My NAS Only Turns On Once a Month. Is That Really a Problem?

A NAS used mainly as a backup target may not need to run all day. A monthly schedule can suit static data, but the right cadence depends on how much recent work you can afford to lose.

Not necessarily. If a NAS is used mainly as a backup target for files that rarely change, switching it on for a scheduled backup and leaving it offline the rest of the time can be a reasonable workflow. The tradeoff is that changes made since the last successful backup may be lost if the primary copy fails. A monthly schedule is a personal choice, not a universally safe cadence.

Why a backup NAS can stay offline

A NAS that serves everyday files needs to be available when people or devices need those files. A NAS used only as a backup destination has a different job: it can be powered on when a backup is due, then shut down or disconnected between sessions. QNAP describes this kind of normally powered-off backup workflow in its guidance on scheduling power for remote NAS systems.

Keeping a backup copy offline or otherwise isolated can also limit its exposure to network-based threats. CISA advises disconnecting an external backup drive when it is not being used, since a connected drive could be reached by ransomware. That principle can apply to a NAS only when it is genuinely unavailable to the network or compromised devices; a powered-on NAS that remains accessible is not automatically an offline backup. See CISA’s guidance on protecting device data.

What a monthly schedule costs you

The key question is not how often a NAS should be turned on in general. It is how much recent work you can afford to lose. If the NAS runs a backup once a month, a failure of the primary storage could leave you without changes made after the last completed backup. That interval may be acceptable for a static archive; it may be unacceptable for active projects, photos, or business records that change every day.

Choose a cadence based on how quickly your important data changes and how much recovery-point gap you can tolerate. The cited guidance supports offline backups, but does not establish a universally safe monthly interval. Frequent backups reduce the amount of recent data at risk; offline time can reduce exposure. Those goals need to be balanced for your situation.

Shut down deliberately, not by cutting power

A planned shutdown through the NAS’s operating system is different from abruptly pulling its power cable. QNAP warns that sudden power loss can prevent data from being saved safely and may cause data loss or file-system corruption. It recommends a compatible UPS and configuring the NAS to shut down automatically during a power failure. Read QNAP’s power-outage guidance for its recommendations.

Synology says its UPS feature can keep a NAS running briefly so it can save data and unmount volumes before power is lost. UPS behavior varies by brand and model, so check compatibility for your exact NAS and UPS and verify that the configured shutdown works as expected. Synology explains the feature in its DSM 7 UPS documentation.

Automate only what your equipment supports

Some NAS systems offer scheduling or power-management features, but their labels and capabilities vary by manufacturer, model, and software version. Synology’s DSM 7 documentation, for example, describes setting a drive idle period before hibernation, optional NAS auto-poweroff after internal drives hibernate, and Wake on LAN for supported configurations. Wake on LAN must be enabled if you intend to start a supported NAS remotely. Consult the documentation for your own system rather than assuming those Synology settings exist on other devices. See Synology’s drive-hibernation documentation.

Automation is useful only if the entire chain works: the NAS powers on, the backup actually runs, and the NAS shuts down cleanly afterward. Check the backup job’s completion status rather than treating a scheduled start as proof that a copy exists.

Does turning it off extend drive life?

There is not enough evidence here to say that monthly power cycling extends hard-drive life or that it is better for every NAS than continuous operation. QNAP’s March 30, 2026 article, updated August 24, 2026, says that frequent power cycling does not affect NAS hardware lifespan when shutdowns are performed correctly. That is QNAP’s manufacturer guidance, not an independent, quantified comparison of failure rates across NAS models or drives. The cited sources do not establish a general reliability advantage for either monthly cycling or 24/7 operation.

Make sure the backup is restorable

A backup is valuable only if it completed and you can recover the files. After setting up a schedule, confirm that backup jobs finish successfully and periodically test restoring a representative file or folder. Also consider whether another copy should remain available between NAS sessions—for example, an external drive disconnected when not in use or a vetted cloud backup. CISA recommends frequent backups and safe storage of backup media, but no option is universally best for every user.
