Self-Hosting an AI Model: What It Does—and Doesn’t—Keep Private

Local inference can keep prompts and responses on the machine running a model, but the wider application determines what else is collected, transmitted or retained.

Self-hosting can keep prompts and responses from being sent to a model provider when inference runs locally, but it does not automatically keep all data private. The user interface, logs, retrieval database, backups, network connections and administrator access also shape where information travels and how long it persists.

What self-hosting changes about your data

With local inference, the model processes prompts and generates responses on the machine running it. That can remove the model provider as a destination for prompt and response content—but only for requests that actually stay local.

Ollama’s privacy policy, last updated March 2026, states: “We do not collect, store, transmit, or have access to your prompts, responses, model interactions, or other content you process locally.” This is a statement about Ollama’s handling of locally processed content, not a guarantee about every local-model runtime or about the rest of an installation. Ollama also says its software may collect limited device and usage metadata, including app version and request counts. So “local” does not mean that no information of any kind is collected.

When a request leaves the machine

If an application sends a prompt to a cloud-hosted model, the request crosses a different data boundary. Ollama says cloud-hosted prompts and responses are processed to provide that service. Check the current policy and available controls for the particular provider and feature; a local model installation does not make a separate cloud request local. Ollama privacy policy

Hosted services may retain data for operational or safety purposes, but practices vary. OpenAI’s API documentation says abuse-monitoring logs may contain customer content, including prompts and responses, and are retained for up to 30 days by default unless a legal obligation requires longer retention. This is an OpenAI-specific policy statement; the reviewed page does not state a publication year, and the figure should not be applied to other providers or local models. OpenAI API data controls

OpenAI also lists application state and abuse-monitoring logs among data types that may be stored. Separately, its security and privacy page says business products do not train on organization data by default and describes encryption at rest and in transit. Those are statements about OpenAI’s business products, not evidence about the configuration or security of a self-hosted deployment. OpenAI business privacy and security

Local inference versus a hosted API

Neither architecture is automatically the safer choice. Local inference can reduce exposure to a model provider, while a hosted API may offer documented controls and operational safeguards. The relevant question is what happens to data along the full path, and which protections are implemented, contractually promised or independently verifiable.

Privacy question Local inference Hosted API
Who may access prompt and response content? The model can process content on the machine running it. Access by the application, system operators and other components depends on the deployment. The request is sent to the provider; access and handling depend on that provider’s policy and controls.
What may be retained? Logs, retrieval data, backups and other local application data depend on the system’s configuration. Retention depends on the provider. OpenAI documents abuse-monitoring logs that may contain customer content and are kept up to 30 days by default, subject to a legal-retention exception.
Who controls logs and backups? The operator can set controls for system-managed data, but must account for every component that stores it. The provider’s documented controls and applicable terms govern provider-held data; the customer still controls any copies retained in its own systems.
What must be checked? Network exposure, telemetry, cloud features, administrator access, storage permissions and retention settings. Provider policy, available data controls, retention terms and any additional services receiving the request.

Audit the whole application, not just the model

A prompt can pass through more than the inference server. Trace the full path for both user input and generated output, including copies created for troubleshooting, analytics or recovery.

  • Client and front end: Check whether the interface stores conversations in browser storage, sends analytics, or reports errors to an external service.
  • Middleware and inference server: Review request handling, prompt traces, access logs, crash dumps and any telemetry. Verify settings for the exact runtime version in use.
  • Retrieval and auxiliary services: Identify where documents, embeddings and retrieved passages are stored. Check whether embedding, reranking or other workflow steps call a hosted service.
  • Network and accounts: Review which systems the application can contact, whether the model endpoint is exposed beyond its intended audience, and who has administrative access.
  • Backups and deletion: Set retention rules for logs and backups, decide how deletion requests apply to retained copies, and protect local storage with appropriate permissions and encryption.

These are deployment checks, not claims that any particular product enables or disables a feature by default. A local model can avoid sending inference content to a provider while the surrounding application still stores it or transmits it elsewhere.

What privacy assurances can—and cannot—establish

A provider policy describes the provider’s stated handling of data; it does not independently verify a specific installation. Likewise, a setting or architecture diagram is not proof that every route, log and backup behaves as intended. For an organization, distinguish implementation controls from contractual commitments and independent evidence, then assess each against the data and risks involved.
