You can move a Hostinger website to a different domain without recreating every page. The safe sequence is to choose between keeping both domains live and making a complete move, add the destination domain to the correct hosting plan, back up the files and database, copy the site into the new domain’s public_html, update domain references, test everything, and only then change DNS.
For a WordPress site where both domains are hosted in the same Hostinger account, the Copy Website tool may automate much of the work. A manual file-and-database migration is required for many other CMSs, for cross-account moves, and whenever the automated option is unavailable.

Choose what “move” means before touching the site
Changing a domain can mean two different things. The correct method depends on whether the old address must continue serving the same content.
| Goal | Hostinger approach | Old domain after the change | Main work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Show the same site at two addresses | Park the new domain on the existing site | Remains active and continues to serve the site | Domain setup and DNS; no separate content copy is normally needed |
| Make the new domain the site’s permanent address | Add the new domain as a website and transfer the content | Can redirect, remain as a fallback, or be retired after testing | Files, database, configuration, URL replacement, cache clearing and DNS |
When parking is the better choice
If both domains are in the same hosting account and visitors should see identical content at either address, Hostinger identifies domain parking as the appropriate option. Parking avoids maintaining two independent copies, but it does not by itself create a clean canonical-domain change for search engines or application settings. Use it when the old address genuinely needs to keep working.

When a complete migration is required
Use a complete move when the new domain should become the primary address, when the old domain should eventually stop serving the site, or when the destination is in another Hostinger account. A complete move creates a destination website, transfers the files and database, changes the site’s own URL settings, and changes DNS after verification.
Plan the migration and a rollback
Do not start by changing nameservers. Keep the original site available while the destination is assembled and tested. Your rollback is the untouched original site plus downloadable backups.
Prepare these items
- Access to the Hostinger account and the hosting plan that will serve the new domain.
- The destination domain added to that plan, or a new website created with that domain in the destination account.
- A complete website-file backup, preferably downloaded as a compressed archive.
- A database backup if the site uses one; Hostinger’s cross-account example uses a compressed
.sql.gzexport. - The database name, username and password currently used by the site, plus the destination database credentials if a new database will be created.
- Administrative access to the CMS and to any services tied to the old domain, such as forms, payment gateways, analytics, email, webhooks or API integrations.
Keep the original working
Leave the old files, database and DNS configuration unchanged until the new domain passes testing. Keep the downloaded backups until you have confirmed that the destination is stable and that you can restore or revisit the old installation if a problem appears.
Add the destination domain to Hostinger first
The new domain must exist in the relevant Hostinger hosting plan before content can be placed there. In hPanel, add the domain to the plan that will host it. For a cross-account migration, create the new website in the destination Hostinger account and specify the destination domain during setup.
Check the destination’s document root after it is created. Your copied site files must end up in that domain’s public_html, not in the original domain’s folder and not one level too deep inside an extracted archive.

Requirements for Copy Website
Hostinger says the destination domain or subdomain must already be hosted in the same account, and the user must have the required plan access. If either condition is missing, use the manual method or correct the hosting setup first.
Manual migration: copy the website files
- Create a file backup on the original site. Generate and download the website files from the original domain. A compressed archive such as
.tar.gzis suitable for moving a large set of files. - Upload the archive to the destination. In Hostinger File Manager, open the new domain’s
public_htmland upload the backup. A cPanel-based workflow can also use an FTP client such as FileZilla. - Extract the archive. Uncompress the backup inside the destination document root.
- Check the folder level. The actual site files—such as the CMS front controller, application directories and configuration file—must be directly available in the destination
public_html. If extraction createdpublic_html/backup-folder/site-files, move the contents ofsite-filesup one level. - Preserve required hidden files. Files used for redirects or server behavior, including an existing
.htaccesswhere applicable, must be included in the backup and retained.
Do not delete the original files simply because the archive has uploaded. The original installation is your fastest fallback while the new domain is being checked.
Move or reconnect the database
Static sites may have no database. WordPress, Joomla, OpenCart and many other CMSs normally do, so the files alone are not a complete copy.
Same-account database handling
If the copy process preserves the existing database connection, inspect the destination configuration and confirm that it still points to the intended database. Do not assume that a successful file copy means the database connection is correct.
Cross-account or new-database handling
- Create a destination database when the new account or site does not already provide the required database.
- Import the backup through phpMyAdmin. Hostinger’s migration guidance uses a compressed SQL backup; decompress it if the import interface requires an uncompressed SQL file.
- Record the destination credentials: database name, database user and database password.
- Update the site configuration. For WordPress, edit
wp-config.phpso its database name, user and password match the destination database. Other CMSs store equivalent values in their own configuration files. - Load the site before changing DNS. If the application reports a database connection error, recheck the database host, name, user privileges and password rather than changing DNS.
Importing a database does not automatically change the domain stored in its rows. URL replacement is a separate step.

Replace the old domain in configuration and database content
Applications commonly retain the old domain in both configuration files and database values. Update both locations or the site may load a mixed version: an apparently correct homepage with broken images, old internal links, redirect loops or an admin area that still points to the original address.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Configuration files
Search the copied CMS configuration for the old domain and replace it with the new one where the application expects a site URL or base URL. Hostinger specifically gives OpenCart and Joomla as examples in which the domain can appear in configuration files. WordPress may also define URL values in wp-config.php or rely on values stored in its database.
Database URL values
Update URL values throughout the imported database. In WordPress, this includes the site address and content references; serialized data, page-builder settings, widget data and plugin settings can also contain the old address. Use a migration method that understands serialized values rather than performing an unsafe plain-text replacement that changes string lengths without updating serialization metadata.
For other CMSs, use the application’s documented URL-change procedure where available, then inspect the database for remaining absolute links. Replace only values that belong to the site; do not alter unrelated text, credentials or third-party URLs.
WordPress shortcut: use Copy Website when it fits
For a WordPress site with both origin and destination hosted in the same Hostinger account, open Hostinger’s Copy Website workflow if it is available to your plan. The destination domain or subdomain must already be hosted in that account.

