Before opening an account, ask the bank—in writing—whether your exact crypto-related activity, account type, and named counterparties are allowed. “Crypto-friendly” is not a regulated promise that an account will be approved, that every transfer will go through, or that service will continue. This guide uses U.S. rules; readers elsewhere should check their country’s deposit-insurance scheme, banking regulator, and financial-crime requirements.
Start by defining how you will use the account
A bank can treat different crypto-related activities differently. State what you plan to do and whether the account is personal or business. For example, you might deposit to or withdraw from an exchange, receive fiat proceeds after a crypto sale, pay a crypto business, operate an exchange or money-transmission service, or use a bank’s crypto-custody service. These uses are not interchangeable.

Describe the expected counterparties, transfer direction and frequency, approximate amounts, relevant jurisdictions, and whether the funds are personal or business funds. A clear description gives the bank a basis to assess the proposed activity; it does not guarantee acceptance.

Confirm the bank’s current policy and payment support
Ask about the specific account you want, not just whether the institution is generally “crypto-friendly.” Name the exchange or other counterparty, and check the payment methods you expect to use.

Get the answer and applicable terms in writing, and keep a copy of the current account agreement and fee schedule. The Federal Reserve, FDIC, and OCC said in their 2023 joint statement that banking organizations are neither prohibited nor discouraged from serving a customer class when permitted by law or regulation. That is not a requirement for any individual bank to accept every customer or transaction. In March 2025, the FDIC clarified that FDIC-supervised institutions may engage in permissible crypto-related activities without prior FDIC approval, provided they manage risks and follow applicable law. That guidance addresses banks’ own activities; it does not promise that a customer’s transfers will be accepted. FDIC, March 28, 2025; Federal Reserve, FDIC and OCC, January 3, 2023.
Check what is actually covered by deposit insurance
Identify the insured bank that holds the money and the legal name of the account holder. Ask whether the balance is a deposit at that bank or a product issued by a non-bank intermediary, and what conditions apply if an app or crypto company sits between you and the bank.
FDIC insurance protects eligible deposits at an insured bank if that bank fails. It does not insure crypto assets or assets issued by non-bank crypto companies. An app’s “FDIC insured” wording is not, by itself, proof that a crypto balance or token is insured. Distinguish an eligible bank deposit from an exchange balance, wallet, token, or other non-bank product, and verify the legal structure rather than relying on a slogan. FDIC, “What’s Not Insured?” (July 28, 2022).

Compare the account’s operating terms
Use each bank’s current disclosures; there is no universal crypto-account fee or transfer limit established by the regulatory sources cited here. Compare the same items for each account so a convenient payment feature does not obscure a costly or restrictive term.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Account eligibility | Whether the account is available for your personal or business use and supports the stated activity. |
| Fees and balances | Monthly charges, transaction fees, minimum balances, and any cash-management features in the current fee schedule. |
| Transfers | ACH and wire availability, transfer cutoffs, settlement timing, daily or per-transaction limits, and any crypto-related restrictions. |
| Account controls | Holds, debit-card rules, overdraft treatment, review procedures, and account restriction or termination language. |
| Service | Support hours and channels, especially if you need help with a time-sensitive transfer. |
Terms can differ by institution and account type. Do not assume a limit, fee, review process, or closure notice period applies across banks; confirm it in the live agreement and disclosures for the account you plan to open.
Prepare for business due diligence if you operate a crypto-related company
Not every crypto company has the same status under money-services-business rules. Whether a business falls within those requirements depends on what it does and which rules apply; do not assume either that every crypto business is an MSB or that none is.

FinCEN’s guidance describes information banks may consider when assessing an MSB relationship, including business identity, registration when required, state or local licensing where applicable, agent status where relevant, account purpose, and anticipated activity. A business should be ready to explain its services, customers, markets, locations, expected transaction amounts and flows, and compliance controls. Depending on the risk assessment, the bank may seek additional information, such as details of an anti-money-laundering program. This guidance concerns MSB relationships and should not be applied as a blanket checklist for every individual consumer. FinCEN, “Guidance on Customer Identification and Due Diligence Requirements for Banks” (April 26, 2005).
Evaluate crypto custody as a separate service
If a bank offers to safekeep crypto-assets for you, do not treat that service as an ordinary checking or savings account. Ask which assets and functions are covered, who controls the keys, what records and reconciliations are maintained, what happens during an outage or insolvency, and which legal agreement governs the assets.
The federal banking agencies’ July 2025 statement discusses risk management for bank crypto safekeeping and says banks conducting it must do so safely and soundly and comply with applicable law; the statement does not create new supervisory expectations. It does not turn a crypto asset into an insured bank deposit. Read the custody agreement and verify the legal arrangement independently of any deposit account you may also hold. Federal Reserve, FDIC and OCC, July 14, 2025.

Use a side-by-side comparison before deciding
For two or more banks, compare the same details and retain the source documents for each answer. A short written record can help distinguish an explicit policy from a general marketing claim.
- Policy scope: Which activities are permitted, prohibited, or subject to review, and for which account types?
- Counterparties and payment rails: Are your named exchanges or businesses supported, and through which methods—ACH, wires, or cards?
- Account economics: What are the current fees, minimums, limits, and cash-management terms?
- Controls and continuity: What documentation can be requested, how are reviews handled, and what do the written restrictions or termination terms say?
- Protection and legal structure: Which insured bank holds the deposit, whose name is on it, and are any balances or services instead provided by a non-bank?
- Business compliance fit: If relevant, do your registration or licensing status, markets, customers, expected volumes, and compliance records fit the bank’s requirements?
No single “crypto-friendly” label answers these questions. The useful comparison is between specific account terms and your actual activity, backed by the bank’s current written response.
