Start by testing Mumbai, but do not assume it will outperform Singapore. A server closer to an India-based encoder is a sensible first choice; the route from your VPS to YouTube’s ingest endpoint, however, depends on the provider, network, and configuration. Test both locations with equivalent instances and your actual stream, then choose using sustained delivery, YouTube stream health, egress limits, transfer costs, and operational resilience—not the region name alone.
What the VPS location changes—and what it does not
Your VPS sends a live feed to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. YouTube then processes the incoming stream and distributes it to viewers, including transcoding live input for different devices and network conditions. A Mumbai VPS therefore does not by itself guarantee better playback for every viewer, and a Singapore VPS does not mean viewers must connect to Singapore. YouTube’s live encoder guidance describes the ingest-and-distribution workflow.

For a stream originating in India, Mumbai is a reasonable first region to test because placing ingest near the source is a general network-design principle. AWS recommends ingesting live content in the Region closest to the stream source, but that guidance does not compare Mumbai and Singapore routes to YouTube for your ISP or VPS provider. AWS’s live-streaming architecture overview supports the principle, not a Mumbai-versus-Singapore performance result.
Both locations are listed for Google Cloud’s Live Stream API: Mumbai (asia-south1) and Singapore (asia-southeast1). Google identifies latency, cost, resilience, and co-location with other Google Cloud services as region-selection considerations. An API location listing does not establish that every Compute Engine machine type or VPS product is available on identical terms in both regions. How to compare Mumbai and Singapore fairly
No benchmark establishes a universal winner for this route. Compare the same provider and equivalent instance sizes where possible, and run the intended encoder workload from each region. Keep the video, bitrate, protocol, and test duration consistent so the result reflects the network and server choice rather than a changed configuration.
- Confirm availability and plan limits. Verify that the VPS provider currently offers the required instance in the specific Mumbai and Singapore regions or zones. Record the machine type, network tier, outbound bandwidth limit, and any transfer allowance or charge.
- Use the same stream source and settings. Send the same representative content from each instance to the same YouTube channel and ingest configuration. Include the actual audio and movement your continuous stream will contain.
- Test sustained delivery, not just a speed-test peak. Check for interruptions and packet loss during a representative run. A brief speed test does not prove that an instance can sustain a continuous upload at the target bitrate.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Record warnings or interruptions for each run and note when they occur. YouTube advises testing before an event and monitoring stream health.
- Compare operational resilience. Consider how quickly you can restart the encoder, recover after a dropped connection, and restore the stream if the instance or region has an issue. Neither region selection nor the cited cloud documentation guarantees uninterrupted end-to-end streaming.
- Estimate recurring cost. Calculate outbound transfer for the stream’s actual run time and billing configuration, alongside the instance charge. Do not assume YouTube-bound egress is free.
Choose the location that sustains the stream reliably in your own test and fits the operational and cost requirements. If both perform similarly, capacity, predictable transfer charges, regional resilience, and ease of recovery are more useful tie-breakers than geographic proximity alone.

Set the encoder for a stable YouTube ingest
Use the bitrate row that matches the stream’s resolution, frame rate, and codec. The following H.264 examples are YouTube’s published minimum and recommended encoder settings; they are guidance, not measurements of a particular VPS’s capability. See YouTube’s encoder settings for the applicable settings and other formats.

- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Network headroom: do not size the VPS at exactly the video bitrate. The server must sustain outbound delivery with room for network variation and other stream traffic.
- Test content: test with representative audio and motion, then check YouTube stream health before relying on the setup continuously.
These video settings do not establish the VPS’s available egress. Google Compute Engine bandwidth limits vary by instance, network tier, and traffic routing. Confirm the selected machine’s outbound ceiling rather than assuming that any low-cost instance with a public IP can sustain the stream. Google’s network pricing information also covers data transfer to YouTube, so calculate charges using the actual billing setup and current rates. Use RTMPS and monitor the actual stream
RTMPS is a secure extension to RTMP and is YouTube’s recommended default for this ordinary continuous-stream use case, provided your encoder supports it and it is available in your current YouTube settings. YouTube’s developer documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL and specifies port 443. You need a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and stream key; treat the key as a password and do not expose it in screenshots, logs, or public configuration. YouTube RTMPS developer guide
After starting the encoder, confirm that YouTube is receiving the stream and inspect its health messages rather than relying only on a “connected” status in the VPS or encoding software. Test before depending on the stream, and repeat the test if you change the instance, region, bitrate, or route.

Continuous-stream checklist
- Test Mumbai first as a hypothesis, then compare it with Singapore using equivalent instances and the same stream workload.
- Confirm the provider’s current regional availability, instance egress ceiling, network tier, and transfer pricing.
- Configure the correct YouTube ingest endpoint and a protected stream key; prefer RTMPS on port 443.
- Match bitrate to the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec; use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, no more than four seconds.
- Run a representative test and monitor YouTube stream health for interruptions or warnings.
- Plan how to restart or recover the encoder, and do not treat either region as an uptime guarantee.
