Move Supabase Users to Self-Hosted Open Source Cloud Without Resetting Passwords

Supabase user password hashes can survive migration, but hosted-to-self-hosted moves require users to sign in again. Here’s how to restore Auth data and verify the move.

Yes—Supabase users’ passwords can remain usable when you move their Auth data. Supabase documents that migrating the Auth schema carries users and their hashed passwords, so users do not need to reset or recreate passwords. But this does not necessarily keep them logged in: existing sessions depend on JWT secrets, and Supabase says users must re-authenticate when moving from its hosted platform to self-hosted Supabase.

What carries over—and what does not

For a move between Supabase projects, Supabase says the Auth schema, including users and hashed passwords, can be migrated. Its guide, Migrating Auth Users Between Supabase Projects, explains that users do not need to reset or recreate passwords when that data is carried over.

For a move from the Supabase platform to self-hosted Supabase, the platform restoration guide says the database dump includes auth.users and related data. This preserves account records and password credentials; it does not guarantee that current login sessions survive. Treat password continuity and session continuity as separate migration outcomes.

Migration scenario Password credentials Existing sessions
Supabase project to another Supabase project Auth tables and password hashes can be migrated, according to Supabase’s project-to-project guide. Can remain valid if the destination reuses the original JWT secret; changing it invalidates existing tokens.
Supabase platform to self-hosted Supabase The database dump includes auth.users and related data. Users need to authenticate again; Supabase says the platform and self-hosted JWT secrets differ.

For project-to-project moves, changing the JWT secret also regenerates the destination anon and service_role API keys, so dependent applications and services may need updated credentials. Supabase notes there is no universal script for migrating only the Auth schema; use its general migration guidance for the relevant project setup.

Restore a platform project to self-hosted Supabase

The documented route uses the Supabase CLI to create separate role, schema, and data dumps, then restores those files with psql. The CLI’s dump operation uses Docker. Have a working self-hosted destination and the database connection details ready, and do a test restore before relying on the new instance.

  1. Export the database roles:

    supabase db dump --db-url "[CONNECTION_STRING]" -f roles.sql --role-only
  2. Export the schema:

    supabase db dump --db-url "[CONNECTION_STRING]" -f schema.sql
  3. Export data separately:

    supabase db dump --db-url "[CONNECTION_STRING]" -f data.sql --use-copy --data-only
  4. Restore the generated SQL files to the self-hosted database with psql, following Supabase’s current restore instructions for the complete commands and required settings. The guide sets session_replication_role to replica for data import to disable triggers and avoid problems such as double encryption.

Use the Supabase CLI dump rather than substituting an unfiltered raw pg_dump command. Supabase applies platform-specific filtering; a raw dump can include internal schemas and cause permission errors during restore.

Prepare the services outside the database

A successful database restore is not the whole migration. Supabase identifies these items as needing separate configuration or transfer:

  • JWT secrets and API keys: Configure the self-hosted environment’s credentials. For this platform-to-self-hosted path, plan for users to sign in again.
  • OAuth and redirects: Reconfigure providers and update redirect URLs to match the destination.
  • Email: Set up SMTP and email settings for the destination.
  • Domain and DNS: Configure any custom domain and point DNS at the new deployment.
  • Edge Functions: Copy and deploy functions separately.
  • Storage: Transfer storage objects separately; restoring the database does not move the files themselves.

Test compatibility before switching over

Managed and self-hosted installations may run different Postgres, Auth, or Storage versions. Supabase warns that a dump can refer to settings, tables, or columns unavailable in the destination version; extensions may also need to be enabled. Its guide gives version-specific examples, including Postgres 17 settings and newer Auth or Storage schema elements, so check the current source and destination versions rather than assuming those examples apply to every installation.

Account types need different treatment

Supabase Auth supports password and passwordless email or phone sign-in, OAuth, and SAML SSO. OAuth providers and redirect URLs need destination-specific configuration. Anonymous users are a special case: Supabase says they are not tied to an identity that lets them sign back in after signing out. See the Supabase Users guide for account and identity details.

Do not confuse restoring Supabase’s own database with importing users from another authentication provider. Supabase’s Auth0 migration guide describes a separate staged import workflow that supports bcrypt and Argon2 hashes through an admin create-user process. That is not the documented procedure for restoring a Supabase project’s auth.users table.
