There are two different ways to “migrate” a Wix site: transfer ownership to another Wix account, or rebuild the site on a different platform and move its content and data. Wix supports the first. It does not let you export an existing Wix site as a package to host elsewhere, so leaving Wix requires recreating the site on the destination platform.
Choose the migration that matches your destination
| Route | Destination | What moves | Main work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transfer ownership | Another Wix account | The site and, depending on eligibility and transfer choices, associated items such as a plan, domain, business email, or premium apps | Review transfer options, data exclusions, subscription responsibility, and any URL change before the recipient accepts |
| Rebuild and migrate content | Another website platform | Content and records that you export, import, or recreate using the available tools for each content type | Recreate the design and functions, move data, map URLs, test the new site, and switch the domain when ready |
Wix says its sites rely on Wix technology and services and cannot be hosted by another provider. Your content belongs to you, but the site itself is not an exportable package. Changing the provider that manages your domain does not move the Wix site: a domain can be managed elsewhere and still point to a site running on Wix. Wix explains the distinction between hosting and domain management.

Method 1: Transfer a site to another Wix account
Use an ownership transfer when the site should remain on Wix but belong to a different account. Wix allows owners to transfer free and premium sites. For a premium site, the transfer flow may offer the site plan, domain, associated business email, and eligible premium apps; some premium subscriptions are not transferable. Check the options shown for your site rather than assuming every subscription or service will move. Wix’s transfer instructions describe the available choices and exclusions.

Prepare the transfer and confirm who will manage it
- Sign in to the Wix account that owns the site and open the site’s transfer-ownership flow in the dashboard.
- Enter the recipient’s Wix account details and review the items offered for transfer, including any eligible plan, domain, business email, and premium apps.
- Decide whether to retain collaborator access or keep a copy if those choices appear in the flow. A copy is not a complete business-data backup; see the data caveats below.
- Confirm who will manage future subscription payments. Payment details do not transfer, and the recipient is responsible for future payments on transferred subscriptions.
- Ask the recipient to accept the invitation. Wix says transfer invitations expire after three days.
Check the site address and transferred data
For a free Wix site, the URL prefix is tied to the account. When ownership moves, the prefix—and therefore the site address—can change. The recipient can change the prefix and address in their account settings, subject to availability. Check links that use the old address and update them where needed. Wix explains how free-site URL prefixes work.
#1 Best Overall
A whole-site transfer and a duplicate do not carry the same things. Wix says contacts transfer to the new account, and a whole-site transfer includes Wix Stores products, collections, and settings. Site media remains associated with the site. Digital product display transfers, but the digital files do not; Velo elements transfer except for secrets in Secrets Manager; and email campaign statistics do not transfer with campaigns. Confirm the current transfer details for your site before proceeding. Wix lists transfer-specific data details.
Do not treat a duplicate as a full backup
Duplicating a site can be useful for creating a working copy, but Wix warns that a duplicate may omit contacts, orders, invoices, third-party app settings, and other business-related data. Inventory what the site uses and separately export or recreate anything excluded. If the goal is a new owner, use the ownership-transfer flow rather than assuming a duplicate completes the handover. Wix describes the difference and its limitations.

Method 2: Rebuild the site on another platform
For a move to WordPress, Shopify, or another builder, create the destination site and migrate content and records with the tools available for each type of data. The exact process depends on the destination and on whether your Wix site uses a blog, store, bookings, members, forms, or other Wix services. Expect to recreate the design and functionality; do not expect to upload the Wix site itself to another host. Wix’s guidance on moving away from Wix explains why a rebuild is required.

Before building, list the pages and services that must work on the new platform. For each item, identify whether you can export it, import it, or will need to recreate it. A visual page recreation alone may leave important business functions or records behind.
- Pages, blog posts, images, and other media
- Products, collections, orders, payment methods, shipping rules, and tax settings
- Bookings, member accounts, forms, and customer or contact records
- Third-party integrations, app configurations, and custom code or Velo features
- Digital product files, email campaigns, and any business records you need to retain
Account for Wix Store limitations
Wix says a store cannot currently be transferred by itself from one Wix site to another. Its documented alternatives are to export and import the product list, duplicate a site, or transfer the entire site and store to another Wix account. A duplicated site includes products and categories but not payment methods, shipping rules, or tax settings. Digital product files also need separate attention: Wix says they do not transfer with a whole-site account transfer. Wix documents the standalone-store limitation and workarounds. Feature availability can change, so verify the current status before planning around it.
Build and test before changing the domain
- Create the new site on the destination platform and recreate the design, navigation, and features your visitors rely on.
- Move or re-enter content and records with the destination’s available import tools. Check products, customer data, bookings, forms, and integrations individually.
- Test key journeys on the destination site, including purchases or bookings if applicable, forms, member access, and links between pages.
- Only after the new site is ready, point or connect the domain to the destination platform using that platform’s instructions.
Protect URLs and search visibility during a platform move
Before rebuilding, make a list of current page URLs and choose the matching destination page for each one. Keep the same domain when feasible and preserve existing page paths where they still make sense. When a path changes, create a relevant 301 redirect from the old URL to the closest equivalent new page. Wix describes redirects as a way to send visitors from old links to new pages and help maintain search-ranking data; redirects cannot guarantee unchanged rankings. Wix’s redirect guidance explains its workflow and prerequisites.

Wix’s documented redirect workflow requires an upgraded Wix site and a connected domain, and Wix says free Wix URLs cannot be redirected to a premium site. Those conditions matter if you are trying to redirect Wix URLs as part of a move; they are not a substitute for setting up redirects on the destination platform when page paths change.

Review more than redirects at launch. On the destination, check page titles and descriptions, internal links, canonical settings, page structure, and technical behavior. After the domain switch, test old and new URLs, fix broken links, and watch for indexing issues.
Quick Recap

- Used Book in Good Condition
Use this sequence to avoid missing data or breaking links
- Choose the destination. Decide whether the site is changing owners but staying on Wix, or leaving Wix for another platform.
- Make a safe working copy if useful. A duplicate can help with preparation, but inventory and separately preserve business data and app settings it may omit.
- Record content and functions. List pages, blog posts, products, orders, customer records, bookings, members, forms, media, integrations, and Velo secrets.
- For a Wix transfer, review ownership details. Check eligible plan, domain, and app choices; payment responsibility; collaborator access; and any free-URL prefix change before confirming.
- For an external rebuild, migrate each data type deliberately. Use the destination’s import tools where supported and recreate anything that cannot be imported.
- Map old URLs to new pages. Preserve paths where appropriate and set relevant redirects for changed paths.
- Test before launch and after the switch. Verify the site’s key user flows, check for broken links, and monitor indexing after the domain points to the new site.
