MSI Afterburner is a free Windows utility for tuning and monitoring a graphics card. It can adjust GPU clock and voltage controls when your hardware and driver expose them, display live GPU and CPU statistics, manage supported fan curves, run benchmarking checks, and place selected metrics over a game. Despite the MSI name, MSI says it works with graphics cards from all brands.
The safe way to get it is from MSI’s official Afterburner page or the authorized Guru3D download page. Those are the distribution locations identified by MSI and Guru3D; search ads, look-alike domains, file mirrors, and “cracked” installers are not equivalent sources.

What MSI Afterburner does
Afterburner is a Windows graphics-card utility rather than a game, driver package, or replacement for Windows’ display settings. Its controls sit between the graphics driver and the applications using the GPU. Depending on the card, firmware, and driver, you may be able to change operating limits and then watch how the card behaves under a workload.
- Overclocking: raises GPU or memory clock targets when the card exposes those controls.
- Undervolting: lowers the voltage target on hardware and drivers that permit it, allowing you to test a different performance, heat, or power balance.
- Monitoring: displays GPU and CPU statistics while you work or play.
- On-screen display (OSD): puts selected readings inside a game window.
- Fan control: lets supported desktop cards use a custom fan curve.
- Benchmarking and tuning: combines live readings with repeatable workloads so you can compare one setting with another.
“Works with all brands” means the utility is not restricted to MSI-branded graphics cards. It does not mean every card offers every slider. A board partner, laptop manufacturer, BIOS, or driver can withhold voltage, power-limit, memory, or fan controls. A missing control is often a hardware or firmware limitation rather than a defective installation.

Is MSI Afterburner safe?
The application itself is legitimate when obtained from an authorized source, but the name is frequently copied by unofficial download pages. MSI warns that fake sites can distribute phishing pages or modified installers. Guru3D identifies MSI.com and Guru3D.com as the authorized distribution locations. Treat an installer from any other domain as untrusted, even if its filename and screenshots look familiar.
Download safety checklist
- Type the MSI or Guru3D address yourself or use a bookmark you created from the genuine site.
- Confirm that the page identifies the package as an MSI Afterburner Windows release and shows a version number.
- Do not use a search advertisement, “mirror,” repack, torrent, or cracked edition.
- Read the displayed channel carefully: a final build and a beta build are separate choices.
- Keep the installer you downloaded until you have confirmed that the installed version matches the page.
Safety while tuning
Changing clocks or voltage can increase heat, power draw, fan noise, or instability. An unstable setting can make a game close, produce visual errors, or restart the display driver. Start from the card’s default settings, change one control at a time, and test with a workload you can repeat. Do not assume that a setting stable in one game is stable in every game.
There is no universal FPS, temperature, or power improvement that applies to every GPU. Results depend on the exact model, workload, cooling arrangement, driver, and settings. Save a known-good profile before experimenting and keep a way to return to defaults if Windows or a game becomes unstable.
Current Afterburner versions and release channels
MSI’s product page currently lists two channels, both shown as released in September 2026. The authorized Guru3D page separately lists a specific beta build. Check the page on the day you download because a beta number can change independently of the final channel.
| Listing | Channel | Version or build | Date shown by the source | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MSI product page | Final | 4.6.6 Final | September 2026 | Use when you want the stable release channel. |
| MSI product page | Beta | 4.6.7 Beta | September 2026 | Use only when you specifically need or want beta changes. |
| Authorized Guru3D page | Beta | 4.6.7 Beta 3, build 17352 | 2026-06-19 | A Windows 64-bit beta listing; verify that the page still presents this build before installing. |
The different dates do not make one page unsafe. They describe different listings and release information. If you do not need a beta feature, the final channel is the simpler starting point. If you choose a beta, record its exact version so you can identify it when troubleshooting.
Where to download MSI Afterburner
MSI’s official Afterburner page and the authorized Guru3D download page are the two sources identified by the vendors. MSI’s support guidance says to use one of those locations to ensure you receive the correct version.

- Video Memory: 4GB DDR4
- Boost Clock: 1430 MHz
- Memory Interface: 64-bit
- Output: DisplayPort x 1 (v1.4a) / HDMI 2.0b x 1
- Open the official MSI Afterburner page or the authorized Guru3D Afterburner page directly.
- Check the version number and whether the listing says Final or Beta. On Guru3D, also check the build number and date.
- Download the Windows installer offered on that page. Do not follow a third-party “download now” button that redirects elsewhere.
- Before running it, compare the installer’s displayed version with the listing you selected.
- If you want an in-game overlay, keep the RivaTuner Statistics Server component available during setup. MSI also says RTSS can be downloaded separately from Guru3D.
A page that claims to be the only “official mirror,” offers a modified or unlocked edition, or asks you to disable security protections is not part of this safe workflow.

