How to Auto-Copy a Claude Code Resume Command When a Session Ends

Configure a Claude Code SessionEnd hook to create a resume command for the ending session and pass it to a clipboard utility that works in your environment.

Use a Claude Code SessionEnd hook to read the ending session’s ID, build a claude --resume command and pass it to a local clipboard utility. This matches session termination more closely than the Stop hook, which runs when the agent finishes responding. The clipboard step depends on your operating system and environment; Claude Code does not provide one universally portable clipboard command.

Choose the hook that matches the event

Claude Code distinguishes between an agent finishing a response and a session ending. A Stop hook runs when the main agent has finished responding, so it may run while you still intend to keep working in that session. A SessionEnd hook runs when the session ends, including on exit, /clear, or an interactive /resume switch. See the Claude Code hooks reference for the current event and configuration details.

Hook When it runs Fit for copying a resume command on session end
Stop When the main agent finishes responding, according to the hooks reference. Poor fit: a response can finish without the session ending.
SessionEnd When the session ends, including exit, /clear, or an interactive /resume switch, according to the hooks reference. Use this for session-lifecycle cleanup such as preparing a resume command.

Configure a short SessionEnd hook

Claude Code passes hook input as JSON. For SessionEnd, that input includes session_id, along with fields such as transcript_path, cwd, hook_event_name and reason. Your script can extract session_id and use it to form a command for that specific conversation.

  1. Open the Claude Code hooks reference and follow its current configuration syntax to register a SessionEnd hook that invokes your local script.
  2. Have the script read the hook’s JSON input and obtain the session_id value. Treat it as data: quote or safely pass it as an argument rather than concatenating untrusted input into a shell command.
  3. Construct the resume command using the explicit session ID, then send the resulting text to a clipboard utility available in the environment where Claude Code is running.
  4. Test the workflow on your actual operating system and terminal setup, including any remote or headless context in which you expect to use it.

SessionEnd hooks cannot block termination, and the documented default timeout is 1.5 seconds. Keep the script fast and the clipboard operation best effort; a slow or unavailable clipboard command should not hold up session shutdown. The hook’s timing and input behavior are documented in the hooks reference.

Build the right resume command

For a particular session, use the documented explicit form claude --resume <session-id> (or its short form, claude -r <session-id>). The CLI reference also documents claude -c to continue the most recent conversation in the current directory, and claude -r "<session>" "query" to resume by session ID or name with a query. See the Claude Code CLI reference.

Form What it targets When it makes sense
claude --resume <session-id> or claude -r <session-id> An explicit session ID or name. Best match when the hook has the ending session’s ID and you want to resume that conversation.
claude -c The most recent conversation in the current directory. Convenient when you want the latest conversation there, rather than an exact session selected by ID.
claude -r "<session>" "query" A session ID or name, plus a query. Use when resuming with an initial query; keep shell quoting appropriate to your shell.

When inserting the ID into a command string for the clipboard, ensure the ID is quoted safely for the shell in which you will paste it. Avoid assuming that shell quoting rules are identical across shells.

Choose a clipboard method for your environment

The hooks documentation does not prescribe a clipboard utility. Use a local clipboard command that is installed and usable from the same environment as Claude Code. The right choice depends on the operating system, shell, display session and whether Claude Code is local, over SSH, or headless. Do not assume that a command available in your desktop terminal will also work in a remote or background process.

  • Confirm the clipboard utility exists where the hook script runs, and that it can access the clipboard you intend to use.
  • Send the command text as data through the utility’s input mechanism; avoid shell interpolation that can change the session ID or command.
  • Keep the operation within the short hook timeout and handle a missing utility without delaying session termination.

OSC 52 terminal escape sequences are not a workaround: Claude Code rejects OSC 52 clipboard writes in hook output. Use a separate local clipboard utility instead. See the hooks reference.

What to check if nothing is copied

  • The hook did not run: Confirm that the hook is registered for SessionEnd, not only Stop, and check the hook configuration against the current documentation.
  • The command targets the wrong conversation: Confirm the script extracts the session_id from the hook input and uses the explicit resume form rather than relying on the current directory’s latest conversation.
  • The clipboard is empty: Run the chosen clipboard utility from the same shell and execution context. Desktop, SSH and headless environments can expose different clipboard capabilities.
  • Termination is not delayed: That is expected. SessionEnd hooks cannot block session termination; keep clipboard work brief and best effort.
