SEO still matters for B2B SaaS in AI-assisted search. Google says its generative Search features build on core Search ranking and quality systems, so the durable priorities remain crawlable, indexable pages, useful content, and clear evidence of expertise—not a separate “GEO hack.”

Does SEO still matter for B2B SaaS in the age of AI search?

Yes. SaaS buyers can encounter products through traditional search results and AI-assisted answers, but AI search has not made discoverability or useful landing pages obsolete. Google Search Central says its generative AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems. Its guidance describes retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out as ways its systems can gather relevant results, while retaining foundational Search systems.

For a SaaS company, that means building pages around real buyer questions and decision criteria: the problem a product solves, who it suits, how it fits a workflow, and how it differs from alternatives. A category keyword alone is not a useful content strategy. A page should help a particular audience make progress, whether it appears as a conventional result or is considered for an AI feature.

Google Search Central’s guidance on generative AI features says the best practices for SEO remain relevant. It also says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to be eligible for its generative AI features.

What should a SaaS team do first?

  1. Check technical eligibility. Make sure important pages can be crawled and indexed, and that they are eligible to appear with a Search snippet. Clear site architecture and accessible page content give Search systems a chance to understand the material.
  2. Map content to buyer intent. Identify the audience, problem, terminology, decision criteria, and product fit for each page. Give product-specific questions product-specific answers instead of repeating generic category language.
  3. Bring real expertise to the page. Add original analysis, attributable data, practical detail, and expert perspective where available. Distinctive evidence can make a page more useful, but no particular content ingredient guarantees an AI citation.
  4. Build credible visibility beyond your own site. Publish useful vendor material for product-specific expertise and pursue credible third-party coverage that supports reputation and comparison. Treat these as complementary rather than competing approaches.
  5. Measure what matters. Use Google Search Console’s Generative AI performance report where available to understand performance in Google Search AI features. Also track qualified organic visits and conversions; visibility alone is not pipeline or revenue.

What do B2B SaaS studies say about AI citations?

Two 2026 studies offer useful observations, but their figures describe bounded samples—not universal search behavior, causal rules, or forecasts for an individual company.

Content signals in Citera Research’s analysis

Citera Research’s May 21, 2026 study says it analyzed approximately 350,000 B2B SaaS articles across 10,382 keywords and 52 categories, using Google and four AI search engines. In that corpus, AI-cited articles averaged 4.2 statistics and 1.6 expert quotes; non-cited articles averaged 1.2 statistics and 0.2 expert quotes. These are observed differences, not evidence that adding a statistic or quote causes citation.

The same study attributed 61% of its AI citations to earned media and 29% to brand-owned content. That supports a balanced visibility strategy: develop useful first-party content while also earning credible third-party coverage. The shares are specific to Citera’s corpus, platforms, extraction methods, and date; they should not be treated as a universal split.

AI Overviews and citation share in Overthink Group’s sample

Overthink Group’s April 16, 2026 analysis examined 1,000 search results pages across 250 niche software categories and a separate set of 1,000 prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. AI Overviews appeared on 21.8% of the analyzed search results pages. In the separate prompt set, G2 represented 4.1% of answer-generator citation share. The study focused on solution-aware niche SaaS searches, so neither percentage predicts what will happen for every category, query, or company.

Is GEO different from SEO?

“GEO” is often used for work intended to improve visibility in generative or AI search experiences. It can be a useful label for a team’s measurement or content goals, but Google’s published guidance does not describe a separate technical optimization system that replaces SEO. Its recommendations for generative features build on the same core concerns: eligibility, useful content, and Search fundamentals.

That does not mean every tactic or measurement is identical across search products. It means teams should avoid treating a newly coined label as proof that they need a parallel technical playbook. Start with the buyer’s needs and the systems’ published requirements, then test whether a specific activity improves a meaningful business outcome.

Do I need an llms.txt file or special markup for AI search?

Not for eligibility in Google Search’s generative AI features, according to Google’s documentation. Google says special AI files and markup are not required, and specifically says Search ignores llms.txt. It also says there is no ideal page length, no need to chunk content into a particular format, and no reason to rewrite pages solely for AI.

Use structured data when it accurately describes page content and serves an established Search purpose; do not add invented or AI-specific markup expecting it to force inclusion. Likewise, do not restructure a useful page into arbitrary fragments just to pursue a rumored citation advantage.

How can I measure AI search visibility?

For Google Search, consult the Generative AI performance report in Search Console where it is available, alongside standard Search performance and site analytics. Review whether relevant pages are indexed, whether qualified visitors arrive, and whether those visits lead to meaningful actions such as a demo request or trial signup.

Third-party AI visibility monitors may help answer a defined operational question, such as whether a set of prompts mentions the company over time. Their outputs are vendor measurements, not internal Google data or proof of traffic, conversions, or revenue. Avoid using one citation score as a substitute for pipeline measurement.

Should a SaaS company invest in SEO or AI visibility tools?

Prioritize durable SEO work: technical eligibility, pages that satisfy real buyer intent, distinctive product knowledge, and credible reputation. Add monitoring tools only when they answer a concrete question the team cannot answer with its existing analytics or Search Console. Neither a tool nor an SEO program can guarantee a ranking, AI Overview appearance, citation, traffic increase, or revenue result; the cited studies do not establish such guarantees.
