In Kubernetes, startup, liveness, and readiness probes answer different operational questions, and the right one depends on what you need to know.
The agent scenario in this headline is an illustrative framing, not a documented incident or a general finding about AI agents. Kubernetes documentation explains how to check a running system; it does not evaluate agent memory or behavior.

Why remembering the environment is not a health check
A stored note such as “this task is for staging” can help an agent choose the right environment. It cannot establish whether the current deployment is responding, functioning correctly, or able to accept traffic. That requires a current check against the running system, with a result that is meaningful for the question being asked.

A staging status report should therefore distinguish what was checked from what remains unknown.

What startup, liveness, and readiness probes tell you

Kubernetes puts the distinction plainly: “Readiness probes determine when a container is ready to accept traffic.” A failed readiness check is not, by itself, an instruction to restart the container; it changes whether the Pod is treated as ready to serve traffic.
Choose a check that matches the question
Kubernetes supports four probe mechanisms: exec, grpc, httpGet, and tcpSocket. The mechanism matters less than whether the test detects the condition you care about. For example, a TCP connection test can show that a port accepts connections, but it does not by itself prove that the application can handle a useful request or is ready for traffic.

- Use a startup probe when initialization may take time and should complete before liveness or readiness evaluation begins.
- Use a liveness probe for a failure where restarting the container is an appropriate recovery action.
- Use a readiness probe for a condition that means the container should temporarily stop receiving traffic while it continues running.
Be especially careful with liveness checks. Kubernetes warns that an incorrect probe can trigger restarts during high load, which can cause failed client requests and add load to the Pods that remain. The probe should identify a condition that a restart can plausibly fix, not merely report that the system is busy or experiencing a temporary dependency problem.
Check Kubernetes API health endpoints correctly
For the Kubernetes API server, the current health endpoints are /livez for liveness and /readyz for readiness. The older /healthz endpoint is deprecated. Automated checks should use HTTP status codes; verbose endpoint detail is intended for human debugging, not as the machine’s decision rule.

A practical staging status report
Imagine an agent remembers that a deployment is in staging. That remembered context can identify the target, but a useful health report needs a fresh observation. It should say which system and check were queried, when the result was obtained, what the result was, and what that check does—and does not—establish.
- Confirm the target is the intended staging deployment rather than relying only on an old note.
- Run or retrieve the relevant current probe or health check.
- Report the check’s scope and result—for example, whether it tested startup, liveness, readiness, or only whether a port accepted a connection.
- Include when the result was observed. If no current check was run or its result is unavailable, say that health has not been verified.
This separates remembered environment context from observed system state without claiming that any one probe proves an entire deployment is healthy.
