Mumbai colocation vs public cloud: which is right for your workload?

Choose Mumbai colocation when your servers will run at high, predictable utilisation, you need exact control of hardware or physical data location, and you can fund and operate equipment for several years. Choose public cloud when demand is uncertain, you need capacity in minutes, or managed databases, analytics and other services are more valuable than owning the underlying machines. A hybrid design is often the practical middle ground: keep the steady, specialised core in a Mumbai facility and use private cloud links for bursts, managed services, backup or disaster recovery.

The right answer is not a rack rate versus an hourly instance price. It is a three-year decision covering utilisation, people, connectivity, compliance evidence, recovery objectives and the cost of changing course.

What you are choosing

Mumbai colocation

Colocation means you buy or lease the servers, storage, accelerators and network equipment, then install them in a third-party data centre. The facility supplies space, power, cooling, physical security and usually carrier access. Your team remains responsible for selecting hardware, installing operating systems, patching firmware, replacing failed parts, securing the stack and planning capacity.

This model gives you control over the exact CPU generation, GPU, memory layout, disks, RAID controller, network cards, hypervisor and licensing model. That control is valuable for appliances, low-latency systems, specialised GPUs, software tied to a physical host, or workloads whose utilisation stays high enough to keep owned equipment busy.

Public cloud

Public cloud provides virtual machines, containers and managed services through APIs and consoles. You can add capacity without buying a server, automate environments, and place workloads in more than one region. The provider operates the buildings and underlying hardware; you still configure identity, networks, operating systems where applicable, applications, data protection and access policies.

Cloud turns much of infrastructure into operating expense, but the bill varies with compute hours, storage, snapshots, database capacity, requests, inter-region traffic, internet egress and support. A design that is inexpensive while lightly used can become difficult to forecast when it runs continuously.

Decision matrix

Decision axis Mumbai colocation Public cloud Measure before deciding
Demand shape Best fit for steady, high utilisation Best fit for bursts and uncertain growth 12–36-month utilisation profile
Hardware control Exact CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and network choices Provider instance and service catalogue Specialised hardware, firmware and licence needs
Scaling speed Procurement, delivery and rack-power lead time Minutes through APIs for supported services Maximum acceptable time to add capacity
Cost horizon Hardware capital cost plus space, power and connectivity contracts Usage-based operating cost, including storage, transfer and managed services Three-year total cost, staff and migration
Operations You own patching, spares, security and lifecycle Provider runs facilities; you operate configuration and workloads Internal SRE and hardware skills
Residency and audit Physical location and controls can be specified directly Region, service scope and shared-responsibility evidence must be verified Regulation, audit artefacts and contract clauses
Connectivity Cross-connects, carriers, Internet Exchanges and cloud on-ramps vary by facility Native regional networking plus optional private links Latency, egress, redundancy and port charges

Match the platform to the workload

Steady transactional or internal systems

ERP, core databases, private virtualisation clusters and other systems that run at a stable load can use owned hardware efficiently. Model CPU, memory, IOPS and network utilisation over at least a year, including seasonal peaks. If the forecast keeps the equipment busy and the application does not need rapid regional expansion, colocation may produce a lower long-run infrastructure cost.

Bursty consumer and digital workloads

Campaigns, ticket releases, exam results, media launches and unpredictable customer traffic benefit from API-based scaling. Cloud lets you add instances, queues and managed databases when demand rises and remove them afterwards. The trade-off is that autoscaling, logs, snapshots and outbound traffic must be governed or the variable bill can outrun the original estimate.

GPU, appliance and licensing constraints

Some machine-learning, video, scientific or virtualisation workloads need a particular GPU, PCIe topology, firmware version or licence bound to a host. Confirm that a cloud service exposes the required device and performance characteristics; otherwise a colocated server can provide a more deterministic platform. Account for spare accelerators, support contracts and the time required to replace a failed card.

Latency-sensitive systems

Measure the complete path, not just a provider’s advertised region latency: user access network, carrier hand-off, firewall inspection, database calls and storage writes all contribute. A Mumbai facility near your users or carriers may reduce hops. Cloud can also meet tight targets when the selected region or a Local Zone is close enough, but verify the exact service availability rather than assuming every service exists at the edge.

What Mumbai offers for cloud-connected designs

AWS announced the Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region on 27 June 2016 to serve Indian users with local infrastructure, lower latency and compliance options. AWS later expanded Mumbai to a third Availability Zone in 2019 and also operates a Hyderabad Region. AWS describes Local Zones as extensions of a Region that place compute, storage, databases and other services closer to end users and business centres when a standard Region is not close enough for latency or residency needs.

