If you are signed in to Snapchat, open My Account, tap the gear icon for Settings, choose Password, and follow the prompts. If you are signed out or forgot the password, tap Forgot your password? on the login screen and reset it by email or SMS. The instructions below reflect Snapchat’s current documented flows; labels can change as the app is updated.
Choose the right Snapchat password route
Your first step depends on whether you can still open the account and whether you can receive messages at its registered email address or phone number.

Change a known password in the Snapchat app
This is the quickest method when the app is already open on your account. You do not need to sign out first.

- Open My Account.
- Tap the gear icon to open Settings.
- Tap Password.
- Complete the on-screen directions and save the new password.
After saving, use the new password the next time Snapchat asks you to sign in. If the app displays a verification request, complete that request before leaving Settings. Menu wording can move between releases, so look for the account settings area and the item labeled Password if your screen is arranged differently.

What to have ready
- A password of at least eight characters.
- A combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
- A version that does not contain your name, username, phone number, birthday, or other personal information.
Do not paste the new password into chats or notes that other people can access. Snapchat’s own warning is explicit: “Never share your password with anyone — not even us! A Snapchat representative will never ask for your password.”
Change the password through Snapchat’s web account flow
A browser-based change is useful when you cannot use the app but can still identify the account and receive its verification message.
- Open Snapchat’s account flow and sign in with your Snapchat username or email.
- Enter the verification code Snapchat sends.
- Follow the directions presented after verification to change the password.
The web route is an account-verification flow, not a way to bypass verification. If the code goes to an email address or phone number you cannot access, use the recovery-limit guidance below rather than repeatedly requesting codes.
Reset a forgotten password by email
Email recovery works when the address attached to the Snapchat account is still available to you.
- On the Snapchat login screen, tap Forgot your password?
- Select email.
- Open the reset link sent to the email address associated with the account.
- Enter and save the new password.
If the reset link is not clickable in your mail app, copy it and paste it into a browser. Make sure you are using the message sent for the current reset attempt; an older link may not take you through the current flow. Once the new password is accepted, return to Snapchat and sign in with it.

If the email message does not appear
- Check the inbox for the exact address associated with the account, including spam or junk folders.
- Confirm that you selected email, not SMS, on the recovery screen.
- Request a new reset only after checking for the first message, then use the newest link you receive.
- If you cannot access that email account at all, the normal reset cannot be completed through email.
Reset a forgotten password by SMS
SMS recovery uses the phone number already associated with the Snapchat account.
- Tap Forgot your password? on the login screen.
- Select SMS.
- Enter the verification code sent to the associated phone number.
- Select Continue to log in.
- Open My Account → Settings → Password and set the new password.
The SMS code proves access to the registered number; it does not replace every other security check. If Snapchat asks for an additional verification or recovery code because Login Verification is enabled, you must provide that code as well.

Snapchat’s Accounts Portal provides another browser route. Enter the phone number or email associated with the account, then select Forgot Password. Snapchat will direct you to the available verification and password-reset steps for that account.
This portal still depends on access to the associated contact method. Entering an address or number that was never attached to the account will not recover it, and the portal does not remove two-factor requirements.
Password requirements that prevent rejection
Snapchat says a new password should be at least eight characters and should not include identifying details. A longer phrase made from unrelated words can satisfy the length rule without exposing your name or birthday. Add a mixture of character types rather than changing only one letter in an old password.

- Length: use eight or more characters.
- Avoid personal data: leave out your name, username, phone number, birthday, and similar information.
- Mix character types: combine capital and lowercase letters with numbers and symbols.
- Keep it private: Snapchat says representatives will never ask for your password.
If Snapchat rejects a proposed password, check those requirements first and re-enter it carefully. A password that differs from the one you intended by a single character can cause another failed login, so verify the characters before saving.

Two-factor authentication and Login Verification
Account recovery changes when additional login security is enabled.
Where two-factor codes arrive
Snapchat says two-factor authentication codes are delivered by SMS or generated by an authentication app, never by email. Therefore, choosing email on the ordinary Forgot your password? screen does not deliver a two-factor login code to your inbox.
When a recovery code is required
If Login Verification is enabled, Snapchat says you may need both the password and a verification code or recovery code. Keep the recovery code available before signing out of a working session. A successful password reset does not necessarily remove this second check.

What if you lost your old phone number or email?
This is the most important recovery limitation: Snapchat Support says it cannot send a reset to a different address or number and cannot update those contact details for you. The normal email and SMS procedures therefore cannot be completed if you have lost access to both the registered email and the registered phone number.

Before concluding that access is gone, check whether you are still signed in on another device. If you are, open My Account → Settings and confirm which email address and mobile number are currently associated with the account. Change the password immediately while that session is available, then protect the email or phone account itself so you do not lose the recovery channel again.
If you are completely signed out and cannot receive either type of verification, do not give a supposed helper your password or a one-time code. Snapchat’s published guidance does not promise a manual override for this situation.
If you think someone accessed the account
Change the password immediately if you notice any of the signs Snapchat lists:
- An unfamiliar two-factor method was added.
- You see repeated logins that were not yours.
- Contacts appear that you did not add.
- Posts or messages were sent that you did not create.
- While signed in, open My Account → Settings → Password and save a new password.
- In Settings, confirm that the correct email address and mobile number are still associated with the account.
- Review the two-factor method and recovery information for changes you did not make.
- If you are signed out, use the email or SMS reset route immediately, then perform the same checks after you regain access.
Snapchat’s security warning also covers its private-storage feature: “Never share your password or My Eyes Only passcode with anyone — not even us!” Treat an unsolicited request for either as an account-security risk.

The app does not show the exact menu labels
Snapchat can change navigation labels and placement between releases. Start from your profile or My Account, open the gear-shaped Settings screen, and look for Password. If you are signed out, use the login screen’s Forgot your password? option instead of searching through account settings that are unavailable.

The reset link opens a blank page or is not clickable
Copy the complete link from the email and paste it into a browser, as Snapchat’s instructions advise. Avoid deleting characters at the beginning or end of the copied address. After the page opens, complete the password form and then sign in again in the app.
The SMS code never arrives
Confirm that you selected SMS and that the displayed number is the one attached to the account. If that number is no longer yours, SMS recovery cannot reach you. Use the email route only if you still control the associated email address.
Snapchat asks for another code after the password reset
This is consistent with two-factor authentication or Login Verification. Use the SMS code or authentication-app code specified by Snapchat, or enter the recovery code when requested. Email is not the delivery channel for a two-factor code.
The new password works nowhere
Re-enter it carefully, including capitalization and symbols, and make sure you are signing in to the intended username. If you changed the password in the app, wait for the save confirmation before closing Settings. Then sign out and test the new credentials once rather than repeatedly submitting a mistyped password.
After you successfully change the password
- Sign in again on the devices where Snapchat asks for credentials.
- Confirm the account’s email address and mobile number in Settings.
- Check that the expected two-factor method remains enabled if you use one.
- Store any recovery code somewhere private and accessible to you.
- Do not share the password, verification code, recovery code, or My Eyes Only passcode with anyone claiming to provide support.
These checks separate a simple password change from an account takeover response: you are verifying not only that the new password works, but also that the recovery channels and security settings still belong to you.
