MSI mode does not make a GPU render faster. It changes how a PCIe device signals the processor that it needs attention. There is no established, general Windows gaming benefit from forcing a graphics card into MSI mode, so a stable PC is best left to its supported driver and Windows device configuration.
What MSI mode means
Here, MSI means message-signaled interrupts, not the name of a computer manufacturer. An interrupt is a notification from a device that it needs the processor to handle something. With an MSI, the device sends that notification by writing a value to a particular memory address instead of asserting a dedicated physical interrupt pin. Microsoft explains the mechanism in its Windows driver documentation.

MSI-X is a more programmable extension. Microsoft documents support for up to 16 messages with multi-message MSI and up to 2,048 with MSI-X. Those are capability limits, not speed or gaming-performance measurements. If a device supports both, Windows automatically uses MSI-X.

Not in the sense of increasing shader throughput, clock speed, or memory bandwidth. MSI changes interrupt delivery; it does not add rendering resources to the GPU. It could matter if interrupt handling were a genuine bottleneck, but the available evidence does not establish a reliable, general improvement in Windows game FPS, frame-time consistency, or input latency from manually forcing a GPU into MSI mode.

A secondary analysis describes roughly threefold lower interrupt latency in a constrained Intel benchmark using MSI rather than IO-APIC delivery. That test used a PCIe exerciser and a custom Linux kernel module—not a Windows gaming PC or consumer graphics card—and did not measure game FPS, frame times, or end-to-end input latency. It cannot support a promise of “free FPS” or smoother games on Windows.
It is also not established that every current NVIDIA or AMD GPU uses MSI or MSI-X by default. That depends on the device, driver, and system configuration; the available sources do not provide a current model-by-model default list.
What the Windows registry setting controls
Microsoft documents MSISupported as a REG_DWORD under a device’s hardware key at Interrupt ManagementMessageSignaledInterruptProperties. A value of 1 enables MSI support. The documentation describes this as device-driver configuration—typically enabled by the driver’s INF during installation—not as a general Windows gaming switch. It also describes the related MessageNumberLimit setting.

Because this is device- and driver-specific configuration, changing it is not a supported universal GPU tuning step. Windows Plug and Play and the device’s supported driver should normally manage interrupt resources.

For a stable gaming PC
Leave the setting alone if the system is working normally. There is no demonstrated general gaming uplift that justifies changing device interrupt configuration for its own sake.
For a specific, reproducible problem
If a game stutters or input feels delayed, first identify the affected device, driver, game, and conditions. Look for a manufacturer-documented workaround for that exact device-and-driver combination; do not assume the GPU’s interrupt mode is the cause. A change recommended for one device may not apply to another.

Why blanket changes are risky
A secondary analysis describes a Windows StorAHCI compatibility case in which enabling MSI for certain storage devices led to incomplete I/O and controller resets; disabling MSI resolved that case. This does not show that changing GPU MSI causes the same storage failure, but it illustrates why device-specific settings should not be changed indiscriminately.

A third-party PowerShell utility’s README says it backs up prior registry state, calls for a reboot after changes, and offers a rollback path; its author also acknowledges that a device can rarely fail to start. That is the utility author’s guidance, not Microsoft’s endorsement or evidence that a separate utility is needed.
