Murmure is a free, open-source dictation app that lets you speak into a keyboard shortcut and insert the transcription into the Mac app you are using. Its developer says audio is transcribed on-device and deleted afterward. That is the project’s stated design, not an independently audited privacy guarantee.
What Murmure does on a Mac
Murmure is speech-to-text software, not a microphone or other physical product. Start dictation with a shortcut, speak, and the app inserts the resulting text into the active application. The developer describes it as system-wide dictation and offers configurable shortcuts, formatting rules, a custom dictionary, voice mode and an overlay. Murmure’s documentation also lists Windows and Linux builds, although the setup steps below are for macOS. Murmure’s product page and documentation describe the features.

The project identifies NVIDIA Parakeet TDT 0.6B v3 as its transcription model and says it supports 25 languages: Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Russian and Ukrainian. How to install and grant macOS permissions
The macOS guide provides separate DMG downloads for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Follow the guide’s download instructions for the build that matches your Mac, then open the downloaded installer and complete installation. Murmure requires three macOS privacy permissions to work as intended: Microphone to capture speech, Accessibility to simulate keyboard input or paste text, and Input Monitoring to detect shortcuts.

- Open Murmure’s macOS installation guide and download the Apple Silicon or Intel DMG for your Mac.
- Launch Murmure and approve the requested Microphone, Accessibility and Input Monitoring access in macOS privacy settings. If you need to change them later, look under System Settings > Privacy & Security and open the relevant permission category.
- Restart Murmure after granting the permissions, as the guide directs.
- Change the default shortcut before relying on it: the guide says Ctrl+Space conflicts with the macOS input-source switcher. It recommends Ctrl+Option+M, a function key or a mouse button instead.
The guide cautions that shortcuts involving Space or number keys can cause those characters to appear in the active app. If a shortcut triggers the wrong macOS feature or inserts a character, choose a different binding in Murmure’s settings.
Does dictation work across Mac apps?
The intended workflow is to dictate into the currently active app: Murmure detects its shortcut, captures speech, then inserts the transcription as text. That makes it suitable in principle for fields such as documents, email and chat, wherever the active app accepts keyboard input. Because Accessibility access is used to simulate typing or paste text, the app needs that permission for insertion. The official materials describe this system-wide behavior; they do not establish compatibility with every individual Mac app or text field.

Does Murmure send recordings to the cloud?
The vendor says transcription runs locally, works offline and does not upload audio. Its product page states, “Audio is transcribed on your machine, never uploaded.” It also says audio is deleted after transcription, the last five transcripts remain in RAM until the app quits, transcripts are not written to logs, and the app has no telemetry, tracking or account requirement. These are Murmure’s claims about the product, not findings from a code review, network inspection or security audit. Details may change between releases, so consult the current product and privacy information for the version you install.

Murmure recommends at least 2GB of available RAM and 1GB of disk space, and says a GPU is not needed. Its product page does not specify a required Mac model or an external microphone. You therefore do not need to buy a separate microphone based on the published requirements; macOS must simply be able to provide Murmure with microphone input. The developer’s requirements are recommendations, not independent compatibility testing.

Cost, license and performance claims
Murmure is presented as free, open-source software, and its documentation identifies the license as GNU AGPL v3. The project says it has no business model and links voluntary support through Tipeee and GitHub Sponsors. On its homepage in 2026, Murmure also displayed claims of 30,000+ downloads, dictation “3x faster than typing,” and support for 25 EU languages. The download and speed figures are the vendor’s published claims, not independently verified measurements. The product page says Parakeet was chosen for accuracy and efficiency on lower-end hardware, but no independent Murmure-specific accuracy benchmark is established.