Installing it without unnecessary components
- Run the Windows installer downloaded from MSI or Guru3D.
- Read the setup screens and accept the license terms if you agree to them.
- When the component selection appears, choose MSI Afterburner. Select RivaTuner Statistics Server as well if you need the in-game OSD or its related monitoring and capture functions.
- Complete the installation, then launch Afterburner from the installed shortcut.
- Open the program’s monitoring and control panels before launching a game. Confirm that the expected GPU is detected and that readings change when the GPU is under load.
- If you installed RTSS for an overlay, launch both applications and configure which readings should appear. The overlay will not work if either required background process is closed.
The exact wording or order of installer screens can change between releases. The important choices are the verified source, the final-versus-beta channel, and whether RTSS is included for overlay use.
What the main controls mean
| Feature | What you can do | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Core and memory clocks | Test higher or otherwise different clock targets. | The available range and stability depend on the GPU, BIOS, and driver. |
| Voltage controls | Test an overclock or undervolt when voltage adjustment is exposed. | Some cards and drivers lock these controls. |
| Power and related limits | Adjust limits that the card makes available for tuning. | Controls vary by board design and firmware. |
| Monitoring graphs | Watch GPU and CPU statistics during a workload. | Sensor names and coverage differ by hardware. |
| On-screen display | Show selected metrics over a game window. | RivaTuner Statistics Server is required, and both programs must run in the background. |
| Fan curve | Set a temperature-to-fan-speed response on supported cards. | Laptop GPUs cannot use custom fan curves because their manufacturer BIOS presets those curves. |
| Profiles | Save a known-good configuration and return to it after testing. | A profile that works on one workload may still fail in another. |
RivaTuner Statistics Server: do you need it?
RTSS is the companion service that supplies Afterburner’s in-game overlay and related monitoring or capture functions. You do not need RTSS simply to open Afterburner, inspect settings, or use controls that work without an overlay. You do need it for the OSD.
| Your goal | RTSS needed? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Adjust clocks or voltage in Afterburner | No | Install and run Afterburner; available controls still depend on the card and driver. |
| View readings in Afterburner’s own window | No | Use the monitoring panel in Afterburner. |
| Show FPS, temperatures, clocks, or other readings inside a game | Yes | Install RTSS, keep it running with Afterburner, and select the metrics for the OSD. |
| Use RTSS-related monitoring or capture functions | Yes | Install the matching RTSS build and run both components. |
Guru3D recommends obtaining RTSS from Guru3D and notes that the latest Afterburner package includes a stable RTSS build. If you install RTSS separately, keep its version aligned with the Afterburner package you are using.
Using Afterburner on a non-MSI graphics card
You can use Afterburner with a graphics card from another manufacturer; the MSI branding does not limit compatibility. The practical question is which controls that particular card exposes. A desktop card may provide clock, voltage, power, and fan options, while another model may lock one or more of them.

Laptop GPUs
Afterburner can still be useful for monitoring and for any tuning controls the laptop permits. However, MSI’s support guidance states that laptop GPUs cannot use custom fan curves because the manufacturer’s BIOS presets those curves. The missing fan-curve editor is therefore a platform limitation, not proof that the entire application is unusable.

- Record the baseline. Run a repeatable game scene or benchmark and note the readings that matter to you, such as clocks, temperatures, utilization, and frame-rate behavior.
- Leave the default profile available. Do not overwrite the only configuration that starts reliably.
- Change one variable. Adjust a clock, voltage, or other exposed control by a small step, then apply it.
- Watch the monitoring data. Look for abnormal temperatures, sudden clock drops, visual corruption, application exits, or a driver reset.
- Test long enough to reproduce the workload. A setting that survives a short menu test is not necessarily stable in a long gaming session.
- Keep or revert. If the result is unstable, return to the last known-good profile before testing another change.
- Document the result. Record the exact Afterburner version, driver, game or workload, and setting so you can reproduce or undo it later.
This process is for finding a stable personal configuration, not for chasing a guaranteed performance percentage. Your cooling, silicon sample, case airflow, and workload determine the outcome.
Troubleshooting common problems
The in-game overlay does not appear
- Confirm that both MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server are running in the background.
- Check that the desired metrics are selected for the OSD rather than only being displayed in Afterburner’s monitoring window.
- Test with another game or application. Some software handles overlays differently.
- If RTSS was installed separately, verify that it came from the authorized Guru3D location and matches the Afterburner package.
A fan-curve option is missing
On a laptop, this is expected: the manufacturer BIOS presets the fan curve. On a desktop, the card or its firmware may simply not expose custom fan control. You can still use Afterburner for monitoring and any other controls that are available.
Recommended Free Tools
A clock or voltage slider is unavailable
Afterburner only adjusts controls exposed by the GPU, board firmware, and driver. Check that the card is detected correctly and that you are not expecting a control your model intentionally locks. Do not install a modified package to bypass a missing control.
A game crashes after a change
- Close the game and return Afterburner to the last known-good profile or defaults.
- Run the same workload without the change to confirm that the crash is related to the new setting.
- Apply smaller changes, one at a time, if you continue testing.
- If the issue began after installing a beta build, compare behavior with the current final build and note the exact versions.
You are unsure which build you installed
Open Afterburner’s version information and compare it with the MSI or Guru3D listing. Record whether it is 4.6.6 Final, 4.6.7 Beta, or the specific 4.6.7 Beta 3 build 17352 listing. Version identity matters when a setting or overlay behaves differently between channels.
Optional Windows maintenance shortcut
If Windows-side problems are complicating your manual troubleshooting, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut that can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, and shared DLL files; it also offers settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, privacy tools, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, includes a free trial by category of at least two days, and then requires a subscription. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Bottom line
MSI Afterburner is a free, cross-brand Windows utility for graphics-card tuning, monitoring, benchmarking, and supported fan control. Download it only from MSI’s official page or the authorized Guru3D page, distinguish the 4.6.6 Final channel from the 4.6.7 Beta listings, and add RTSS when you need an in-game overlay. Use conservative, reversible changes because available controls and results depend on your specific GPU, firmware, driver, cooling, and workload.
