. Synology describes a SMART test as examining and reporting drive status and condition while alerting you to possible failure. Synology also recommends regular SMART tests and event-triggered notifications as precautions against data loss.

Those checks are valuable, but they do not certify that a disk is safe or that every file is recoverable. A drive can fail without a useful advance warning, and a drive that passes a short test can still develop an intermittent cable, controller, firmware, or power problem. Treat a warning as a request to investigate, not as a prediction with a guaranteed deadline.

What to do when a report flags a drive
- Open the vendor health page. In Synology, review Storage Manager’s drive details, SMART history, extended-test results, bad-sector notices, and recent I/O events. Use the equivalent health and event-log pages on another vendor’s NAS.
- Check whether the symptom is repeatable. Record the attribute or error, test date, temperature, and affected bay. Look for repeated errors rather than dismissing a single notification.
- Confirm backup and restore health. Check that the latest backup completed. Scheduled data-protection reports are useful because they expose missed or unsuccessful jobs, but a green job is not proof until you can restore a representative file.
- Check the array before touching hardware. Identify the RAID level, current redundancy, rebuild status, free capacity, and any second disk already reporting errors. A rebuild with another weak disk can turn a manageable replacement into an outage.
- Verify the replacement. Before ordering a NAS hard drive, check the NAS compatibility list, interface, supported capacity, sector format, warranty, and the RAID layout’s replacement rules. Do not assume that any desktop disk with the right connector is suitable.
- Replace or repair according to the vendor procedure. Follow the documented hot-swap or shutdown process, then monitor the rebuild and keep a current backup while redundancy is reduced.
- Document the outcome. Record the alert, tests, serial or bay, action, replacement date, rebuild result, and follow-up test. That history gives the next morning’s report useful context.
Use the report to find quieter failures
Drive alerts are the dramatic cases, but backup and security findings often provide more recovery time. A failed destination mount, expired credential, or full backup target can leave you without a recent copy for weeks if nobody reviews the result. Security Advisor’s scheduled findings can reveal outdated settings or risky exposure before an account is compromised. Capacity warnings similarly provide time to delete, move, or expand data before snapshots and backups start failing.

- Send alerts to an account you check outside the NAS itself; a mail outage or dead NAS should not hide the warning.
- Keep event-triggered alerts for errors and critical warnings, and use the daily digest for routine status.
- Run extended tests during a maintenance window because they add load and can slow normal activity.
- Do not silence repeated alerts without recording the reason, owner, and review date.
- Keep at least one backup path independent of the NAS and perform periodic restore tests.
The reliable pattern is alert, inspect logs and tests, confirm backup and restore health, repair or replace the affected component, and document the result. A morning report is valuable precisely because it makes that sequence hard to overlook.