AWS documents a Mumbai Direct Connect location at Equinix MB2. Dedicated connections are available at 1, 10 and 100 Gbps; MACsec is optional on the 10 and 100 Gbps options. AWS defines Direct Connect as “a private, physical network connection between AWS and your data center, office, or colocation environment.” A private circuit does not remove the need for redundant routers, diverse paths and correctly designed BGP and firewall policies.

Facility claims differ and change. Iron Mountain’s current Mumbai information reports more than 93 MW of combined power capacity, over 200 Internet service providers and four Internet Exchanges across its Mumbai campuses. Equinix states that Mumbai MB1 hosts direct-connect nodes for AWS, Google Cloud and Oracle Cloud and supports colocation with cloud and network interconnection. These are provider-reported figures: request a current proposal, verify available power and ports, and inspect the meet-me room before signing.

Cost: compare a three-year total, not a headline rate

RawCompute gives an indicative Tier III India range of INR 5,000–15,000 per rack unit per month and INR 2–6 lakh per month for a standard 42U rack including power. These are vendor estimates, not a universal Mumbai tariff. A quote can differ because of usable kilowatts, density limits, cooling, cabinet or cage size, minimum commits, remote-hands rates, cross-connects, taxes and contract term.

For a four-server example, RawCompute models cloud compute plus managed database, storage and networking at approximately INR 35–50 lakh per year. Its colocation example assigns roughly INR 8–10 lakh per year to amortised hardware, INR 10–15 lakh to half-rack colocation and INR 3–5 lakh to bandwidth. Treat those figures as an illustrative model: support, staffing, backup, licences, migration, utilisation, egress and taxes can materially change the result.

Cost item Include for colocation Include for cloud
Compute Servers, GPUs, storage controllers and spares; amortise over the realistic replacement cycle Instance or container hours, commitments, autoscaling overhead and idle resources
Facility and power Cabinet or cage, committed kW, cooling, cross-connects, remote hands and installation Usually embedded in service prices, but model premium managed services and dedicated hosts
Network Transit, Internet Exchange access, carrier circuits, cloud ports and cross-connect fees Inter-zone, inter-region and internet egress, NAT gateways, load balancers and private-link ports
People Procurement, rack visits, hardware operations, firmware and incident response Cloud architecture, FinOps, security configuration and service-specific operations
Resilience Spare parts, second site, replication, backup storage and tested recovery Multi-zone or multi-region copies, backup retention, replication and recovery testing
Exit and change De-racking, shipping, asset disposal and contract notice periods Data transfer out, application refactoring and replacement of provider-specific services

Use the same service levels in both models. A cloud estimate that omits backup retention and egress is not comparable with a colocation quote that includes them. Conversely, a colocation estimate that excludes on-call engineering, failed-drive replacements and a disaster-recovery site understates its cost.

Compliance and Indian data residency

Location alone does not make a workload compliant. With colocation, specify the facility address, access controls, visitor records, CCTV retention, media destruction, incident notification, subcontractors, audit rights and responsibilities for your equipment. Obtain evidence that controls operate in practice and map each requirement to an owner and an artefact.

With public cloud, verify the region and service scope for every component, not just the virtual-machine region. Managed databases, logging, support, backups and security services can have separate processing locations or retention behaviour. Provider certifications are useful evidence, but they do not transfer your configuration, identity, encryption, retention or access-review duties to the provider.

Ask legal and compliance teams to approve the architecture and contract. Record where production, replicas, backups and support data reside; define encryption-key control; and retain an exportable audit trail. Recheck the provider’s current documentation and the facility’s current attestations immediately before contracting because availability and terms change.

When hybrid is the better answer

Hybrid works when a stable core belongs on owned equipment but cloud services add speed or resilience. A common pattern is database and specialised processing in a Mumbai rack, with cloud-based front ends, analytics, object storage, queues or disaster-recovery capacity. Keep interfaces explicit so that a cloud outage or a failed private link does not leave the colocated system in an undefined state.

Private connectivity

Use Direct Connect, Google Cloud Interconnect or an equivalent private service where predictable paths, security policy or sustained traffic justify the port and cross-connect cost. Build two routers and diverse facility or carrier paths when the connection is production-critical. Test failover; a single virtual circuit is not redundancy.

Burst and recovery

Package workloads so cloud capacity can be created from tested images or infrastructure definitions. Replicate only the data that recovery objectives require, encrypt it in transit and at rest, and measure restore time rather than assuming replication equals recoverability. Define which system is authoritative during a split-brain event.

