If Puppeteer fails with net::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID, the error occurs while Chrome is navigating to an HTTPS page—not while taking the screenshot. For a controlled test against a known certificate problem, set acceptInsecureCerts: true in the browser’s launch or connection options. To make the connection trustworthy rather than bypassing its warning, fix the server’s certificate chain or configure the appropriate private certificate authority as trusted in the browser environment.
Allow Puppeteer to navigate despite the certificate error
In current Puppeteer, acceptInsecureCerts defaults to false. Set it to true when launching a browser to let navigation proceed despite HTTPS certificate errors. Puppeteer documents the option as applying to HTTPS errors during navigation; it is not a screenshot option. See the ConnectOptions API and LaunchOptions API.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
acceptInsecureCerts: true,
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://your-test-host.example', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Replace https://your-test-host.example with the HTTPS address you are testing. The sequence matters: Puppeteer first navigates with page.goto(), then captures the loaded page with page.screenshot(), as shown in its screenshots guide.
When Puppeteer connects to an existing browser
If your script attaches to a browser that another process started, put the same option in puppeteer.connect(), rather than changing page.screenshot():

Use the endpoint supplied by your browser setup. Puppeteer’s LaunchOptions API extends its connection options, so the setting is available in either configuration path.
Choose between a test-only bypass and fixing certificate trust
ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID indicates that Chrome does not accept the certificate authority for the presented certificate. The error alone does not identify why a particular deployment is untrusted. Check the certificate chain the site presents, whether its issuing CA is intended to be trusted, and the trust configuration in the environment running Chrome.

| Approach | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
acceptInsecureCerts: true |
An automated test must continue against a known test certificate problem. | Navigation proceeds despite HTTPS errors, so that run does not validate the certificate in the ordinary way. |
| Correct the certificate chain or trust configuration | The browser should establish a trusted HTTPS connection, including to an internal site using a private CA. | You must fix the server’s served chain or configure the appropriate CA as trusted in the environment that runs Chrome. |
The bypass does not repair the certificate or establish that the server’s identity is safe. Keep it limited to tests where the certificate issue is known and intentional. Chrome’s Root Program Policy describes certificate authority trust; a Chromium issue discussion notes that a self-signed certificate’s issuing CA can be installed as a local trust root on devices that access the site. The exact trust-store procedure depends on the platform and deployment; that discussion is not a general installation guide.

Use the option name that matches your Puppeteer version
Use acceptInsecureCerts in current Puppeteer. The Puppeteer changelog records that the previous name, ignoreHttpsErrors, was renamed in Puppeteer 23.0.0, released 2024-08-07. Older snippets may show that former spelling; check the API documentation for the version installed in your project.

At the time of the documentation check on 2026-10-03, the official documentation surfaced Puppeteer 25.12.0, whose system requirements specify Node 22.12 or later. These version details can change. If you supply a separate Chrome binary using a custom executable path, consult Puppeteer’s Puppeteer-to-Chrome for Testing version mapping; Puppeteer says it is only guaranteed to work with its bundled browser when a custom executable path is used.
Troubleshoot the screenshot workflow
- The certificate error still appears: Confirm the option is spelled
acceptInsecureCertsand is set on the browser launch or connection that handles the navigation. The current API’s default isfalse. If you use a separately managed browser, make sure your script is connecting with the intended options. - You set an option on
page.screenshot(): Move it topuppeteer.launch()orpuppeteer.connect(). The failure happens during HTTPS navigation, before screenshot capture. - The page loads only when the bypass is enabled: Treat that as evidence that the test is proceeding without ordinary certificate validation, not as a certificate repair. Inspect the site’s served chain and the browser environment’s trust configuration.
- An older example uses
ignoreHttpsErrors: That is the former name. Puppeteer records the rename toacceptInsecureCertsin version 23.0.0; verify the correct spelling for your installed release. - A custom Chrome executable behaves differently: Check the Puppeteer and Chrome for Testing version mapping and the installed release’s requirements. Puppeteer only guarantees its bundled browser when a custom executable path is used.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; its capture process accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets, with each step configurable. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
