That is a personal result, not a magic distance: a small move can change whether the bar is blocked or how its sound reflects off the TV stand, shelf, or nearby surfaces. If dialogue sounds muffled, test placement from your usual seat before changing audio settings.
Why does my soundbar sound muffled?
A soundbar can be physically obstructed by the TV stand, cabinet, decor, or other objects. Even when nothing is directly in front of it, sound reflecting from a nearby surface may interfere with sound reaching you directly. Roku describes this interaction as comb filtering, which can make audio less crisp, particularly higher-frequency sounds such as dialogue, in its official setup guidance.

Moving a bar forward or sideways may change those reflections or clear an obstruction. That is a plausible reason a six-inch shift helped in one room, but it does not establish six inches as a generally effective distance. The result depends on the room, furniture, soundbar design, and listening position.
Where should I place my soundbar?
Start with the position recommended for your particular model; manufacturers’ placement advice is not a universal measurement for every soundbar.

- Keep its sound path clear. Roku advises clearing objects from in front of the soundbar and avoiding an enclosure. For a bar on a shelf or TV stand, its guidance recommends positioning the front edge flush with the furniture edge.
- Keep it in front of the TV. Bose’s Smart Ultra placement guidance recommends a position below and in front of the TV, close to the shelf edge, with the top speakers unobstructed. It advises against an enclosed cabinet and diagonal corner placement. These instructions are specific to that product.
- Check the exact model before mounting. Sony says to consult the instructions for the specific soundbar for the safe mounting procedure, tools, dimensions, and optimal position. Its placement guidance notes wall placement as an option; confirm compatibility and installation requirements before choosing it.
Can moving my soundbar improve dialogue?
It can, if the move changes an obstruction or the way sound reflects toward your listening seat. To find out whether placement is the issue in your room, compare positions rather than assuming that the reported six-inch move will work for you.
- From your normal listening seat, note whether the bar is set back from the shelf edge, whether anything blocks its front or top speakers, and whether it sits centered below and in front of the TV.
- Choose one placement change—for example, bring the bar’s front edge flush with the furniture edge if the model’s guidance supports that position. Do not change several things at once.
- Replay the same familiar dialogue or scene at the same volume and listen from the same seat. Compare clarity, not just loudness.
- If you still hear a problem, try another single placement change, then compare again. This is a practical informal check, not a standardized test.
What if the soundbar has a separate subwoofer?
Treat the subwoofer’s bass as a separate placement variable. TCL’s placement advice says its location affects bass and recommends trying different locations before adjusting available settings. Keep the subwoofer position unchanged while you compare soundbar positions, then test subwoofer locations separately if the bass remains unsatisfactory.