Practical selection workflow

  1. Classify each workload. Record utilisation stability, latency target, data sensitivity, hardware specificity, burst profile, recovery-point objective and recovery-time objective.
  2. Build the three-year TCO. Include servers, GPUs, spares, rack power, cross-connects, bandwidth, backup, licences, staffing, migration and exit costs. Use measured utilisation and state every commitment or one-time allowance.
  3. Request comparable Mumbai quotes. Send at least two facilities the same brief: usable kW, cooling, cabinet or cage, remote hands, carriers, Internet Exchange access, cloud on-ramps, SLA, security controls, installation fees and renewal terms.
  4. Price equivalent cloud architectures. Model AWS, Azure and Google Cloud with storage, managed databases, inter-region transfer, internet egress, support and any reserved-instance or savings-plan assumptions. Include idle and peak scenarios.
  5. Test the hybrid path. Measure application latency, throughput, packet loss, failover time and operational workload over a representative period. Validate that private connectivity and DNS, identity and monitoring work in both locations.
  6. Document the decision. Record assumptions, owners, exit triggers and a review date. Recheck region availability, facility capacity, pricing and compliance evidence immediately before signature.

Questions to put in a colocation contract

  • What power is committed, metered and usable at the cabinet, and what happens when demand exceeds it?
  • Which carriers, Internet Exchanges and cloud on-ramps are physically available, and what are installation and monthly cross-connect charges?
  • What do the uptime, temperature, humidity, maintenance and incident-notification SLAs actually cover?
  • What are remote-hands response times, hourly rates, escalation paths and after-hours rules?
  • How are visitor access, two-person controls, camera footage, disk destruction and customer-owned keys handled?
  • What are the minimum term, notice period, renewal increase, removal window and charges for de-racking equipment?

Operational pitfalls and fixes

Under-sizing power

Nameplate wattage is not a capacity plan. Measure real draw, add startup and thermal headroom, and confirm whether high-density GPU cabinets require a different cooling design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming one connection is enough

A single carrier, cross-connect or cloud port can fail independently of the facility. Design and test diverse paths, separate edge devices and a documented degraded mode.

Ignoring hardware lifecycle

Set dates for firmware, warranty, drive and battery replacement, and keep compatible spares on site or under a documented service agreement. Procurement lead time belongs in the recovery plan.

Allowing cloud sprawl

Apply budgets, tagging, quotas, lifecycle policies and alerts before production launch. Review egress and managed-service usage monthly; deleting a virtual machine does not necessarily delete snapshots, disks or reserved commitments.

Treating backup as an afterthought

Keep a separate backup failure domain, encrypt it, test restores on a schedule and record the measured recovery time. A second copy in the same cabinet or availability zone is not a complete disaster-recovery strategy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you decide to own hardware

A 1U rack server is a sensible starting point for a compact colocation deployment when a workload and TCO assessment already justify ownership. Select it for the required CPU, memory channels, storage endurance, network speed and remote-management features—not simply because 1U saves space. Confirm the facility’s depth, rail, power connector, airflow and density rules before purchase, and budget for redundant power supplies, disks, support and a replacement plan.

  • Supports Heavy Loads: With a weight capacity of 110 lbs, this shelf is designed to support heavier equipment. It ensures your devices stay securely in place while providing stability and durability over time, even under heavy loads.

Do not buy a rack server first and search for a workload later. If utilisation, growth, staffing or recovery requirements are still uncertain, a public-cloud pilot can provide measurements for a later hardware decision without committing capital.

Decision summary

  • Pick Mumbai colocation for predictable, sustained utilisation; specialised or tightly controlled hardware; and a team prepared to own lifecycle, security and spares.
  • Pick public cloud for volatile demand, rapid launches, multi-region expansion and managed services, provided you control variable consumption and verify data handling.
  • Pick hybrid when a stable owned core and cloud elasticity, managed services or recovery capacity solve different parts of the same workload.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is colocation automatically cheaper than AWS in Mumbai?

No. A lower monthly infrastructure estimate is possible for continuously busy equipment, but the result depends on utilisation, hardware depreciation, staffing, bandwidth, support, backup, taxes and migration. Compare equivalent three-year totals rather than a rack quote with compute alone.

Can a colocated rack connect privately to AWS or Google Cloud?

Yes, where the chosen facility and carrier ecosystem provide the required on-ramp. AWS documents Mumbai Direct Connect, and facilities such as Equinix advertise cloud interconnection. Confirm port speeds, cross-connects, lead times, recurring charges and redundant-path options in the specific site proposal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who is responsible when a colocated server fails?

The customer normally owns diagnosis, spare parts and replacement unless a managed-hardware service is contracted. The facility may provide remote hands, but its response scope and charges must be written into the SLA.

Does keeping data in an Indian cloud region satisfy residency rules?

Not by itself. Check every service, replica, backup, support channel and log destination, then document encryption, access, retention and audit controls with your compliance team.
