You can make phone photos smaller without an obvious loss at the size they’ll be viewed, but lossy compression cannot guarantee that no image data is discarded. For new photos, use HEIF/HEIC when your devices and apps support it. For an existing photo, export a compressed copy and keep the original. If you need more free space on the phone rather than a smaller file, use a backup or offloading workflow instead.
Choose the right kind of “smaller”
These three goals call for different methods:
- Smaller file to share or upload: export a copy in a more efficient format or compress it.
- Smaller files in future captures: change the camera format, or reduce capture resolution if you can give up some cropping room.
- More free space on the phone: back up photos and manage local copies. A cloud backup setting does not necessarily change the local original.
Use HEIF or HEIC for future photos when it’s compatible
Image format affects file size even when pixel dimensions are unchanged. Apple says HEIF offers better compression than JPEG while preserving the same visual quality; Android Open Source Project documentation describes HEIC as offering better quality at smaller file sizes than JPEG. These are general format comparisons, not a guarantee that every HEIF/HEIC image will be smaller than every JPEG. iPhone: switch the capture format
- Open Settings > Camera > Formats.
- Choose High Efficiency to capture in HEIF on supported devices.
- Choose Most Compatible if JPEG compatibility with older devices, apps, or upload forms matters more.
Apple’s 2019 WWDC storage presentation used “50 percent smaller” to illustrate HEIC files compared with JPEG at comparable quality. Treat that as an illustrative comparison, not a promised saving for every photo or current device configuration. Apple Developer’s WWDC19 presentation describes the comparison.

Android: check your phone’s camera documentation
Android devices may support HEIC, but camera settings and availability vary by manufacturer and model. The Android Open Source Project documentation describes HEIF support and camera streams; it does not establish one universal consumer-facing setting path. Reduce capture resolution only if you can give up crop latitude
Fewer megapixels mean fewer pixels to crop into later. On supported iPhone models, Apple documents a choice between 12 MP and 24 MP for the Main or Fusion camera. To check for it, go to Settings > Camera > Formats > Photo Mode and select 12 MP if available. This reduces resolution; it is not a way to retain all the detail of a 24 MP capture. Compress an existing photo by exporting a copy
- Keep the original, especially if you may want to edit or crop it later.
- Export a copy as HEIF/HEIC if the recipient, app, or upload form accepts it. Use JPEG when broader compatibility matters more than minimizing size.
- If your photo app offers a compression or quality control, use a conservative setting rather than assuming a particular slider value is universally safe.
- Check the exported file’s dimensions and size, then inspect it at ordinary viewing size and at the crop or print size you actually need.
Lossy compression can remove image information even when the result looks unchanged at normal viewing size. Whether a difference is visible depends on the image, viewing size, crop, and print size. Repeatedly saving a lossy file can degrade it further, so work from the original when making another export. There is no single quality percentage that guarantees an acceptable result for every phone photo and use.

Free phone storage without confusing backup with compression
Google Photos offers Original quality and Storage saver backup settings. Google says Storage saver compresses photos and resizes photos larger than 16 MP to 16 MP; some files are ineligible for compression. That 16 MP rule describes Google Photos’ backed-up media, not a universal camera setting, and it does not mean the local original on your phone has been resized. Check the backup details in the app to see how a particular item was handled, and confirm a backup is complete before removing local copies. Google Photos: choose backup quality
Don’t use ProRAW when small files are the priority
Apple ProRAW is designed to retain more image information for editing, and Apple says that results in larger files. For the supported models and conditions described in Apple’s documentation, approximate file sizes are 25 MB at 12 MP and 75 MB at 48 MP; Apple also says ProRAW files can be 10–12 times larger than HEIF or JPEG.
