What does a search engine do?
A search engine accepts a query and returns relevant information from online material it has indexed. Yandex describes the traditional purpose of search as finding information on the internet, while noting that modern search services can also connect people with recommendations and real-world information.

In its 2022 annual report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Yandex says its algorithms draw on linguistics, mathematics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to extract, organize, and present relevant information. That is the company’s description of its own system, not an independent assessment of how its rankings work.
What makes a search engine “Russian”?
The word “Russian” describes a service’s connection to Russia—such as its market, origin, or intended audience. It does not identify a separate technical category: a Russian search engine still performs the familiar task of helping users find information in response to queries.

The label can also be ambiguous. A reader might mean a service used in Russia, one developed or operated by a Russian company, or one that serves Russian-language users. Those descriptions are related but not interchangeable; the phrase alone does not establish every one of them.
Which search engines are associated with Russia?
Yandex Search
Yandex calls Yandex Search the leading search engine in Russia and says it provides rapid access to online information. The company also frames contemporary search as extending beyond links to suggestions about reading, places, music, and travel.
Google Search and Mail.ru Search
Yandex Metrica documentation lists Google and Mail.ru alongside Yandex among the search engines it recognizes as sources of referral traffic. This confirms their relevance as services that can send visitors to websites; it does not establish their current market rankings.
What does Yandex’s Russian search-share figure mean?
Yandex’s Russian-language company page reports that Yandex had 68.01% of Russian search share in Q3 2025, attributing the figure to Yandex Radar. It is a dated, publisher-reported measure—not a universal count of every search made in Russia.

Yandex Radar says its market-share calculations use the percentage of tagged-site sessions attributed to each search engine, based on aggregated Yandex Metrica data. Its technology reports cover Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Turkey. The figure therefore reflects that measurement approach, and should not be treated as an independently verified comparison across all search activity.

For a straightforward definition, “Russian search engine” usually points to a search service connected with Russia or its Russian-language market, with Yandex Search as the central example. If you mean a specific attribute—such as where a company is based, which users a service targets, or its measured share—name that attribute rather than assuming the label answers all three.