- Add and host the destination domain first.
- Open the WordPress management area in hPanel and select the copy option for the source installation.
- Choose the already-hosted destination domain or subdomain.
- Start the copy and wait for Hostinger to report completion.
- Open the destination installation and verify its URL, database connection, permalinks, media, login and plugins.
- Clear the relevant caches before judging whether the new domain is displaying the updated copy.
Copy Website reduces manual transfer work; it does not remove the need to test the resulting site or to plan redirects and DNS. It is also not the documented route for Hostinger Website Builder sites.
Hostinger Website Builder and other CMS limitations
Hostinger states that its documented cross-account migration process does not apply to websites created with Hostinger Website Builder. Do not treat a Website Builder project like a conventional PHP-and-database installation. Use the transfer or domain-change capability provided for that product, and confirm the supported path with Hostinger if the project must move between accounts.
For Joomla, OpenCart and other CMSs, the general pattern remains file backup, database export, destination import, configuration updates and URL replacement, but the exact configuration files, cache locations and URL tables are CMS-specific.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Clear caches and test before DNS changes
Hostinger recommends clearing cache after the move so the updated version is displayed. Clear any applicable browser cache, CMS or plugin cache, server-side Hostinger cache and content-delivery cache before diagnosing a stale page.

Test the destination comprehensively
- Homepage: it loads over the intended new domain and does not redirect back to the old one.
- Internal links: representative pages, categories, search results and pagination use the new address.
- Images and downloads: media files return successfully and do not reference the old host.
- Forms: submissions arrive, confirmation messages work and spam protection or webhooks still function.
- Logins: normal users and administrators can sign in, sign out and reset passwords.
- CMS admin: the dashboard loads without a redirect loop or mixed-domain warning.
- HTTPS: the certificate covers the new domain and browsers show a secure connection.
- Redirects: existing rules do not force every request to the old domain or create repeated redirects.
- Integrations: analytics, payment services, email delivery, APIs, webhooks and social previews accept the new domain.
- Performance and error paths: a missing page, a protected page and a representative dynamic request return the expected result.
Test using a clean browser session as well as your normal browser. A cached redirect or logged-in session can hide a configuration error.

Change DNS last
Keep DNS unchanged until the destination content and configuration have passed testing. Hostinger explicitly advises not changing the domain’s DNS settings until the transfer is complete.
- Confirm that the destination files, database, configuration and cache state are correct.
- Confirm that HTTPS is ready for the destination domain.
- Point the domain’s DNS records or nameservers to the correct Hostinger destination.
- Monitor both the new and old paths while DNS updates are taking effect.
- Retest the homepage, internal links, forms and admin area after the domain begins resolving to the destination.
DNS propagation can produce temporary errors during a cross-account or domain migration. Hostinger notes that a temporary HTTP 403 may appear during this phase. A brief 403 during propagation does not by itself prove that the files or database are wrong; verify the document root, permissions, DNS target and Hostinger site assignment before making destructive changes.
After the new domain is live
Decide what the old domain should do
If the old domain remains part of your public presence, keep it configured intentionally—either as the parked address serving the same content or as a controlled redirect to the new canonical URL. If it is being retired, retain the registration and hosting access long enough to handle redirects, bookmarked links and service dependencies.

- Change the website URL in analytics and search-management properties.
- Update payment, email, CRM, marketing, webhook and API allow-lists.
- Replace old-domain links in documentation, profiles, email signatures and campaign material.
- Renew or reissue certificates and validate any domain-based email separately from the website.
Keep the rollback materials
Do not discard the original backup immediately after the first successful page load. Keep the files and database export until the destination has survived normal logins, publishing, form submissions and integration traffic.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Hostinger shows the old site or a blank directory | Files are in the wrong document root or nested inside the archive folder | Confirm the destination domain’s public_html contains the actual site files. |
| Database connection error | Destination credentials or privileges do not match the configuration | Compare database name, user, password and host in the CMS configuration with the destination database. |
| Homepage works but links, images or admin redirect to the old domain | Old URL values remain in configuration or database content | Update the CMS URL settings and database references, then clear caches. |
| Changes are not visible | Browser, CMS, Hostinger or CDN cache is serving the previous version | Clear each applicable cache and retest in a clean browser session. |
| Temporary 403 after DNS is changed | DNS propagation or a destination assignment/document-root issue | Allow for propagation while checking the DNS target, domain assignment, document root and permissions. |
| WordPress copy option is unavailable | Destination is not hosted in the same account or the plan lacks required access | Host the destination first, confirm plan access, or perform a manual migration. |
| Website Builder project cannot be copied like WordPress | The documented cross-account process does not support Hostinger Website Builder | Use the product-specific transfer or domain-change process instead of file/database instructions. |
Recommended sequence at a glance
- Decide whether you need parking or a complete migration.
- Back up the original files and database and download both backups.
- Add the destination domain to the correct Hostinger plan.
- For same-account WordPress, use Copy Website if your plan and setup qualify.
- Otherwise upload and extract the files into the destination
public_html. - Create or connect the destination database and update CMS credentials.
- Replace old-domain values in configuration files and the database.
- Clear browser, site and Hostinger caches.
- Test pages, media, forms, logins, HTTPS, redirects and integrations.
- Change DNS only after those tests pass, then monitor for propagation-related errors.
