Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your Android phone supports USB-C audio and your USB-C headphones already work for you, there is no reason to use its 3.5 mm headphone jack. The jack is still handy for plugging in conventional wired headphones directly, but it is an option—not an obligation. Because the phone model is unspecified, check its manufacturer’s specifications before assuming USB-C audio is supported.
USB-C audio and a headphone jack take different paths
A 3.5 mm headphone connection sends analog audio to conventional wired headphones. USB-C audio carries digital audio; a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) must turn that signal into analog sound before conventional headphone drivers can reproduce it. The DAC may be built into USB-C headphones or into an adapter, depending on the setup. Android’s USB digital audio documentation describes USB audio, while its USB-C-to-analog adapter specification sets out how an adapter can connect 3.5 mm accessories.

When USB-C audio is the more convenient choice
- Your headphones already use USB-C: connect them to the phone’s USB-C port, provided the handset supports USB audio.
- You prefer one connection: USB-C headphones avoid keeping a separate 3.5 mm headset in your rotation.
- You do not need the port for another task while listening: USB-C audio uses the USB-C connection, whereas the headphone jack lets you listen without using that port as the headphone connection.
Those are practical preferences, not proof that USB-C sounds better. The Android documentation describes the signal paths and compatibility requirements; it does not establish one connection as a universal sound-quality winner.

What the 3.5 mm jack still does well
The jack provides a direct way to connect conventional 3.5 mm headphones without a USB-C adapter. That can be useful if you already own wired headphones, want to avoid occupying the USB-C port with audio, or need to connect a 3.5 mm accessory quickly. Keeping the jack available does not require you to use it.

How to reuse 3.5 mm headphones over USB-C
- Check the phone’s manufacturer specifications or support page. Confirm that the exact handset supports USB audio. A USB-C connector by itself does not establish audio support.
- Choose a USB-C-to-3.5 mm headphone adapter with a DAC. It must convert digital audio to analog. Android’s adapter guidance says analog-only adapters are not supported.
- Check the adapter and headset combination. Do not assume every adapter works with every Android phone. Microphone and button behavior can depend on the particular phone, adapter and headset.
Android’s USB headset accessory specification covers stereo output and recommends a microphone as an optional feature. That specification does not guarantee that every 3.5 mm headset’s microphone or controls will work through every adapter.
Do Android’s adapter examples guarantee compatibility?
No. Android’s USB audio CTS Verifier guidance includes adapter testing recommendations and example products, but Android says it does not take responsibility for or endorse the listed products. The page also warns about products falsely claiming to be made by Google. Treat it as testing guidance, not a universal compatibility list or buying endorsement.

Which connection should you use?
If USB-C headphones work with your phone and fit your routine, use them. Keep the 3.5 mm jack as a convenient fallback for direct connection of wired headphones; if you want to use those headphones through USB-C instead, verify phone support and use an adapter with a DAC. Neither connection is inherently the better-sounding choice based on the cited Android specifications.
